Yorkshire (West Riding) / eloping to Rotherham, 1800s
« on: Saturday 14 October 17 22:28 BST (UK)  »
I'd like to know if anyone has heard of Rotherham being an easy place to get married in the early 1800s, with not too many questions being asked. My 4x great-grandmother ran away to get married there age 15 around 1808 when the registers were looking a right old mess. No sign of the dear vicar using Hardwicke registers, which had been available since 1784. We don't know if she regretted the marriage, but she was pregnant for the next 27 years and tumbled a reasonable way down the social scale (to my lot!). If anyone knows whether Rotherham has disproportionate number of marriages for its size at the time, or any other indicators of convenience weddings happening there, I'd be interested to hear.

Glamorganshire / I Aberdare you to find this lady!

Eleanor born 1839/40 Dowlais, Merthyr Tydfil is in Aberdare 1871, 1901 but cannot find her in the two census in between!

Her family tree is attached as a picture. The mind boggles with the bewildering number of partners, disappearing kids and husbands.

I have her marriage certificate to Jenkins and her kids' marriage certificates.

Europe / Danish translation

I'm keen to find if this lady had any children or if she mentions her husband or his family. I also wonder about her life and circumstances as she was a divorcee age 70 when this was written. If anyone reads Danish and can add anything that would be great:

I am related to her husband

I have found the Taudevins are related to me.

Thomas Taudevin was a shopkeeper in St Peter Port and he and his wife died 1897/9 in the town.  His will makes no mention of any of his children!!  He leaves everything to his niece Elvira Taudevin who dies about 1912.

His children were:
* Henrietta Elizabeth Taudevin 6 July 1845 born Guernsey
* Ernest Taudevin about 1848, living with mother's cousin Rebecca Buggins in 1871, Hove, and dies 1873 in Queensland
* Francis Taudevin 25 Dec 1855 born Guernsey

Can anyone suggest what happened to either surviving child?!

I combed through the Guernsey marriages on microfilm at Kew finding nothing.  I wonder if Henrietta married William John Rose of Guernsey (they are together from 1891 through 1911).  I didn't check her death record.

I note an orphan cousin took the name Wilson based on a name of someone on the boat while coming out to New Zealand.  Their uncle lived in Tasmania and two aunts married in Adelaide.  Various female family members worked as nursery nurses in England prior to marriage/ emigration.  Sidney Taudevin in Queensland has quite a large family.

All three children are at home in 1861 and none of them in 1871!

The Common Room / A list of unclaimed estates in India
« on: Thursday 13 August 15 00:36 BST (UK)  »
I googled a relative today and found them listed as having Unclaimed Monies from a fairly well-known bank operating in India, Africa and with an office in London, too.

The heir is interested and is going to have a go at corresponding with the Bank and see what cash might be available, all these years (about 30 years) later as a fun retirement project.

I then thought - what about those others of British connection who appear in this list!  Do they have Missing Moneys?

So - have just now put the list of Brits online, with a comment box available for you to add your comments.

I would hope that big fat heirhunting businesses will stay away - as the values are likely to be well under £5000 (guess) so perfect for family historians to work on...

Here's my list: http://www.haine.org.uk/wills/unclaimed.php

Dorset Lookup Requests / The Dibben girls of Sturminster 1800s: 3 missing marriages!
« on: Saturday 06 September 14 12:05 BST (UK)  »
Hello RootsChatters: I believe I have an interesting puzzle for you all.

William and Mary Dibben (married at Ansford, Somerset 1790) had 3 or 4 feisty long-lived daughters that I'd foolishly imagined died young or hooked up with local labourers and dropped off the map. Not at all!

They married EIGHT times and I've found 5 marriages, but three crucial weddings are missing. Who can help?

Issue: -
Mary Dibben born 1790 Henstridge, dies 1870s Guernsey
marriage needed: William Jones, likely from Wales, Lieutenant Marines, later Captain in 4th or 5th regiment of foot
Children born Sussex, Wiltshire, Wales, Plymouth, Dorset, Guernsey from about 1812 to 1830

William Dibben born 1790s, named as W D junior when witnessing Rebecca's 2nd marriage 1823, no further information

Rebecca Dibben born 1794 Tarrant Gunville, d 1865 Brighton
Marriage needed: Mr Cox, issue: Rebecca Cox 1815-1892 born Guernsey
m2 1823 Sturminster Newton PC, Abraham Mackreth of Cockermouth (dies weeks later leaving pregnant widow), builder
m3 1828 (approx) Sturminster Newton PC, John Spragg market gardener of Ringwood, Hampshire. Left will 1837
m4 1844 Sturminster Newton (thanks FamilySearch!), William Spicknell, much younger innkeeper, Ringwood, Hampshire, later of lunatic asylum

Jane Dibben born 1796 Tarrant Gunville, d 1883 Brighton
Marriage needed: John Williams
m2 1834 Bloomsbury London as Jane Dibben spinster of Stur. Newton, Richard Griffiths Welford
Issue by Williams: Jane Elizabeth 1822-30, Ellen 1825-73, John b/d 1826 all baptised and 2 buried at Marlborough Wiltshire
R G Welford was a country solicitor managing estates in Marlborough later called to the Bar as barrister.
In 1841 John Williams is living with the Welfords and dies with them at Northaw Herts about 1844 leaving everything to Jane. Likely he was her former father in law.
Family lore is that Jane's first husband was a soldier

Elizabeth Dibben born 1798 Tarrant Gunville, died 1885 Brighton
m 1820s Sturminster Newton PC (have details), Matthias Dowding widower and has issue. Is visiting sister's family on Guernsey, 1851. Not as interesting as her older siblings. Her elderly father living with her family 1841, and 1851 (though she is away), he dies Ringwood 1852 aged 88.

If anyone can spot the 3 missing marriages do leave a message. Possibly in Wiltshire, though I did think this had been indexed. Guernsey looking now very likely.

These ladies' stories have been hidden awhile so will be nice to air them. Yes, we are aware of the India, Aboriginal, Wembley, Carterets, Tasmanian, Adelaide hills connections among their fascinating issue, it's the missing marriages we need now :)

Granddaughter Jane Elizabeth Jones 1820 married at some point to Giovanni Leone from Naples. Leone's son was Salvator Francis Leone born about 1845 Italy, so this final missing marriage occurred some time after 1845, likely in USA.

Thanks very much.

David

Hi RootsChatters

I've just stumbled on this entry about Ann aka Emma Padfield - looking at the names I was sure she was from Somerset, but I haven't had much luck pinning her down to a particular group.

http://www.oldbaileyonline.org/browse.jsp?div=t18601126-38

She was '23' in 1860 so born about 1837, and sadly looks as if she was charged with the murder of her infant child - W. A. Padfield, alternative surname Bryant after his father Frederick Bryant, who was just 18.

The Bryants turn up no problem in 1861 (mother is Emma Sophia), East India Merchants, but would like to find out who Ann was.

I did have a look at freereg, and found a possible marriage of George Padfield (to Mary Padfield at Coleford 1851) and to Mary Ann Huntley at Bristol 1858.  But it hasn't all 'fallen out' quickly as I wanted.

She can't be the (Mrs) Emma Padfield born about 1838 who married 1871 to Fred March, as this lady was a widow and previously Miss Emma Plummer.  Also that lady is safely at home in 1861 with a newborn son.

It's always surprising to find a murder in the family, and it would be good to know what happened to Ann and who she was.

Kind regards

David W

Cornwall / Where is.... Wheal Crowder (Crowan), 7 acres near Leedstown
« on: Friday 02 March 12 20:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hello
My ancestor's brother Matthew Rodda lived at Wheal Crowder and had 3 cottages and 7acres of land there according to his estate duty papers 1865 (and finally settled 1933).

This is great.  But where is it!?

The excellent Mining in Cornwall database  http://www.cornwallinfocus.co.uk/history/mindbase.php has got plenty listed locally but not this one.  Suspect it was worked in the 1700s and rapidly given up.

For Rodda enthusiasts, I've started a board here to keep track of them, here http://www.haine.org.uk/whatilike/roddaboard.php

A cousin is hopefully coming over from Oz and would be great to show him his ancestral home if anyone can lay hands on old map or old informative book.  If we get really stuck I'll try the Tithe Apportionment maps (IR29) which are a much underused 'extra' census.

Thanks very much.

Dave
