Leicestershire / 1918 Flu in Leicester
« on: Thursday 24 May 07 09:49 BST (UK)  »
My Great Uncle died in the center of Leicester in November 1918 from Flu his widow was the informant on the death certificate and was also in Leicester but the death is registered as a Coventry death ???. I wondered was the flu very bad in Leicester and so some of the registrations were made by Coventry? I can't think of any other reason at the moment why it is recorded by Coventry as none of the family had any connections with Coventry and the death was in the center of Leicester not in the County on the Coventry side. He is buried at the Welford Road Cemetery.

If anyone knows or has a theory about that I'd be interested to hear.

Thanks,
Martyn

Leicestershire / Belgrave Hall, Easter evernt?
« on: Sunday 28 January 07 22:27 GMT (UK)  »
I think I saw somewhere on the Internet that there was going to be an event at Belgrave Hall during easter about the people of the area. Unfortunately I did not take a note at the time. When I look on their web site I can't see anything and I did not get a reply to the e-mail I sent. I phoned today bet the person there did not know anything about it. I live outside the county now but was going to come up for this event as my 3 X great grandparents were married there in 1802 and she was born there. My family stayed in Belgrave until well into the 20th century so it would be of interest to me if there is such an event on. Has anyone else heard of it or have a good contact at the Hall?

Thanks,
Martyn

Dublin / Where is / was St Lukes parish in Dublin?
« on: Friday 05 January 07 20:29 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
Can anyone help me with the location of the St Luke's parish in Dublin? My GGGgrandparents (William and Elizabeth Healy) and their first daughter (Eliz) came from there sometime between 1825 and 1829. I've had a search on various maps and can't find the area. I did find a couple of references to St Luke's and St Nicholas Without but it sounds like they may have been redeveloped. Any help with this would be much appreciated, I hope to visit Ireland later this year so I am trying to get some basic information together before my visit.
Thanks,
Martyn

Leicestershire / St Michael All Angels Church, Belgrave, does it still exist?
« on: Monday 18 December 06 11:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

Does anyone know if St Michael All Angels Church, Belgrave is still about? I can't find anything on the web about it. A relative was married there in 1903. I suspect there will be other family events there as well.

Thanks,
Martyn

Nottinghamshire / Attenborough Railway Stationmaster
« on: Friday 26 May 06 14:09 BST (UK)  »
I think the Station master at the Attenborough Railway Station in Nottinghamshire around 1929 was a relative of mine named Swift but I do not know which one. I think it will be either Harry G. Swift or Herbert A Swift. They come from a railway family their farther Herbert was a Stationmaster for 40 years and their grandfather was also a Stationmaster as were two of their uncles and the third Uncle was a railway Guard. They also had one uncle by marriage that was a Railway engine driver and another that was a time keeping porter on the railway.

If anyone has access to a directory of this time for Nottinghamshire and can help I'd very much appreciate it.

Thank you,
Martyn

Derbyshire / Hazelwood in the Forest of Duffield book
« on: Tuesday 23 May 06 08:55 BST (UK)  »
Apparently my GGUncle Herbert Swift wrote a book called "Hazelwood in the Forest of Duffield" after his retirement as the Stationmaster there. It was published in 1931 does anyone know if it's ever been reprinted or if any libraries have a copy? I'm coming up to Derbyshire on Saturday for the Family History Fair and wondered if there was any chance I'd find a copy.

Thanks,
Martyn

Lancashire / Kirkdale Gaol records
« on: Tuesday 21 February 06 15:30 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know if these records are still around anywhere. A relative was apparently quite a regular "visitor" and I've tried TNA and The Liverpool Record Office and they are not there apparently. Anyone now where the records are?

Leicestershire / Old handwrighting translation
« on: Sunday 13 November 05 08:58 GMT (UK)  »
I recently found on the National Achieve web site the will for a Samuel Clay dated 1745. I have a Samuel Clay some 20 years later living 20 miles away from where this Samuel Clay and the eldest son of my Samuel was also called Samuel. I thought that this could be a relative and downloaded the will (8 pages) but unfortunately although it is very well reproduced and neat the writing style is defeating me for most of the document. Has anyone had an old document "translated" if so where and how much does it cost?

Thanks,
Martyn

Armed Forces / British Merchant crews called up in WWI?
« on: Friday 28 October 05 14:41 BST (UK)  »
When a merchant ship was requisitioned in WW I were the crew called up to man it? I wonder because my wife’s grandfather was in the crew of the Manx paddle steamer “Empress Queen” up to the war when it was used as a troop ship and I wonder if he would have been called up. Would the crew lists be at the National Achieve at Kew?
