London and Middlesex / Hodson/ Colepepper marriage
« on: Sunday 12 August 12 13:21 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to determine the date of the marriage of my great great grand parents - Edward Hodson born 1841 and Harriet Bridget Colepepper born 1841 Blackfriars London. Their first child [that I have found]  Louisa Ann was born in 1865, so I have been looking at dates from up to 4 years prior  to this until 1871 when she appears as Harriet Briget Hodson on the census. I cannot find Harriet on the 1861 census but have her on every other one - as Colepepper up to 1851 and then as Hodson from 1871 onwards. I have her birth and death entries but cannot find any record of a marriage - having done searches on both her and  Edward. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Somerset / Marie GIBBS, Somerton
« on: Friday 25 March 11 18:12 GMT (UK)  »
I have been researching the parents of Frances George Phillips born in Poplar in 1891. I was lead to believe that his parents were Henry Phillips b: 1859 Liverpool and Anna Marie Huxtable b: 1856 in Somerton, and that Anna Marie's parents were Henry Huxtable [1834-1891] and Mary Anna Gibbs [1833-1869] who were married in Langport in 1854. However - having not been able to find ANY records for an Anna Marie Huxtable for these dates, or a marriage record for her and Henry Phillips, I sent for  Frances George Phillips' birth certificate. This shows that his parents were Henry Phillips - correct as above, and Marie Gibbs.  This suggests that Marie was possibly born to Mary Anna before she was married to Henry Huxtable, thus taking her mother's name [possibly from a previous marriage??]. But I am still . hitting brick walls - I cant find any records of a Marie Gibbs marrying a Henry Phillips. If anyone has ANY information on this part of the family I would be very gratefil. To summarise I am looking fro birth of Marie Gibbs, in Somerton approx 1856, and marriage of same to Henry Phillips.
Many thanks

London and Middlesex / Hodson/ Culpeper marriage
« on: Wednesday 29 December 10 14:58 GMT (UK)  »
My great great grandparents were Edward Hodson [b1841 in Kings Cross London] and Harriet Bridget Culpeper [Colepeper] [b Dec 1841 in Southwark]. I have found the records of their births and their deaths and of all the census returns available, but am drawing a blank on their marriage. I cannot find a record of it anywhere. Their first child according to the 1871 census, Harriet Emily Hodson,  was born in 1866 so presumably it was sometime prior to that. I would be grateful for any help or clues. The Culpepers are a very well recorded family so hopefully someone out there might just know something!

Many thanks

Wiltshire / MERRETT family
« on: Friday 12 November 10 19:52 GMT (UK)  »
I now have people with the surname Merrett [or Merritt]  appearing twice in my family tree - one family based in Wiltshire [of which there are records aplenty] and the other in London.  There is some sketchy evidence that the two sets MIGHT  be related, but I have nothing concrete. Does anyone have ANY knowledge of a "Merrett" that moved from Wiltshire to London or North Kent?  I am talking about early 1700's , so although there are some census returns that show some Merretts born in WIltshire living in London, or visiting family members, I am really looking for more personal knowledge or earlier family members that doesnt show up in any of the later records. In particular I am looking for ancestors of Elizabeth Merret [born 1847 in Bethnal Green] - mother called Margaret and father Henry.
Many thanks in advance for any help thrown my way.

Scotland / Mary BRINING b. 1843
« on: Saturday 19 June 10 10:21 BST (UK)  »
I am currently researching the family of Thomas Dawson who was born in Halifax 1842. On the census returns for 1871/81/91 his wife is listed as Mary born in Scotland in approx 1843. I have now got her maiden name as BRINING . By 1851 she was living with her grandparents James and Betty Brining in Bradford, England, and in 1861 she was living with her aunt Mary Mansfield, in Yorkshire, and again on both of these census returns she was listed as having been born in Scotland. However - I have NO idea who her parents were or what had happened to them - presumably if she was   living with her relations she may have been orphaned. If anyone has any ideas or is researcing the Brining family, I would be grateful for any information that you may be willing to share.
Many thanks

London and Middlesex / MERRETT of London
« on: Friday 16 April 10 08:20 BST (UK)  »
I am currently researching the family of Elizabeth Merrett and am stuck! Elizabeth is on the census returns for 1871/81/91 as the wife  of John Price. However, they did not actually marry until 25th Sept 1894, and she died just over a year later. The 1891 census shows her mother living with them - named as Margaret Merritt born in the city of London , aged 68 [therefore born approx 1823] . The marriage certificate shows her father's name as Henry Merrett[deceased] formerly a [what looks like] cat man which I am presuming to be Cartman or coachman. Obviously there is a slight discrepancy in the spelling as to whether it is MerrEtt or MerrItt. I have done searches for both versions and can find no records of Margaret, Henry and daughter Elizabeth together as a family, or of Margaret and Henry as individuals. All help VERY gratelfully received.

Thanks

Kent Completed Lookup Requests / Wife of Thomas GLOVER of Trottiscliffe
« on: Monday 15 March 10 07:14 GMT (UK)  »
Having discovered a grave marked with the name of Ann Glover [no date of birth or other family information on it] in Trottiscliffe churchyard, I have managed to connect her as being the wife of Thomas Glover. What I can't find out is her maiden name, as at the time of marrying Thomas, she had already been married. If anyone can help I would be very grateful.
This is what I have on her already:

Ann/ Annie ? born 1833/ or 1835 [depending on which census entry you take] in Wateringbury, Kent

Married to Edward Wells - first child born in 1853

Married Thomas Glover in  1877 -  bmd shows marriage of Thomas Glover to Ann Wells  [ one of her children shows up as a step child of Thomas's on the 1881 census, so this confirms that she was previously married to Edward Wells]

Died March 11th 1917.

So - I need her surname at birth to complete the picture. All help gratefully received

Kent / William John GLOVER of Hollingbourne
« on: Saturday 13 March 10 16:56 GMT (UK)  »
I have a William John Glover in my tree - born 1859 and died in Jan 1935. He is buried in Hollingbourne churchyard with his wife Hester [Waghorn] who I previously knew about. However, also in the churchyard is the grave of his first wife Amy Maria Glover - died 9th Sept 1889. I know nothing about her except for the fact that I have now discovered that they married in April, May, June quarter of 1885 [ at least there is an entry for William John then  - ref Hollingbourne 2a page1045] However, the name of his spouse is not listed so I have no maiden name for Amy Maria. Can anyone help please?

Kent / Cornelius GLOVER 1871
« on: Saturday 24 October 09 12:34 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find out where the family of Cornelius Glover were at the time of the 1871 census. I have the census entries for 1861, and 1881, but cannot find them anywhere in 1871. Family members at that time were as follows:

Cornelius Glover b:1830
wife Mary Ann
children
Charles b:1857
Annie b: 1860
Emma Elizabeth b: 1862
Alice Kate b:1864
Walter Robert b:1866
Elizabeth b:1868
Ada Grace b:1870

In 1861 they were living in Gillingham, and by 1881 they were in Chatham, but any clues as to where they were in between would be gratefully accepted.
Many thanks
Lisa
