Dublin / Thoms look-up request: 1922 and 1937
« on: Sunday 19 July 09 13:14 BST (UK)  »
Shane and eadaoin kindly offered to do look-ups in Thoms. I would be very grateful for a look-up on a business run by my ggrandmother.  Here are the details I know:

Name: Mary Anne Kearney (or possibly Philip Kearney);
Business: shop/newsagent;
Dates: about 1920 to 1940;
Location: Tyrconnell Road, Inchicore, Dublin 8 (or possibly neighbouring streets: Tyrconnell Street, Tyrconnell Park, Ring Terrace, O'Donoghue Street);
Other information: the same building also housed a business run by a family called Gillet.

Sorry to be vague about the street.  The shop was close to the Oblate Church of Saint Mary Immaculate, which is on Tyrconnell Road.

Would appreciate any help to figure out what my ancestor worked at.

Also attached another handwriting sample from the same document.

Dublin / Saint Patrick's House
« on: Saturday 11 July 09 17:25 BST (UK)  »
The following details are on a death certificate:

Superintendent Registrar's District - Dublin South
Registrar's District - No. 1, South City
Date of death: 29 May 1915
Place of death: St. Patrick's House.

I think there used to be a Saint Patrick's House on the South Circular Road (in recent years converted to an apartment complex).  But does anyone know of another Saint Patrick's that would fit the description?  The deceased was Roman Catholic.

Ireland / Copyright on Irish BMD certs
« on: Saturday 11 July 09 16:48 BST (UK)  »
Is it permissible to post scans of BMD certificates, obtained from the General Register Office, on the RootsChat site?  I do not want to contravene any copyright considerations.  Perhaps a mod. could advise.

Ireland / BMD registered at the GRO Dublin
« on: Wednesday 08 July 09 18:29 BST (UK)  »
Over the past few months I have got a lot of family BMD certificates from the General Register Office (GRO) in Dublin.  They all date between the mid 19 century and the 1920s.  I have some questions regarding the way the records were prepared.  Perhaps someone knowledable on these matters could help.

Take an example of a birth cert: Superintendent Registrar's District - North Dublin.  Registrar's District - North City 2.
There are 11 columns with various data, such as names and dates.  Is the photocopy that the GRO gives me for my 4 Euro a copy of the entry in the original register?  Or is the photocopy merely a copy of an entry in a  duplicate register?  In other words, where does the original register reside: with the Registrar (e.g. North City 2) with the Superintendent (e.g. North Dublin) or with the GRO?

Since posting the picture I found this description on my grandfather's application for a U.S. passport:

- Forehead: High
- Eyes: Brown
- Nose: Medium
- Mouth: Medium
- Chin: Dimpled
- Hair: Auburn
- Complexion: Fair
- Face: Fair
