World War One / What is this man's rank? Can anything else be discerned?
« on: Friday 29 July 11 22:51 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
This is a picture of my grandfather. I am trying to find more information about what he did in the first world war. His name is William Ernest Keeling, and I have been told that he was a despatch rider, used to carry homing pigeons on his bike, and that he was in Fromelles at some point. He was also born in 1885.

Anything that can be gathered from this information and the photo would be most useful.
Thank you, everybody and anybody!

Armed Forces / What can be said about this mystery military man?
« on: Thursday 16 September 10 08:56 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I found this photograph in my mum's collection, passed down from her mum, in a box that contains photos mostly from the 1940s, but also a few extending back to the 1910s and forwards to the 1960s.

Unfortunately, there is no writing on the back of the picture, so I don't know who it is.

But he does look rather grand, and with those military bits and pieces that he's wearing, I'm sure somebody here can reveal *something* about him!

So, what do you think?

Thank you!

Hello,
Here is my grandfather and grandmother around the end of the First World War, at Studland in Dorset.
I've been told by my step-father that it looks like he is wearing a Sergeant-Major's uniform.
My mum tells me that he worked with carrier pigeons during the war. After that, he was a postman. He died in 1938, and she carried on until the 1980s. I used to watch snooker with her! We liked Steve Davis and Alex Higgins.
But I digress...

Can any kind souls please do a bit of restore and colour magic?
Thanks ever so much in advance!

:)

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Date for a well dressed young man?
« on: Thursday 26 August 10 08:02 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I find this photo quite interesting.
I get the feeling that these are not his normal clothes.
I also get the feeling that the hat doesn't match the rest of his outfit!
And there he is, sitting on the stone wall as if he'd really rather be somewhere else.

The photograph is on paper, not attached to a card. The rear is blank, and the corners are very slightly rounded (you can see one of the corners at the bottom right - the other corners are exactly the same).

So, can I have your guesses for the date?
Thank you! :)

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Dating for confirmation of who this is.

Hello,
This is 'Aunt Anna'.
I suspect that I know who this is, but for extra confidence, can I have your estimates for the date and age of this Victorian lady?
Most obliged!
:)

Hello,

I've got a photo here with writing on it: "Gt. Grandmother Pate".
According to my research, I would say that the person that wrote it meant a lady born as Elizabeth Drage Brandford, who lived from 1819 - 1857.
She married a man called Robert Pate (1819 - 1876).

So, could this photograph really be from the mid-1950s?
I'll put up the rear of it too.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Date and age for a lady in hat?

This picture has been cut out, so that the possibly very useful message on the rear has been lost.
I'll upload both sides.

But can anybody give some good guesses for the date, and her age?
It might help me narrow down who it could be.

Hello,
I recently found some old family photos. Nobody knows who the people in many of the photos are, so I'm doing my best to figure it out.
There is a group of four, three older women and a boy that feature in a few photos, always looking rather sinister. Though I'm sure they were actually lovely.

Perhaps if I had a good estimate as to the date on one of these, it might help my mission.

So, what do you think?

Dorset Lookup Requests / I'd like to find a grave - help please?
« on: Tuesday 20 April 10 21:31 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I would like to find the grave of my great grandfather, Captain Horace Edwin Cole Littlejohns, if it exists.
He was born in 1880:

And I've been told that he died on 29/06/1946, in Southbourne.

How would I go about such a task?

Thanks for any help!
