Surrey / Avedis, 1 Carfax
« on: Monday 16 November 15 22:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
Is anyone familiar with the Farnham (probably Ash or Tongham) area of Surrey? According to the electoral roll, Sidney Richard BADHAM and his wife Eva Dinah BADHAM were living at "Avedis, 1 Carfax" at the time of the 1937 and 1938 electoral registers. I'd like to know exactly where that address is please.
Thanks in advance for any help,
Judith

Surrey / A J HARMSWORTH and the Basingstoke Canal
« on: Monday 30 May 11 16:06 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find out more about Alexander John HARMSWORTH, who owned the Basingstoke Canal from 1923 to 1937. His daughter Ivy Gladys married Charles Frederick DEEDMAN, a distant relative of mine. I'd be really grateful if anyone can give me any information about Alexander and his link to the canal - many thanks.

London and Middlesex / White family of Whitechapel
« on: Sunday 09 May 10 14:14 BST (UK)  »
I'm hoping to make contact with anyone with a link to William White (born 1809 Wotton Underwood, Bucks) and Mary Ann nee Cobden (born 1812 Singleton, Sussex).
They married on 28 Jan 1834 at St Mary le Bow, City of London and lived in the Whitechapel area including in Leman Street and Church Lane.
William was a tailor and, for a time, sexton of St Mary's Whitechapel.
They had the following children:
William Joseph who married Mary Ann Moore
John Cobden White who married Susannah Newton
Mark
Walter Henry (died aged 2)
Edwin (died aged about 8 months)
Rose Hannah who married Charles Treweek
Walter Edwin who married Agnes Ann Timms
Mary Ann
Ann Eliza who married John Russell
Benjamin
Jane Charlotte who married John Gooding
Edward Samuel who married Susannah Newton
Ruth Emily who maried Alfred Murrell

I have information on William's Bucks ancestry dating back to 1752, and would like to exchange it for information on his descendents. Thanks,
Judith

London and Middlesex / GILLSON family of Artillery Row, Westminster
« on: Saturday 20 March 10 17:43 GMT (UK)  »
I’m looking for connections to John and Jane Gillson of Artillery Row, Westminster.

I have the birth certificate of John’s son William Gillson, who was born on 6 Feb 1859 in 2 Artillery Row, Westminster. John was a butcher journeyman, and his wife was Jane formerly Beazley.

The 1861 census shows John’s son William living with his grandparents (presumably John’s parents) at 36 Artillery Row, Westminster. The details are:
William Gillson    Head 48 Labourer born St George’s Hanover Sq
Ellen       Wife 54 born Middx St Pancras
Walter       Son 24 Scholar born Middx St Geo Hanover Sq
Eliza      Daur 26 Servant born Middx St Geo Hanover Sq
Emma      Daur 16 born Middx St Geo Hanover Sq
William      Grandson 2 born St Jno Westm
George      Grandson 7 mo born St Jno Westm
John Smith   (no relationship shown) 16 Messenger born St Jno Westm

I can’t find John and Jane in the 1861 census. I’ve tried searching all 39 images for 2 Artillery Row, where William was born, but I can’t find number 2. I can’t find John in the 1851 or 1841 censuses either, nor his birth or baptism, nor a marriage to Jane, nor any likely deaths for either of them.

I’ve found a William Gillson (John’s father?) aged 25 in the 1841 census, in St George Hanover Square, along with Eliza (30), Eliza (6) and Jane (4), but the image is barely readable. If this is the William who was 48 in 1861, he has a different wife. I can’t find this William (John’s father) in the 1851 census.

John’s son William married Mary Ann Lucas on 14 Oct 1884 in the Parish Church, Leyton. William was a Sea Man. His father John’s occupation was shown as a Shop Keeper. The marriage certificate doesn’t show John as ‘deceased’. Both witnesses were from the Lucas side of the family.

I’ve found Mary Ann Gillson, William’s wife, in 1891 along with 2 year old daughter Jane, but William’s name has been crossed out – perhaps he was at sea? I’ve found William and Mary Ann in 1901 – his occupation was ‘Sailor Seas’. I haven’t got them in 1911.

I’d be pleased to hear from anyone who has a link to this family.

Surrey / William Culverhouse and Hannah nee Jones
« on: Monday 01 February 10 14:44 GMT (UK)  »
My 2 times great grandparents were William Culverhouse and Hannah nee Jones. They married at St Mary Islington on 29 Apr 1835. They had 9 children, mostly born in Islington, including Alfred, my great grandfather. By 1871, they had moved to Lambeth.
Does anyone have a link to this couple? Thanks,
Judith
