World War Two / Royal Artillery help
« on: Sunday 22 November 09 14:05 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for information on my grandfather Leonard Alfred Tyler born 1901 (not sure where). On his marriage certificate he is listed as class 1 Warrant Officer RA which I understand to be Royal Artillery. He was married in 1942 in Gosport whilst based at Lee on solent, but his home address at the time was in Devon. I would like to know wat his role would have been and if I might find his military record. There is something in brackets on his marriage certificate which i can't read. The first word is definitely Physical then it looks like 'gulture', then a word i can't read like 'coneultum ?' would any one out there have a clue what this could be ?

Fermanagh / Ann McHugh

Hi everyone

I've just discovered that my 3xgt-grandmother was born in County Fermanagh in 1836. I wondered if anyone out there would have any info on her family. I do not know her parentage or any siblings. She came to England (Cumbria) sometime before 1855 because she married a Thomas Boyd in Cumbria in September of that year. Any ideas where I could search censuses or online records for information ?

Waterford / David Miller

Hello

I have just discovered that an ancestor who served in the Sherwood Foresters 95th Foot Regiment was in fact born in Waterford. I know very little about him and wondered if anyone could fill any gaps.  He enlisted in 1825 aged 19 and was a weaver.  I would like to know where he enlisted.  He served in the Mediterranean and Ceylon, where his son Thomas was born in 1844.  He married a girl called Mary Ann but I don't have her surname.  I would also like to know where and when they married or if they had other children.  His son Thomas later enlisted in the same regiment as his father, in Dublin in 1859.

I also wonder if there are any records of David's parents

Armed Forces / 95th Derbyshire Foot Regiment

Hi
I'm looking for info on David Miller born around 1814, a corporal in the 95th Derbyshire Foot Regiment, which I believe became the Notts & Derby Sherwood Foresters (correct me if I'm wrong, I know nothing about military history.)  He served in Sri Lanka as his son Thomas was born there in 1844 - I have received his birth certificate.  From this certificate I know David's wife was Mary Ann but I would like to know her surname.  I wonder if they married whilst serving abroad and would it be common for fiances to go abroad when still unmarried at that time.  I would like to find out if he came back to England (I know his family did because his son appears in later censuses here.
I am also looking for more info on his son Thomas who was a sergeant in the same regiment.  I know he served in Ireland (The Curragh) as his first daughter was born there in 1878 and his first son in 1880.  I would like to know if he married whilst in Ireland. His wife was a Lucy Brown.  They appear on the censuses after 1891 so I believe his military connection had stopped by then.

This is a real shut door for my research at the moment as I don't seem to be able to find anything online.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks

Cumberland / Help please with Toppings in Workington

Ok. I'm new to rootschat and my first post is tricky.  I am desperate to make headway with my research on the Topping family.  My gt grandmother was Mary Topping born in Workington roughly 1879 to James and Ann Topping.  I have found Mary and her family in the 1881 census spelt Toppin and also 1891 census on both occasions living in king St.  To my dismay James is always absent and I can find no trace of him in any census.  Ann claims she was married in 1881 and widowed in 1891, so he must be somewhere prior to 1881.  Does anyone have any idea where to look or how to search.  Ann it would appear was born in Ireland in 1836.

I always thought James married a Mary Kane, but this is a bit supposition. Maybe Ann was Mary's second name and she went by this.  I have found a marriage on FreeBMD between a James Toppin and Mary Ann Massey Cockermouth 1871 but there is no way to know if this is them, except the names bear up!!

Lastly whilst looking for James in 1851 I found a family all born in Ireland, James born 1831 and living in Crosscanonby, Sub district Workington, so James' birth date and the place and the irish link add up.  Does anyone have any idea how i can cross reference to be sure of the link.  Irritatingly I can find none of the family prior to 1851 (they probably came to England between 1841 and 1851) but more strangely none of them after 1851.  Where could they have gone? Surely not all back to Ireland after so few years. I've tried all combinations of spelling and i'm baffled Can anyone help???

Sam
