The Common Room / age of ppl listed in directories?
« on: Tuesday 02 May 17 12:22 BST (UK)  »
Just wondering what everyone thinks about this...

i have a person in my tree who in an 1855 directory for boston spa is listed as a joiner, this fits perfectly, he lived there and was a joiner.. im not aware of another guy with the job.
the entry is doubled as in theres 2 identical ones which says to me there was a son or at least another family member with the same name and job with him.

can i find the other guy?? errr nope. the census for the family looks as though there were no children but given the dates its possible that for whatever reason the kids were away for the earliest census and moved out for the second.. i cant even find one for somebody who might be the second guy.

so i was wondering how do you miss the census? at least the early one anyway how old or rather young could you be listed in a directory?

The Common Room / appearing & dissapearing? no b,m or d...
« on: Wednesday 02 November 16 09:50 GMT (UK)  »
Im just wondering how common it is and how if at all anyone has resolved the problem of people that seem to have no birth, marriage or death records?

I seem to be collecting folk who only exist by leaving a will (that i cant find) or mentioned in a will as a son/brother etc but no other proof they even existed. is there a magical parish out there that contains all of these ppl?  what other ways can i track them down?

looking for some ideas, name changes  ;D link to online magical PR  ;D

Just a warning to anyone researching Knaresborough..

At the moment I believe I have found a whole batch (how many exactly I dont know) of transcription entries for St John the Baptist, Knaresborough on Find My Past wrongly giving St Mary Roman Catholic Church as its place. They are Transcriptions only and not the image linked entries as far as I can see but I have notified FindMyPast to have it looked at..

Just thought a heads up untill it gets sorted would be handy

Regards

UPDATE: THERE ARE ENTRIES ALSO LISTED UNDER WESLYAN METHODIST WHICH ARE ANGLICAN & HAVE IMAGES ATTACHED,  again correct information but wrong Church & record set

Yorkshire (North Riding) / CofE, Catholic or Methodist? Knaresborough Records
« on: Saturday 22 October 16 10:55 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Im currently working on a branch of ppl in Knaresborough around the late 1700s early 1800s and Im now cnnfused by the search results on FindMyPast. There appears to be multiple hits for the same children being baptised but depending on the record sources they have multiple denominations. Has anyone come across this before or know whats happening???

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Craven & County Palatine of Lancaster Crossover.
« on: Tuesday 17 November 15 08:49 GMT (UK)  »
Hi I'm looking to get some help with where the borders of the old county palatine of Lancaster crossover into craven. The lead I have on someone states in an old visitation that they are

"of Craven, in the county palatine of Lancaster"
this was given about 1600 but the person would be around 1500

I realise there isn't really a border so its almost impossible but hoping someone with more knowledge can help me narrow it down as there isn't a whole lot up there! :)  so far my best guess using Speeds map of the palatine and the most detailed Craven map i can find put me in a 20x10 mile area more or less but how Ive managed to draw it out actually gives me a space that is roughly the forest of Bowland, Wolfescrag, Wyresdale and Sykes, across to Slaidburn and then a funny sliver of towns that would be Gilkirk, Bracewell, Sawley, Grindleton and possibly Waddington

can anyone tell me if I'm on the mark or how far off it for that matter???

also the son is given as being craven (i have him as being of skipton) but not craven in the county palatine of Lancaster.

I have a probate record which reads....

Chippindale, Alfred of Lawndale 22 Farnley-lane Otley Yorkshire died 4 October 1922.....

common sense tells me that Lawndale would be a house name or at least an area of Otley as this man was born, always (to my knowledge via census) lived in Otley and died in Otley but I cant seem to find anything on it at all. Has anyone heard of it before or have any ideas about how i would find it somewhere?

thanks, Laura
