Armed Forces / Cap Badge
« on: Friday 16 April 10 18:51 BST (UK)  »
I have a photo of my Great Grandfather in Army uniform and I would like to know which regiment he served in.
He was born in 1877.
The cap badge looks like a horse running with the name maybe underneath. It's so small though on the photo.
He lived in lancashire if that's any help.

Thank you  ;D

Lancashire / Robert Davies b.1847 d.1881
« on: Saturday 10 April 10 17:17 BST (UK)  »
is missing from the 1871 census.

I have him b.1847 (ish) Bolton
1851 living Bolton
1861 living Bolton
1871 ?
1872 married Eliza Sixsmith
1881 living Stockton Durham awaiting his ship
1881 died in Odessa Russia whilst onboard ship Hesper

His parents (Abel and Margaret) and siblings are on the 1871 but he isn't.
I wonder if he was at sea and how do I search ship census records?

Can anyone help fill in the last piece of my jigsaw?

The Common Room / Death at Sea
« on: Friday 02 April 10 22:27 BST (UK)  »
I have just found on BMD reference to a Robert Davies death at sea in 1881 (BT 159 03)

Is there anywhere else I could possibly view the image without buying credits? I know it's only £2.50 and am willing to pay if necessary I just wanted to check first.

Thank you

Immigrants & Emigrants - General / Lost at sea or not?
« on: Thursday 01 April 10 21:59 BST (UK)  »
Robert Davies b.1847 Bolton, Lancs (calculated from headstone) d. 24 Sep 1881 and was interred Odessa Russia
He was a steam ship stoker.

My Mum was always under the impression that he was lost at sea but I can't find any evidence of any ships going down at that time.
Also if he was interred wouldn't that mean he couldn't be lost at sea?

I'm am majorly stuck on this one and any ideas would be gratefully received.

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Crew List Lookup PLease
« on: Saturday 20 March 10 16:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I'm hoping somebody can do a crew look up for me as I don't have access to the correct website.
I am looking for

Robert Davies
b. 1847 ish
he was a steamship stoker and died in 1881 and interred in Odessa Russia. We were always lead to believe that he was lost at sea but this doesn't explain the interment.
I'm not sure where he was born could've been Wales but also Bolton area, Lancashire.
His widow was Eliza Davies (nee Sixsmith).

I hope somebody may be able to help
