Europe / French-Swiss Phonetics
« on: Friday 31 October 08 12:03 GMT (UK)  »
I have a question on Anglo-French phonetics. The records I have from 1750-1800 are entered as they sounded to the English scribe, which is not necessarily as they would be written. How would the name DEDEROD, from Anieres near Geneva, spoken by a French speaker sound to an English person? For example, is the final ‘D’ silent, to give Dead-er-row, say?

Many thanks,

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / A Date For These Photos Please
« on: Friday 08 February 08 13:33 GMT (UK)  »
These two photos were (almost certainly) taken in the same session - there are two more in the set - the respective husbands; all feature the 'prop of the day' fur rug. The young lady married in 1902, and appears to be wearing a wedding ring.

The studio in Leeds was a fair way from their home (I have other photographs of them taken in Castleford and Wakefield, which are much closer), so this must have been a special outing.  I assume that prints were collected the same day that the pictures were taken?

A date for the pictures would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Nigel

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Could Someone Date This Please?
« on: Friday 01 February 08 17:42 GMT (UK)  »
This is something to do with Working Mens Clubs (CIU), and convalescent homes.

I'd really appreciate ideas and guesses at the date.

Many thanks,

Nigel

The Common Room / Multiple Weddings
« on: Friday 01 February 08 08:36 GMT (UK)  »
I have an ancestor married 24 December 1848 at St Philips, Bethnal Green, the last registered of 5 marriages that day.

Does anyone know if it is likely that there was one ceremony with the 5 couples or would there be 5 seperate ceremonies (maybe interspered with a few christenings and burials?).

The Common Room / Restrictions On Widower Marriages?
« on: Saturday 26 January 08 12:15 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know if there were restrictions on where a widower could remarry?

It seems that they had to avoid the church where they had married previously.

A case in point is William Lightfoot (1787-1862). He was born in Ryther, but spent his life in nearby Cawood (Yorkshire - near Selby). He was an Agricutural Laborer (sometime small scale Farmer or Gardener).

He married Sarah Nicholson in 1811 in Cawood. She must have died between 1827 and 1830.

In 1830 he remarries to Mary Bland from Cawood at St Denys, York. They live in Cawood and christen their children there. She dies Jun Qtr 1841.

In July 1842 he remarries to Elizabeth Coussans (born Wistow, near Cawood) at Holy Trinity, Goodramgate, York. They live in Cawood. She dies Dec Qtr 1852.

In Mar Qtr 1853 he remarries at St Mary, Hull to Alice Newsom (again local to Cawood) - at last a wife that outlives him! They live in Cawood.

So, it appears that his work would not take him to York or Hull and that all his wives were from the Cawood area. Was he not allowed to remarry in the same church he married his first wife in?

This 'well-loved' photograph is of my wife's grandfather, George Henry Aston (1881-1960), greengocer and hawker of Streethouse, West Riding of Yorkshire; together with his horse Charlie.

Could someone restore it to its former glory?

Many Thanks,

Nigel

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Fun Photo Date and Restore, Please
« on: Thursday 17 January 08 07:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everybody,

Could you suggest a date for this picture?
Also, suggest an age for the subject - I'd say 40's, but I'm not very good at guessing ages. I can't see a wedding ring, though it may be hidden.
When did 'fun' photos come into fashion? I have quite a few - weird family!
I'd appreciate it if someone could clean the image up.

Many thanks,

Nigel

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Date of this Photo and Ages, Please
« on: Friday 11 January 08 13:10 GMT (UK)  »
Could you, please suggest when this picture was taken and the ages of the subjects?

It was taken at the studios of T.Legge, Walsall Street, Bilston. They must be relatives, cousins or nieces of either Samuel Aston (1838-1907) or his wife Elizabeth Tennant (1840-1917). They left Bilston between 1871 and 1874, along with brother Benjamin Aston and settled in West Yorkshire (both coal miners). Benjamin returned to Bilston around 1877, but then moved to Burslem near Stoke. I have pretty complete records of the Astons and Tennants, and there does not appear to be an obvious link to those in the photograph. So, a rough date and thoughts on their ages would be helpful.

Many thanks,

Nigel
