Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Daughter matches but her mother does not
« on: Sunday 10 March 24 11:58 GMT (UK)  »
I have a new match on Anc (CD) at 32cm x 2 segments longest 21cM. Looking at our shared matches I can see my 1st cousin twice removed (FC) who I match at 139cM x 8 segments. Her mother (1st cousin once removed) who I match at 386cm x 16 segments is not on my shared match list with CD. Is a connection between FC and CD via her paternal line the only explanation for this or are there other possibilities?

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Ancestry USA Extra Tools
« on: Wednesday 27 December 23 10:08 GMT (UK)  »
Peter Calver of Lost Cousins recently drew my attention to a DNA-only subscription on Ancestry. It is well hidden from sight but I eventually tracked it down. Details at
https://support.ancestry.com/s/article/AncestryDNA-Plus-Membership?language=en_US

It seems to be available by invitation only. You cannot subscribe at the moment so fee unknown. Has anyone here been invited?

While searching for it I saw that Ancestry.com also offer Pro Tools at $9.99/month for building trees for their American customers.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Radio 4 Series
« on: Wednesday 13 September 23 11:58 BST (UK)  »
A new series of six thirty minute episodes called "The Gift" started last Monday evening on Radio 4 Sounds. Each episode looks at different consequences of individuals receiving a DNA test kit as a gift. Monday's episode (still available on catch-up) was titled "Fraud" and investigated three cases where their bio fathers turned out not to be sperm donors but men whose sperm samples was used without their consent by the fertility clinic they were attending. This was all before regulations came into effect in 1990's. All six episodes look fascinating. Sheds a light on "The Christmas Effect".

Apologies. Just seen the post by Gadget covering same series. Can't see a way of deleting this one.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Ancestry Assignment to Both Sides
« on: Wednesday 16 August 23 09:31 BST (UK)  »
Ancestry originally assigned two of my matches to both sides. I last checked about two months ago and it was still only two matches. Checked this morning and they have now assigned 78 to both sides. Has anyone else noticed a sharp increase in assignment to both sides? If so, do you think the asssignments are largely correct? I have reservations about mine. Gedmatch suggests my parents were not related. Of the 78 now assigned to both sides, some I know are on my paternal side and some are on my maternal side. Seems unlikely to me.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Ancestry no match but MyHeritage 21cm
« on: Wednesday 05 July 23 15:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I have a match AN on MyHeritage at 21cm x 1 segment. Top of our Relatives in Common list is AM who I contacted some time ago and identified our MRCA from our two trees using genealogy records. AN matches AM at 39.8cM and MH indicates our match is triangulated.

I and AN have taken Ancestry DNA tests and uploaded to MH. The puzzle is that we have a “No Match” on Ancestry. Does that mean that Timber has stripped 14cM of matching DNA so that our match is below the 8cM minimum?

Also, given the level of match between AN and AM is it likely that the “No Match” on Ancestry is wrong? At this early stage I and AN have not yet been able to identify MRCA from our trees.

TIA

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / How Does 23andMe Search Work
« on: Wednesday 21 September 22 09:31 BST (UK)  »
I searched my DNA match list on 23andMe using the surname of an individual on my match list. It came up, as expected, with two individuals who have that surname but also three others whose names do not match my search name nor are remotely similar. I am wondering if these three appear on the tree automatically created by 23andMe for my match. They do not appear on my "automatic" tree.

Anybody know how the search on 23andMe works?

Scotland / Search Options in SP Changed?
« on: Wednesday 23 February 22 12:25 GMT (UK)  »
Am I losing the plot or have the search options on SP for BMD changed. There are now only four options - exact, wild card allowed, Names that begin with, and phonetic matching. I now cannot remember how many there used to be but fuzzy matching is no longer available.

I was using the site on Monday so think that the change is since then. Looked at news on home page but no mention of a change there.

Can anyone confirm the change and remember the original options.

United States of America / US SSDI Record
« on: Wednesday 22 December 21 11:37 GMT (UK)  »
I am hoping someone can solve a puzzle around a US Social Security Death Index record. I have read Ancestry notes on SSDI but have little experience with US records.

My wife had a relative who emigrated from Glasgow to Ohio, USA in early 1960's.
We believe he died in Glasgow as his death is registered in Glasgow.
His death is recorded in US SSDI on Ancestry and includes the following
Issue Date: 1964
Issue State: Ohio
Last Residence: 800 (US Consulate) London, UK
Death Date: dd, mmm, 2007
I assume the issue date would be the year he emigrated but I cannot understand the Last Residence reference to US Consulate, London. Is this just because he returned to UK or does it suggest he actually stayed there?
