Hi everyone - just wondering if anyone can look up a marriage in Snodland Kent - the FHL Film Number:   992535 - date is 22 September 1836 - parties are John Hadlow and Ann Wells.

Just after any additional information that might be gleaned about my forebears - witnesses, parent's names whether they were of the parish or even ages would be terrific. Thanks so much!

Regards

United States of America / Colonel Arthur S Bell - WW1 and WW2 in the Pacific
« on: Sunday 02 February 20 01:24 GMT (UK)  »
I have a collection of photographs from Colonel Arthur S Bell which were sent to my grandfather by him after WW2. They must have become friends as both were in New Guinea during WW2. I don't particularly need them and would love to return them to his family if possible. I did contact a lady via FamilySearch who had put his details on the site but she is a distant relative and wasn't interested in the photos.

My limited results on Google tell me that he fought in both WW1 and WW2. One photo shows him with two friends from WW1 that I know of - Major General Henry G. Nutton (or Nulton) and Alex Campbell.
Colonel Bell was in the 29th Division.

Colonel Bell also fought in WW2 and was in New Guinea in the Pacific. He became a Sherriff and a Prison Warden after WW2. He was in Union County, Elizabeth, New Jersey in the early 1950s. The address on the envelope gives an address of Paul's Cross Roads, Essex County, Virginia.

If I can't find a relative - do you think the US National Archives would be interested in the photographs at all ?

Grateful for any advice.

Kind regards
Megan

Canada / William Normoyle and Ruby Agnes Chester
« on: Wednesday 19 January 11 14:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I am trying to trace the following couple. (My great uncle and his wife).

William Normoyle born 29 May 1890 born Menangle, NSW Australia to Thomas Normoyle and Ada Ellen Creighton.

He and his wife Ruby Agnes visted Australia in 1926. According to the information on the ship's Passenger list he had previously been in Canada in 1918 and was in the Canadian Army.
His occupation is given as a Motor Engineer and the address they were returning to was 124 Hastings W. Vancouver.

Ruby Agnes Normoyle (nee Chester) was born in England in 1895 to David Chester and Louisa Emma Clamp. It would appear she originally went to Seattle Washington but later moved to Canada.
Both their deaths are registered in British Columbia - his in 1959 and hers in 1969.

I have been unable to find any marriage record for them - so would appreciate a look up if possible.
Also I would like to know whether someone can advise me as to following up Canadian Army records to see his service record if at all possible.

I believe William may have originally gone to the US (that was the family story) as I have found a 1920 census entry which fits for him and he would appear to also have had a wife called Nora M (original surname not known).  According to that he had been in the US since 1916. If this is correct I would assume he was a widower when he married Ruby but clearly he was not in Canada in 1918.

As far as I can tell William and Ruby did not have any children. I should mention that he was raised as a Roman Catholic but she was Church of England.

Any assistance or advice on next steps from a Canadian expert would be much appreciated!

Kind regards
Megan

Kent / Social History - movements between Kent and Sussex
« on: Wednesday 01 December 10 02:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

This is a general question of sorts - does anyone know what social history impacts may account for movements from Kent to Sussex in the 1830s and 1840s?
I know the development of the railway and the growth of Hastings as a Victorian seaside town in the later periods would have contributed to movements but was there anything earlier?

The area I am particularly interested in is around Ebony, Stone, Appledore, Thanet,  Isle of Oxley. The areas in Sussex are largely around Hastings, Willingdon and Westham.

I know Stone was originally a port and that the town was moved to Reading Street at some point - but does anyone know when that occurred and if that is one of the impacts?

The reason I ask is because I am primarily interested in Petitts (various spellings) and Climpsons - but in browsing census images I see Pipers, Elphicks, Burtons and others in both datasets. I haven't made a great longitudinal study to see if they are the same people but find it curious and wonder whether neighbours moved together.

Interested whether anyone knows of any indepth research/social history of the places and time periods concerned?

The Common Room / Chelsea Pensioner Lookups
« on: Wednesday 17 November 10 01:58 GMT (UK)  »
Not sure where to post this but thought here might be a place to start.
If anyone has access to Chelsea Pensioner records - I am looking for a Thomas Pettet (Petitt/Pettett and all the various spelling you can think of!) born about 1828 in Stone, Kent.
He was a Chelsea Pensioner and died 15 Jan 1894 in Brighton Sussex. I think he was a "living out" pensioner (i.e. not in the hospital).

It is my understanding that Chelsea Pensioners had to have seen active service. He is in the 1871 Census aged 42 and described as a Chelsea Pensioner from then on. I am thinking that he would most likely have been sent to the Crimea given the time period but confirmation of where he saw active service and whether he was married during that period would be of great interest.

Kind regards

Lincolnshire / W Audas Photographers at Grimsby
« on: Saturday 22 August 09 09:34 BST (UK)  »
I have a photograph from W Audas in Grimsby. It is of my great great grandparents - I would guess (by their ages and clothing) that it was taken around 1880.
I am curious to know whether the photographs taken were ever archived somewhere in Lincolnshire - does anyone know?

Thanks

Dorset Lookup Requests / Marriage Lookup Clarke and Climpson 1915
« on: Monday 17 August 09 13:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I have found a record in FreeBDM - George William Climpson married Mary E Clarke in the Jan-Mar quarter of 1915 at Weymouth in Dorset Vol 5a p560.
Not sure if it is possible to look up further detail.

George William Climpson was born 8/8/1886 at March Cambridgeshire. He emigrated to Australia circ 1912-1914 and was unmarried at that time.

Enlisted in WW1 from Australia in the Northamptonshire Regiment #7584 Private G W Climpson reported for duty 31/8/1914 was single. Mother Mrs E. Climpson next of kin  Post Office Coffs Harbour, NSW. Embarked on 17.10.1914 on "Miltiades". Had a 5' per day pay alloted 3/6d to mother.

George also enlisted for WW2
CLIMPSON GEORGE WILLIAM : Service Number - N107645 : Date of birth - 08 Aug 1886 : Place of birth - MARCH ENGLAND : Place of enlistment - PADDINGTON NSW : Next of Kin - CLIMPSON MARY

(He did not have any blood relatives called Mary so assume Mary was his wife - however no record of any marriage in Australia. I am thinking he possibly married in England after being de-mob. and brought his wife back with him)

In the 1930 list of Australian Electoral Roles for Division of Reid, Granville there are
George William Climpson 175 Clyde Street Granville, coal lumper
Mary Emma Climpson 175 Clyde Street Granville, home duties
There is a death registered in 1968 in NSW for a Mary Emma Climpson her father's name is given as Enock (sic) and her mother as Emma Northmore. So am trying to confirm whether marriage record mentioned above is the correct one. George died in 1965 in Sydney AUstralia
