Dunbartonshire / Parents of John Manners
« on: Monday 12 June 17 06:42 BST (UK)  »
I need assistance to locate the parents of John Manners. He married Agnes Montgomery 3.3.1815 in Dumbarton, according to the O.P.R. He is listed in the Dunbarton Monumental Inscriptions book at Dunbarton Churchyard having died 21.11.1840. My thoughts are that his father was John Manners and mother Helen Bull/Bole. A John Manners was born to this couple on 4.12.1789 in Glasgow, according to the O.P.R. Which suggests that John was 26 years of age when he married Agnes and aged 56 when he died. But to date I have not found any other information to prove his parentage. I have all other information regarding his family going forward but just need to know I have the right parents.

Thank you in advance.

Australia / Police Investigations 1945 Victoria Australia
« on: Sunday 09 April 17 02:10 BST (UK)  »
Could anyone point me in the right direction to research how police went about searching for missing persons in 1945. Was there a particular department dedicated to this - especially being wars end - lots of people were probably listed as missing. I am not searching for a particular person but want to understand how the police force worked at that time.

Thanks in advance

Australia / William Andrew Stanton
« on: Monday 11 July 16 07:42 BST (UK)  »
William was born 20 Sep 1878 Pennant Hills NSW, Aust to William Stanton and Matilda Anlezark.
He married Grace Maud Christina Rootes 24 Sep 1900 Sydney.
William located 1913 at 56 Douglas Street, (possibly Glebe) with Grace. Occuption listed as carpenter.
It is possible he was at 16 Garden Avenue, Glebe in 1928 but not with Grace.
Grace was living 3 Wright St Arncliffe in 1935. She died 22 Aug 1955 at Liverpool, NSW.
Her death notice in the newspaper does not mention her husband William.

Despite searching all bdms, electoral rolls, newspapers, articles, war records and anything else I could think off I have not been able to locate a death for William. I expect he either died before Grace or there was some family break-up.

Can anyone help me find this man?

Thanks

The Common Room / Maiden Island, Argyll, Scotland
« on: Monday 22 February 16 23:38 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone give me more information about this island. All I can find on the internet is that it is a grassy island and information about legends attached to it. I want to know if a small dingy could reach it from the area under Dunollie Castle. Is it rocky all around, Are there any trees or wildlife on the island. If someone wanted to hide out on the island would they be able to find cover so that they could not be seen from the mainland or other islands or ships that pass. Don't worry I'm not trying to hide out but my character in my next novel may need to.

Thanks

Scotland / Ship Lady Turner
« on: Thursday 24 September 15 04:51 BST (UK)  »
John Manners obtained his seaman's ticket in 1839 and boarded the ship Lady Turner - record states lost at sea 1846 - not sure if this is just John being lost or if the vessel was lost. I need help locating information about this ship. Not recorded in Log of Logs, could not find newspaper report of the ship missing or otherwise.

Any ideas where else I can look.

Thanks

The Common Room / Shipping Records
« on: Friday 18 September 15 05:18 BST (UK)  »
There are many lists for passengers to the USA from 1840-1852, but where can I locate crew records.

William Manners mentions in a letter that he was either in California - gold fields - or on ship Carthogena - unfortunately the writing is so smudged I can't make out whether he is talking about California or the ship. So far I have not been able to locate him as a passenger to San Francisco.

He appears on the 1840 census Dunbarton and then arrives in Victoria on the ship Ivanhoe leaving Glasgow 16 June 1853 arriving 15 September 1853.

I cannot locate him as a passenger on vessels leaving San Francisco either, I expect vessels arrived and departed other ports during the gold rush period, but if he was a crew member who jumped ship how and where might I locate this information.

Thanks
Shirley
