Northamptonshire / Thorp Road Gaol - Peterborough
« on: Monday 28 January 08 21:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all,

I've found an ancestor who is listed in the 1851 Census as a prisoner in Thorp Road Gaol in Peterborough.

Bit of a first this for me - anyone know any information about the place or where i might find some records (or whether they even exist).

thanks!

I'm looking to find out a bit more about an Emma GREEN born circa 1849 in Wimblington, Cambs.

She appears in the following Censi:
1851 Age 2 with her mother and grandparents
1861 Age 12 with grandparents
1871 Age 22 with her step-father, mother and half sister (shown as Daughter-in-law)
1881 Age 32 as a widow, with her half-sister and her husband.

The mother was an Eliza GREEN who went on to marry Martin PARKINSON, when Emma was about 11.
Their daughter is Eliza PARKINSON.

The oddity (that i'm trying to close out) is that Emma GREEN marries George Mann RYDER in 1876 - the marriage is registered under Emma LENDRUM. I can't find a previous marriage for Emma between 1871-1876 so i'm wondering if LENDRUM is her alleged fathers name? It is a prevalent surname in the area.

George died shortly before the 1881 census.

Of further interest (to me, anyway) is that Eliza PARKINSON got married very young - approx 17 - not unheard of but unusual in that family ... and the marriage was in Newmarket rather than that of her family.

Anything of interest appreciated ....

Lanarkshire / 1901 Glasgow look up - HAWLETT
« on: Thursday 28 July 05 10:47 BST (UK)  »
My first foray into Scotland so to speak ....

I'm looking for Mary Ellen HAWLETT born circa 1894 in Glasgow. Possible variations to names are May and Hewlett.

She married in Canada in 1914 (transcribed as May HAWLETT).

I have found details of a May Howlett who went to Canada as an orphan on board the Empress of Britain in 1913. She would tie with a May Hewlett born in Croydon however.

The Glasgow reference comes from a good source but i'd like to establish that it is correct ......

Completed Huntingdonshire Look ups / 1851 Census Look Up - BARLOW - Somersham
« on: Friday 10 June 05 14:10 BST (UK)  »
Hello again.

trying to tie in a Charles BARLOW born Somersham c.1844.

Hopefully he will be living with
William BARLOW (b 1824)
Jane BARLOW (b 1826)
Charles BARLOW (b 1850)
Blanche BARLOW (b 1851)

There should be two Charles's as the 1844 version gives Jane as his Step Mother in the 1901 Census.

If he isn't there i'd be grateful if someone could locate who he's living with - the next bet would be

John BARLOW (b 1814)
Harriett BARLOW (b 1821)
Who i originally believed him to be the son of. Could be that he was illegitimate (William & Jane married in 1848) hence the confusion.
