East Lothian (Haddingtonshire) / Oxford Family
« on: Monday 31 July 23 22:28 BST (UK)  »

To expand my family tree, I am trying to trace members of the Oxford family who as far as I know resided in the Edinburgh area pre 1953.  My aunt Margaret Charlton married William Oxford in Edinburgh between 1953 and 1956. This is all the information I have. Any help would be most appreciated.

Many thanks

Australia / Totally Lost and confused
« on: Sunday 11 June 23 20:19 BST (UK)  »
I am really needing some help, my mind is addled and I have hit a big brick wall.  I agreed to help my daughter-in-law to do some research on her father's family of which she has only limited knowledge.
I am currently trying to find information on her father's sister ELLEN FINLAY born Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne, England in 1911.  The only information my daughter-in-law has that in 1934 ELLEN married EDWARD SMURTHWAITE born in 1912 (birthplace unknown) at Newcastle-upon-Tyne and in 1935 they had a son JOHN EDWIN SMURTHWAITE.  In 1939 the family appear on the Census in Newcastle.  My daughter-in-law is certain she remembers her Aunt emigrating to Australia when she was a child, she was born 1965.  I have checked passenger lists but the only thing I have come up with is a record for JOHN EDWIN SMURTHWAITE going to America and then ending up in Australia.  No evidence of a death in England for Ellen, but there is info available for an ELLEN
SMURTHWAITE who is buried in Hindmarsh Cemetery in South Australia.  Furthermore I have checked for EDWARD SMURTHWAITE in Australia but drawn a blank there also.  On checking deaths for him in England find that his death is registered in 1991 and took place at Tynemouth, Northumberland.  This has got me going around in circles now and hope other eyes might get me on the right track again.

Would be most appreciative of any help I can get.

Many thanks,

Northumberland / William Campbell Finlay
« on: Thursday 25 May 23 17:45 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can help please.  I am currently trying to help a relative who knows nothing at all about her paternal father's family and so is eager to find some information.  I have located the family as far gt.grandfather William Campbell Finlay, born 1849 Morpeth, Northumberland.  He married Frances Marley at All Saints Church, Newcastle in 1870 and I have the family to date.  Where I am really hitting a brick wall is trying to find William Campbell's parents with any certainty.  I don't seem to be able to locate his parents on the 1851 or 1861 Census so perhaps some of our more experienced researchers than I may be able to untangle for me and would be very grateful of any assistance.

Many thanks.

Angus (Forfarshire) / Death
« on: Wednesday 01 September 21 19:56 BST (UK)  »
Hello Rootschatters,

I wonder if someone can point me in the right direction please, at the moment I feel as though I am swimming against the tide in trying to find anything out about my gt.grandfather.  William Johnson was born in Worksop, Nottinghamshire c.1836. He married Caroline Hall born c1840 at Kirkwhelpington, Northumberland on 12 May, 1863.  In 1871 William and Caroline with family appear on the Census for Rosedale, Yorkshire,  However, by 1881 I find the family with two additional children  on the Scottish Census for Craig in Angus living at 3 Usan Rd. Craig Forfarshire. William is not at home and Caroline is shown as Head of the family. My grandmother Ann is only two months old so where is William?  I have tried to find a death for him prior to my grandmother's birth but without success and not sure what happens to the family after that, but in 1891 they are back in England living in Hawthorn Cresc. Southwick, Sunderland and Caroline is shown as widowed.  To add to the confusion a member of another site has sent me information of 1881 Census Return showing Caroline and family living with a George Baxter a good few years her senior stating George as Head and Caroline as wife and her family including my grandmother Ann with their status being recorded as sons/daughters, although they all recorded as Johnson.  Now it begs the question was my grandmother and her elder sister born to Caroline and William or Caroline and George Baxter?  I really don't know where to go now to try and sort this out.  Any help or advice would be most appreciated.

Durham / bigamy
« on: Monday 03 May 21 20:46 BST (UK)  »
My brain is addled can anyone help please.   My grandfather had a brother, both born out of wedlock at New Durham in 1876. His mother, Ann Westgarth married a Joseph Wilson in 1880 and appears on the 1881 Census for Helmington Row with her husband and two boys who are listed as Wilson.  Sadly Ann died in 1881/82. By 1891 Joseph seems to be with relatives but after that the trail goes cold regarding my grandfather's brother Thomas, Growing up I never heard Thomas mentioned, so decided to try and do some research.  Using all the resources I could think of and hitting a brick wall, I casually looked at the criminal records and it looks as though Thomas has been a 'bad apple'  He seems to have fouled the law several times.  Apparently he married a Mary Elizabeth ? between 1901 and August 26th 1905 an during that time also married  a Jane Donaldson and used the name John Thomas Wilson - he was sentenced to 6 months in prison for Bigamy.  I can't find a marriage record for Thomas to either of these two ladies or what happened to either.  I have noted on the report that he is recorded with both names Westgarth and Wilson, so I am confused as to how I move on to try and find out more.  Anyone any suggestions?.

I have just found out that a member of our family was adopted.  Only found this out when checking 1901 census where he was listed with his correct name with adopted added.  Anyone able to tell me how I can find out more about him.

Many thanks

Canada / Relatives in Quebec? Canada
« on: Tuesday 05 November 19 19:15 GMT (UK)  »
I have relatives who emigrated to Canada around 1955.  They were born in UK in the late 1920's, so I am unsure if they are still alive. I have found two voting list entries from the early 1970's which could be them but I have no knowledge of researching in Canada.  I have the names and birth years of their two firstborn children, born in Canada, but would appreciate any help in tracing deaths of their parents or establishing if they are still possibly alive.

Please P.M. me if anyone can help.

Many many thanks.

Sussex Lookup Requests / Charles Frederick Portlock
« on: Monday 21 May 18 19:11 BST (UK)  »
I would appreciate it so much if any Rootschatter could help me break down a very long standing brick wall.  Every avenue I explore becomes a dead end.

Charles Frederick Schellenberg was born in Sunderland to Eleanor Bulmer and Charles Frederick Schellenberg in 1901.  There was no marriage for Eleanor and Charles Frederick Snr despite giving her name as Eleanor Schellenberg on the child's birth certificate.

After many years I have traced Eleanor, finding her on the 1911 Census married to a George Harrison Portlock. They married in c1903 after the death of George Harrison Portlock's first wife.  At that time they were living in Hector Street, Gateshead, Durham along with George's family to his first wife.  Young Charles Frederick would have been about two years old when they married and on the 1911 Census he appears as a 9 yr old with the name Portlock and listed as son.  It seems that at some point after this, most of the family moved to Cuckfield in Sussex.  Eleanor and George both died there, but I have drawn a complete and utter blank as to what happened to Charles Frederick, which is where my interest lies, as he is the one directly related to our family.

I have even contacted members on another site who share the same interest, but for some reason they have chosen not to respond to my message.

Any help or ideas would be so much appreciated as I think I have explored every avenue open to me, perhaps I have missed something !!

Many thanks,

Doric
