England / Can I find out who was the owner of a property in London in the 1940s?
« on: Monday 16 January 17 09:08 GMT (UK)  »
My mother claims to recall being told that the property (73 College Road, Willesden) she lived in as a child in the late 1940s was owned by her grandmother - although this seems unlikely since her grandmother was a cleaning lady that struggled to make ends meet.
Is there any way of ordering the title to the property so that we can find out for sure one way or the other, my mother has a real bee in her bonnet about this    ;D
We are in Australia so it would have to be online or by snail mail.

I'm trying to find a John DONALD, in a newspaper article dated 01 April 1871 he charges someone with assault after claiming they kicked him in the head at a public house, one of the witnesses is his brother Richard DONALD. Richard is my great x? grandfather, but I have never encountered John before.
John is described as "an upholsterer, of 78 Bramley Road" (Kensington) this is Richard's address but John is not there in the 1871 census.
Richard was born about 1837 in the City of London, his parents are Richard Kent DONALD a smith b about 1813 in Marylebone and Mary MULLOGHNY b about 1815 Ireland. They married in 1837.
John is not with the family in 1851 or 1861 and I can't find them in 1841.

The Common Room / Was there any penalty if your baby died of neglect? London 1882
« on: Saturday 11 January 14 10:35 GMT (UK)  »
There was an inquest into the death of Louisa Collier, aged six weeks, daughter of a bricklayer, of 17 Harpenden-terrace, Kilburn, whose death is alleged to have been caused by neglect.
The mother, Fanny Collier was getting "the worse for drink" and not taking the baby to the dispensary for medical assistance as her husband believed, consequently it died.
"The coroner said that if the deceased had received medical attention it's life might have been saved, and there was no doubt but what the mother was deserving of censure. The jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence, adding that the death was accelerated by want of medical attendance, and that the mother was to blame"

So would Fanny have been punished in any way or would that have been the end of it?

The Lighter Side / What venereal disease would this be?

This is from a divorce hearing, what disease are they likely to be referring to and could it really be cured and caught again before there was antibiotics?

"2.In the year 1869 the said James William Wildey committed adultery with some woman who is unknown to this Respondent and thereby contracted a venereal disease.
3.That in or shortly before the month of July or August 1872 the said James Wildey  committed adultery with some woman who is unknown to this Respondent and thereby contracted a venereal disease.
4.That in the month of July or August 1872 the said James Wildey wilfully or recklessly communicated a venereal disease to this Respondent.
5.That in or shortly before the month of December 1872 the said James Wildey committed adultery with some woman who is unknown to this Respondent and thereby contracted a venereal disease."

Gloucestershire / Where might 'Sheddon' be?
« on: Tuesday 18 December 12 15:27 GMT (UK)  »
In the 1861 census William Parker gave his place of birth as Sheddon Gloucester.  Any ideas where that could be?
In 1871 and 1881 it says only Gloucestershire.

I've found a record for a marriage and baptism on Ancestry but it's in French  :( so I can't read it. It looks like the baptism and marriage of  Marguerite Johnston to Tancrede     Cool in 1924 in Montreal and also Marguerite's daughter Rita Wildy.

Can any one tell me if it says what happened to Marguerite's first husband (Percy James Wildey), e.g. does it say she is a widow. Also would there be any reason that she is called Marguerite Johnston (her maiden name) and not Wildey?

Also Rita had aleady been baptized in Congregational Calvary church, is she getting re-baptised because they are becoming Catholics?

Thanks...

The Common Room / Mundays on the run in 1881?
« on: Tuesday 11 May 10 05:06 BST (UK)  »
My Munday ancestors were ag labs in Waddeson Buckinghamshire for every census except 1881. Luckily because the wife has such an unusal first name I found an awfully similar looking family in Tharston Norfolk except with changed names.
The head was John Saveings instead of Ephraim Munday and all the rest of the family have the surname Saveings too.

In 1871

     Etarah Munday
[Atarah Munday]
Age:    35
Estimated birth year:    abt 1836
Relation:    Wife
Spouse's name:    Ephraim
Gender:    Female
Where born:    Waddesdon, Buckinghamshire, England
Civil parish:    Waddesdon
County/Island:    Buckinghamshire

Ephraim Munday    31
Etarah Munday    35
Annie Munday    7
Elizabeth Munday    6
George Munday    2
William Munday    8 months

In 1881
Name:    Atarah Saveings
Age:    46
Estimated birth year:    abt 1835
Relation:    Wife
Spouse's name:    John
Gender:    Female
Where born:    Waddesdon, Buckinghamshire, England

Civil parish:    Tharston
County/Island:    Norfolk

John Saveings    42
Atarah Saveings    46
Annie Saveings    18
George Saveings    12
William Saveings    10
Sarah Saveings    8

At first I thought it must just be a mistake but I have found the daughter Annie marrying in 1882 as Annie Saveings and giving her father's name as John Savings. Later she is widowed and remarries in 1903 then giving her father's name as Ephraim Munday.
I also suspect the name Sav(e)ings was Atarah's mother's maiden name.

So it looks like they were hiding under false names, but from what?
Whatever it was can't have been too bad because they were back in Waddesdon by 1891.
Any ideas how I could find out what they were up to?
