Galway / John Leonard of Gortroe, Annaghdown, Co. Galway
« on: Tuesday 02 October 18 17:59 BST (UK)  »
My great grandfather was Edward LEONARD.  He came to the northeast of England sometime before 1866 from Ireland.  He married a lady called Sarah FEENEY, ten years his senior on 24 Nov 1866 at St. Mary's Catholic Chapel, Birtley, near Chester le Street, Co. Durham. He stated that he was 19 years of age.  Father: John LEONARD, a labourer.  Witnesses: Michael HIGGINS and Hannah BURKE. For whatever reason, Edward married again in 1873 to Bridget Ann CORRIGAN (KERRIGAN) in Castle Ward, Northumberland (my great grandmother).  With the 1911 census, I discovered that Edward was from Galway and that fits in with the only other information that I have, which may concern Edward's early life.

I have a very brief, not too well written note to my Mother and Grandmother from a cousin Walter in 1924.  The address is Gortroe, C/O Corrandulla P.O.   That communication ended shortly after when Walter asked my Grandmother and Mother not to write any longer.

Recently, in my searches, I have combed the nli Catholic registers and have found in Annaghdown on 2 Mar 1847 a baptism for what looks like Edward of John Leon'd and Mary Staunton.  Witness: Mrs Staunton (It's on page 75).  I have also found (I think) in both the 1901 and 1911 Irish census a Mary STAUNTON with a son Walter age 26 and 39 respectively.  I have also found in the nli Annaghdown Catholic Registers a marriage on 27 Dec 1856 a marriage between a John STAUNTON and a Mary BURKE.  If John STAUNTON and Mary STAUNTON are brother and sister that would make Edward LEONARD and Walter STAUNTON cousins.  Am I making too much up?  If anyone has any suggestions as to what I can consider fact and where I go from here, I would be so grateful.  I've been researching my LEONARD for 12 years now and would love to find out more.

South Africa / Ivan Alexander Stark
« on: Thursday 28 November 13 08:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hello there
Please, can anyone give me any information at all about Ivan Alexander STARK born abt 1915 in UK.  His original occupation was draughtsman.  I don't know if he continued in this line of work after WW2 when he emigrated to South Africa.  He married Jacoba Lockner/Luckner in the early 1950s and lived, at some point, at Palantine Road, Johannesburg.

Northumberland Completed Look up Requests / Newcastle Gaol
« on: Sunday 13 October 13 08:19 BST (UK)  »
William TENCH was declared bankrupt in May 1847 by Newcastle Court of bankruptcy.  He became an insolvent debtor again in Feb 1857 and ended up in Newcastle Gaol as a prisoner for debt.  I believe his crime was described as "larceny".  Can anyone suggest where I might search to find the records of Newcastle Gaol, please?

Armed Forces / VAD
« on: Friday 13 September 13 08:04 BST (UK)  »
I'm not sure if I am in the correct forum here.  My dilemma is that I have an ancestor from Co. Durham, who was a VAD nurse during WW1.  She did receive at least one medal and she is said to have spent time in France in WW1.  That is all that I know of her career.  Can anyone tell me how to find out more, please? :)

Northumberland Completed Look up Requests / Howlett Hall
« on: Tuesday 10 September 13 18:32 BST (UK)  »
I came across this place name recently as an address in Haydon Bridge probably before the Newcastle to Carlisle railway line was built in the late 1820s early 1830s.  I cannot find it on any of the old maps or am I just not seeing it?  Suggestions, please. :)

Durham / IGI

It's not a new topic really.  It's the Durham Bishops' Transcripts on Family Search.  Once, at the page that I am after, I can't make the page gradually zoom in or out until it is the size that I am after.  Additionally, I can't move the page up or down.  What am I doing wrong with this updated site?  I had no difficulty on the pilot site.  Can you help me, please? :(

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Belts of Bossal
« on: Saturday 16 July 11 09:28 BST (UK)  »
I have ancestors in the northeast of England, who I believe came originally from Bossal in Yorkshire.  Can anyone suggest where I start looking for the link between Yorkshire and Durham or does anyone have any information about the Belt family, please? :-\

My Grandfather was born in County Durham in the late 1800s and the district, in which he was born, is stated as "Boyne".  Does anypone know what that word refers to?
