Does anyone know if there were restrictions on where a widower could remarry?
It seems that they had to avoid the church where they had married previously.
A case in point is William Lightfoot (1787-1862). He was born in Ryther, but spent his life in nearby Cawood (Yorkshire - near Selby). He was an Agricutural Laborer (sometime small scale Farmer or Gardener).
He married Sarah Nicholson in 1811 in Cawood. She must have died between 1827 and 1830.
In 1830 he remarries to Mary Bland from Cawood at St Denys, York. They live in Cawood and christen their children there. She dies Jun Qtr 1841.
In July 1842 he remarries to Elizabeth Coussans (born Wistow, near Cawood) at Holy Trinity, Goodramgate, York. They live in Cawood. She dies Dec Qtr 1852.
In Mar Qtr 1853 he remarries at St Mary, Hull to Alice Newsom (again local to Cawood) - at last a wife that outlives him! They live in Cawood.
So, it appears that his work would not take him to York or Hull and that all his wives were from the Cawood area. Was he not allowed to remarry in the same church he married his first wife in?
