Cheshire / CHAMBERLAIN James b.1834 (ish) Heswall
« on: Monday 07 February 11 14:02 GMT (UK)  »
James is my GGGrandfather and I have located him on 1851 census in Brimstage and then on 1881 census with his wife Ellen (Helen on the census) and family. My problem has been trying to locate him in 1861 and 1871. He married Ellen Southern, a widow, in 1872, he was a bachelor. My guess is maybe he was in the military. I have no proof of this but his son James was in the army briefly and there is a mention of a James Chamberlain of Heswall in an old Mersey newspaper, described as a Crimean and Mutiny veteran but no way of knowing whether he is 'my' James. Searches for James in military sections of various family history sites have been unsuccessful.
Any assistance tracking him down would be greatly appreciated.

Cheshire / Coroners reports - Would coroners reports still exist from 1845 ?
« on: Monday 08 March 10 17:12 GMT (UK)  »
Would coroners reports still exist from 1845, and, if so, where would they be? My ancestor was killed by a railway carriage in Birkenhead and the coroner was the informant on the death cert.

Cheshire Lookup Requests / CHAMBERLAIN, James
« on: Sunday 21 February 10 14:51 GMT (UK)  »
Can't be found on 1861 or 1871 census, or at least I can't find him!!! Born 1832 Backford, Cheshire. 1841 census with parents, 1851 a servant in Brimstage, Wirral. 1881 with wife and family in Heswall. Got married 1872. Can find no previous marriage.

Any info. with regards the missing 20 years would be appreciated. It's very likely I'm just rubbish at searching census returns!!

Wiltshire / Shalbourne
« on: Wednesday 10 February 10 20:52 GMT (UK)  »
My LOVELOCK ancestors moved from Shalbourne to North Wales some time between 1871 -1872. They moved to a small village called LLanferres which had a lot of quarries. Does Shalbourne or surrounding area have quarries? There were no other Lovelocks in N. Wales before this family and I can't think why a family of labourers would move so far away. Any help appreciated.

Thanks.

Cheshire / SOUTHERN John from HESWALL
« on: Wednesday 10 February 10 12:17 GMT (UK)  »
John Southern married my Gr.Gr. Grandmother  Ellen Rutter in1864 in Liverpool.  Marriage cert. shows he was a seaman.  Cheshire parish records show baptisms for their 2 children, John Edward bap. 27th May 1867 and Mary Ellen bap. 22nd Dec. 1869, in Heswall and fathers occ. is mariner. The 1871 census shows the children and their mother living with Ellen's parents in Heswall where Ellen is described as a mariners widow.
I would like to find out about John Southern's time as a mariner and where and when he died. I have had a look on TNA archives and found no information. A witness to his marriage is a Miles Woodburn and a search for him as a possible seafaring colleague has drawn a blank. I realise there is very little to go on but any help will be appreciated.

Thanks.

Denbighshire / Lovelocks in LLanferres
« on: Monday 08 February 10 09:50 GMT (UK)  »
I think it may be possible a Gr.Gr. aunt and uncle may have been born and maybe baptised in LLanferres. Their names are Margaret Alice b. 1872 & John Lovelock b. 1874. Can anyone tell me the name of the church in LLanferres and where the records are held?

Thanks.
