Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Finding third great grandfather by dna matching
« on: Thursday 14 January 21 05:14 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All
I am trying to link a George Marlin (1807) as my third great grandfather by DNA matching.

I have DNA matches to at least two of George's descendants, one through his son and another through his daughter. I cannot link either of these two matches to any of my ancestors. I suspect that my second great grandmother Elizabeth (1839) could be George's daughter, though some family members won't have a bar of this.

Elizabeth's line is quite complicated, however I will try to make some sense of it:
1. I have established beyond reasonable doubt that my relationship to Elizabeth is through my
    paternal grandmother Mary (Elizabeth's granddaughter)
2.My half 1c1r also has a DNA match to one and most likely both of the two of George's children
   mentioned above.
3.At least one other descendant of Elizabeth through her husband James Russell (no direct
relationship to me) has DNA connections to one or more of George's children.

Given that I have no paper trail to George and that my cousin through my grandmother also has a DNA match to George's decendants without a paper trail. As well other descendants of Elizabeth, who do not share the same second great grandfather as me, have DNA matches but no paper trails.

Do you think that it is reasonable to assume that George is the father of Elizabeth?

I appreciate that this could be quite difficult to understand as it was hard to write in a meaningful way. Therefore I am happy to provide any further information and explanations that maybe required. There are a few other complications however I hope this is enough to get the ball rolling.

Australia / Assigned convicts
« on: Saturday 27 April 19 05:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

Just a short question that I haven't found an answer to on the internet.

Could assigned convicts be temporarily lent to other settlers in the same or another district?

Any help would be most appreciated.

United States of America / Virginian Taylor Family
« on: Wednesday 25 July 18 07:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi All
Greetings from Australia

My ggg Grandmother was Mary Ann Taylor born C1800 in Liverpool, Lancashire, UK.
As far as I can ascertain her parents were Henry Taylor (Mariner) and Jane Kellick.
Mary married in London and migrated to Australia with her husband in 1838, on her arrival she claimed both of her parents were dead. On her death certificate her father was listed as Taylor, Master Mariner, there was no mention of her mother.

I have many dna matches with the Taylor family of Virginia going back to James Taylor (1675-1729) and Martha Thompson (1679-1762). In particular the strongest dna readings are with their grandson Richard Lee Taylor, born Rapidan,Orange, Virginia (c1742-1829) and his wife Sarah Strother.

I am working on the theory that the two families are somehow connected. Other information that makes me think this are:
Mary and her husband were associated with the Episcopalian Church in Australia, this is unusual for someone coming to Australia from Britain, particularly as her husband was of German descent. I believe that the Episcopalian Church is of USA origin.
Liverpool was a thriving port and was one of the main shipping ports for the export of tobacco from Virginia to the UK.
Records indicate that Mary Ann's father was a Mariner and there was a naval and tobacco history with the Virginian Taylor family.

I was hoping someone may know if one of the Taylor clan was a merchant seaman who travelled to the UK around 1800 and who may have had a "girl" in two ports.

As the Virginian Taylor family is quite large I am having difficulty in pinpointing any likely connection. I know that this is probable a long shot but any help or comments would be most appreciated.

Down / Robert Ross Rowan
« on: Tuesday 24 July 18 07:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

Greetings from Australia.

I am trying to find any information I can on Robert Ross Rowan born c 1730. Robert is the son of Alexander Rowan (1695) born Rathfryland,  Down and Elizabeth Moore.
I have tried to check through Ancestry family trees but the information seems to be a bit confused and I haven't had any luck with FamilySearch or Irish web sites. However I did find mention of Rvd Robert Ross Rowan in Land Assessment, Ireland Valuation Books, 1838, Ardglass, Count Dow. His family trees have many Reverends in his Ancestors.

To confuse matters it would appear that his son is also Robert Ross Rowan.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I was wondering if anyone can help me with the date James Patrick Ross Snr (1715-1788) arrived in the USA from Ireland.

James was born in Antrim, Ireland and died North Carolina.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Ross family cluster
« on: Monday 09 July 18 06:57 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

I have done an autosomal dna test through Ancestry. My matches show at least a dozen matches to the Ross family of Balbair Scotland. The matches seem to go back to an Irish branch of that family and to the Scottish  branch, both of whom had members migrate to the USA State of North Carolina around the early 1700s. From Ancestry Shared Matches and GedMatch my ancestor appears to be my gg grandmother who migrated to Australia from Ireland in 1842. I have been unable to find any paper trail connection between my ggg, or any other ancestor, and the Ross family.

My question is: Does a cluster of this sort indicate a definite dna connection or is it just a distant mix of ancestors from a common place, I also have many other unidentified connections to Virginia and NC ?

Thanks

England / Antigua Court Martial
« on: Thursday 21 June 18 07:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

I am researching a John Thompson who was transported to NSW Australia as a convict on the "Lord Sidmouth" which sailed from London on 20 September 1818.

He was sentenced to life imprisonment by an Antigua Court Marshall.

Can anyone help or point me in the right direction as to how I can find out any details of the Court Marshall. As he sailed from London I guess he was imprisoned in the UK after the Court Marshall.

Thanks

Armagh / Patrick Rowan
« on: Tuesday 19 June 18 06:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I have been trying to find, without much luck, details of the parents of Hannah Rowan. Hannah came to Australia as a Bounty Immigrant  on the "Carthaginian" in 1842 at the age of 18. She was Roman Catholic and claimed her native place was Newry, Armagh.

She also stated her father was Patrick Rowan and that he was still alive when she arrived in Australia in January 1842. Her mother's name was not stated.

I haven't been able to find any details of Patrick or his wife and thought someone from Ireland maybe able to help or at least provide some clues. It is also possible the name may be a derivative of Rowan eg Roan.

Any thoughts or ideas would be most appreciated.
