Moray (Elginshire) / Janet CALLUM or GRANT
« on: Monday 22 June 20 16:12 BST (UK)  »
I have a Robert Callum Smith, born 1795 in Forres.  Parents shown as Alexander Smith (1752-1837 - his father was John) and Janet Grant or Callum (c.1761-1831).

I'm trying to trace the mother's line. Scotland's People shows a Janet Grant baptised Oct. 1761 with Father Donald Grant.  There is also a Janet Callum shown as baptised Sept. 1760 with father Donald Callum.

Robert had 5 siblings - John, Alexander, James, Christian and Jessie (no Donald?). Mother used Grant on John, James and Christian's birth registration.  Used Callum for Alexander's and Grant or Callum for Jessie and Robert's.  I've verified this on Moray Libindex and Scotland's People.  Any ideas how to go further back as I'm hesitant to pursue Donald Grant or Donald Callum.  I haven't tried to track the siblings to see if they had any sons called Donald.  Any other ideas?

Help would be appreciated.

Moray (Elginshire) / Ships Captains/Ship Masters
« on: Friday 19 July 19 17:28 BST (UK)  »
I have several ancestors listed as Ship Captains and Ship Masters in the Banff and Moray areas in the 1800's.  Does anyone know how I could find out which ships they served on and where they sailed to?  I know the son of one of them (Forbes Smith) was a seaman and died at 24 in 1871 in Taganrog, Russia of Cholera.  His family was from Kinloss, Moray.  The father died at sea in 1854.
Moray Libindex gave me lots of information but no mention of ships names or destinations.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Sligo / CRYAN FAMILY
« on: Saturday 07 April 18 16:36 BST (UK)  »
Have just found out my great great grandfather JAMES CRYAN, (1814-1877) Master Cooper, was born in Sligo. He married Mary Neilson (1817-1898). I know he died in Sligo after which his wife and two daughters moved to Scotland.  Daughter Sarah (born 1836 or 1842) and daughter Winifred (1857-1886).  I have the history in Scotland but would be interested in finding out anything about the Irish part.  I don't know if there were other children.  With large gap between two daughters' birthdates it seems likely there were more.

Does anyone have information on this family please?

Argyllshire / Islay Ancestors
« on: Wednesday 04 April 18 16:00 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know how I could find records of ancestors from Islay moving to Canada in the mid 1800's.  Would there be any immigration records in Scotland that far back?

Any help would be appreciated.

Renfrewshire / Anyone Visiting Greenock Cemetery?
« on: Friday 26 September 14 12:37 BST (UK)  »
My great grandfather and his brother are buried in Lair 212, Section 2N, Greenock Cemetery.  Names are John and Duncan McIntyre.  I wanted to know if there is a headstone and wrote to the office there but they didn't answer.  I have a map and it seems to be in the Forsyth Street Gate area. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Genetrix

Technical Help / Viewer Applets
« on: Thursday 17 July 14 15:16 BST (UK)  »
I use the Scotland's People website a lot and have been using the JAVA viewer.  This morning I got a pop-up message saying my JAVA was out of date and to download the latest version.  I did this with no problems until I tried viewing one of my previous searches when a box popped up asking if I wanted to run ViewONE (I don't know what this is) but at the bottom it had a warning saying "running this application may put your computer and personal information at risk".  I obviously don't want that to happen, so declined, but on closing the window I still couldn't view the page I wanted.  Scotland's People say the viewer has nothing to do with them and that I could use a different one.  Any advice would be welcome.

The Common Room / Mitchell Library Glasgow
« on: Wednesday 25 June 14 13:24 BST (UK)  »
I'm hoping to visit the Mitchell Library in Glasgow in October.  Will I be able to see a birth certificate from 1950 or will the 100 year rule still apply?  I need to find out who the parents are.

Many thanks for your help

The Common Room / Mitchell Library vs Register House
« on: Sunday 13 April 14 11:43 BST (UK)  »
I'm planning a visit to Glasgow and Edinburgh later this year.  Does Register House in Edinburgh have more records than the Mitchell Library in Glasgow? Due to time constraints, is it necessary that I visit both places and, if not, which do you think would be best?

Your advice would be appreciated.

The Common Room / Family Search Problem
« on: Sunday 15 December 13 13:45 GMT (UK)  »
Anyone having a problem with Family Search website?  None of the links seem to work for me.  I keep getting a message "Oops... we can't seem to find the page you're looking for".  Doesn't matter what information I enter I keep getting the same error message.  I've notified them twice but they haven't responded.
