Armed Forces / 92nd Regt circa 1794
« on: Friday 11 September 09 14:13 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have any information on this shortlived regiment?  It is NOT the regiment which became the 2nd Gordon Highlanders - they were the 100th at that period.

The regiment was raised by Lt-General George Hewitt who was Adjutant-General in Ireland and only appears in the Army List for 1795.  I understand it was mainly recruited from Ireland but one of my wife's Clackmannanshire ancestors appears to have joined up - he is described as a soldier in Colonel Hewitt's Regiment in the Linlithgow parish register entry for his daughter's baptism in 1794.

I assume the regiment was sent abroad, presumably to the Low Countries in time to be defeated by the French, but it's difficult to be sure whether information on the web refers to Hewitt's regiment or to the Gordons, due to the confusion of the regimental numbers.
