Shetland / Moffat Burgess help please!
« on: Wednesday 16 February 11 12:13 GMT (UK)  »
Could someone please help me get out of a rut I find myself in. The rut is my great grandfather
John Moffat, shown as 'seaman merchant service' in my grandmother's death cert dated 1946
and since her age is shown as 83, I calculate that his birth date would be about 1843. Since
his wife Helen Burgess was born 1842 this matches up. I would like to find him in a census a
marriage cert or a birth cert, if possible, all three. I would  be very grateful for any help any
one can give me.    John

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / army once more (completed many thanks)
« on: Thursday 04 November 10 20:54 GMT (UK)  »
on the back of this photo is written 'stirling castle c 1870'it is
of my great grandfather, his wife and my grandfather in the back row,
but I would really like to know the names of the two babies. I cannot
find them in the 1871 census, and would be very grateful if someone
could tell me a little about the soldier, his rank, medals and uniform,
I think the jacket must be scarlet. His marriage cert 1860 says he is a
private in the 71st regt of foot. I have read that they evolved into
the 'highland light infantry'during ww2.Its great to learn a bit about
our ancestors, what they did and how they lived and hope that we
havent done too much damage after all!

Could someone please confirm the marriage of samuel parker and mary grieve.
I believe it was in Hawick, Roxburghshire in 1846/47. I am trying to find samuels
parents so that I can find out more about where he came from and who he is related
to. I have managed to find him and his family after that date, so that part is ok.
Thnks for your help in the past. John.

Ireland / Further to " missing Hughs"
« on: Sunday 23 August 09 15:03 BST (UK)  »
Further to  "missing Hughs"      my original post -   www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,398726.0.html.      I have been trying to find the following certs in Scotland but have been advised to try the General Ireland board  to discover if I should be searching in Ireland . Can you help please?  I am trying to find a birth cert for Hugh Monaghan (or Moughan). His marriage cert (Church of Scotland)  in 1885 shows him as 30 and married to Margaret Parker age 25. His parents are James Monaghan, farmer and Mary Macgourlick (name confirmed by Scotlands People) both deceased  -  nor can I find a marriage cert for them.  frustrated!  John.
