England / UK and Colonial Port Numbers - Seaman Records
« on: Sunday 30 December 18 07:37 GMT (UK)  »
Wondering if someone has an interest and/or knowledge in relation to the UK and Colonial Port Numbers as registered on a Seaman's record.

Background - Have ggg-grandfather, James Kearney from Liverpool, who was a registered seaman and I have located his Register Ticket (copy attached).

Against the record are what seems to be Port numbers on where he has travelled (copy attached).

I have read through the information on the National Archives website in relation to BT113 but having difficulty in trying to interpret what they are saying and what I have on the records.  I have located a listing of numbers also from the National Archives, but just don't know if I am looking in the right place.

Any guidance would be appreciated.  It is a field I haven't explored before.

Regards,
Suzanne

Australia / BMD Certificates - What to Believe
« on: Thursday 24 November 16 23:22 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters,

Have a dilemma as to what to believe on BMD Certificates.  Here is my problem.

Thomas Lochland - Marriage certificate states:
Married on: 6 November 1858, Portland Victoria, Australia (can agree with that).
Birth Place: Swellendam, Cape of Good Hope, South Africa (hmm)
Occupation:  Fellmonger
Age:  37 (born circa 1821)
Parents:  Consaed Lochland (Farmer) and Jean Groenwald

Thomas Lochland - Death certificate states as given from his son (informant):
Died on:  11 April 1893, Melbourne, Victoria (age 72) (born circa 1821)
Birth Place: Yorkshire, England (in Victoria for 38 years)
Parents:  Joseph Lochland (Woolen Merchant) and Jean (maiden name unknown)

I have the correct certificates for Thomas Lochland.

So, after research in South Africa and Yorkshire (via the internet) I have been unable to determine the correct names of his parents and where he was actually born.  Also, I have been unable to locate any passenger record for Thomas Lochland arriving in Australia.  Of course the obvious is the variations in spelling.  The first sighting I have of him is in 1854 in Portland, Australia as a Freemason.

Could he have been on passage from Yorkshire, via South Africa, then on to Australia?

Have not been able to locate any siblings either to confirm the correct parents names?

What do you believe and where to from here.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Regards,
Suzanne

Clare / Placename Query - Baptism - Drumclift, County Clare
« on: Friday 21 August 15 11:22 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Wondering if there is someone who can help me with two extracts from the Drumclift, Diocese of Killaloe, Baptism Register.  A copy of these entries I have obtained from the  NLI parish registers online.  I have reviewed maps, etc, but just can't seem to locate the place of residence.  The handwriting doesn't help in deciphering the entry.  Both entries attached as jpg files.

First Entry:
Date:  14 March 1864
Infant:  Patrick
Residence:  Cannot decipher
Parents:  Pat Mungovan and Susan Connors
Sponsors:  Michael Daffey and Honora Moran

Second Entry:
Date:  13 January 1867
Infant:  Thomas
Residence:  Cannot decipher
Parents:  Pat Muggavin and Susan Connors
Sponsors:  John Coffee and Honora Moran

I have attached a copy of the full pages.  The first entry appears as the last entry on the left hand side page.  The second entry appears as the third entry on the second page.

Hope I have explained this correctly.  Sometimes you just need a new set of eyes on this.

Down / Extract from Census Return of 1851 - Interpretation
« on: Friday 01 August 14 06:09 BST (UK)  »
Much to my excitement I found for the first time an 1851 Census Return Extract which I can quite understand.  I have attached a copy for reference.

This is my family, but I don't understand the information about the Applicant.  It reads James Hayes (1857-8).  Now this James Hayes was born on 7 May 1855.  His parents are correct on the Census Return.  There wasn't another James Hayes born between 1857-1858 to this family.

How come he appears on the 1851 Census Return?

The address c/o Mr John Cameron, 9 Cairo Street, Belfast.  Do I take it that James Hayes was living there at the time according to the census.

Any explanation about interpreting the census return would be appreciated. ???

Hi Rootschatters,

Just wondering if someone could help decipher a word in a marriage entry in the 1752 Marriage Register of Felsted, Essex.

I have attached a copy.  Half way down the page there is an entry as follows:

30 Dec 1846 - Samuel Gentry and Mary Dolbin ???????? by Banns

Can anyone tell me what that word is after "Dolbin" and before "By"?  Is it another Name?

Thanks to all.

Essex / Canewdon - Boxes Farm
« on: Saturday 11 May 13 09:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I am trying to locate any information about a farm known as "Boxes Farm" in Canewdon.  My timeline is 1850's to 1880's and was held in the name of Wright.

I have obtained information via census records, but wanted to see if anyone would know anything about the actual farm, where it is located in Canewdon, or where to suggest I go to find out some more information.

Regards to all,
Suzanne

London and Middlesex / 1861 Middlesex Census - Help - Quelch
« on: Saturday 19 January 13 05:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I have trawled through everything available to me (ancestry, FindMyPast, familysearch, etc) and I just cannot find this family unit in the 1861 Middlesex Census.  Of course, I keep in mind that "were they there on the night of the census" and have even searched other counties.  My family unit is as follows:

Father:  Thomas Quelch born circa 1826, Oxford, Master Bootmaker, Cordwainer
Mother: Eliza Emma Quelch (nee Callaghan) born circa 1828, Bristol (Waistcoat Maker per 1851 census)

Children - pre 1861 cenus:
Jane Emma born circa 1849 St Clement Danes
Eliza born circa 1854 West London
Thomas born circa 1856 (Exact place unknown) (can't find his birth)
Ann born 16 Oct 1860, 6 Market Street, St James's Square, Westminster (have her birth certificate).  This would be my closest reference for the 1861 census.

After 1861 Census
Agnes Mary circa 1862 St James, Westminister
Emma circa 1864 St Clement Danes
Thomas and Eliza Quelch marry 1864 St Martins in the Field, then travel to Australia.

Quelch is a surname that of course has various spellings and I have searched using wildcards and other possible spellings.  All of no luck.

My only last thought before I put this exercise away and stop it from keeping me awake at night, is that they are recorded on the "missing pages" of the 1861 census.

If anyone can offer me any guidance it would be most appreciated.

Help! ???
Suzanne
