Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Brick Wall due to marriage not with GRO
« on: Thursday 25 April 24 09:19 BST (UK)  »
Hi I recently built my existing family tree on familysearch and the fan chart is excellent as it is printable and quickly shows where the gaps in your research are...

One such gap and brick wall that has been bugging me for years is that I cannot find the marriage of my GGG grandparents and so don't know their fathers names to go back further. They are William John b1815-1820 of St Dogmells, Pembrokeshire and Ann(e) Griffiths b1823-1826 of either of Tremain or Blaenporth, Cardiganshire. They appear to have had their first child in 1846 so should be married by then but I just cant find it. Any help greatly appreciated in filling in the hole in my tree.

Thanks

Antrim / Finding death date, or graves of my GG Grandparents in Malone
« on: Wednesday 24 April 24 17:30 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

Just wondering if anyone can help. I have recently re created my tree on familysearch as the fan chart is so good and it shows any gaps in information so well. One gap is the birth and death dates of my GG Grandparents in Malone, Belfast. Their names are Robert Walker born around 1876 and Sarah Philpot born around 1877. In particular I would like to know where their grave might be. They were married in St
John's church so I'm guessing they could be in there. Are there any inscriptions to be had anywhere online? I'm quite far away and have young children so a visit wont happen for quite some time unfortunately.

Thanks

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / How to access Portsmouth St Mary parish registers
« on: Saturday 04 November 23 11:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hi I usually like to find the specific entry of a baptism, marriage etc for my records, but in the usual website I cannot seem to locate what I want? I'm guessing the registers for this parish are not available. Does anyone know why?

Thanks

London and Middlesex / Help please - bit stuck, Islington birth or censuses
« on: Monday 26 December 22 16:07 GMT (UK)  »
My GG Grandfather John Howard was born Islington 18th July 1874.

In 1900 he weds his wife Emily Banks in Portsea (Portsmouth) at age 25 and gives his fathers name as John Howard a Shoe Maker.
In 1901 he is 26, a Stoker in the Royal Navy and born Islington. Lives with wife Emily S aged 24 in Portsmouth.
In 1911 he is not present with Emily and family in Portsmouth as he is presumably at sea
In 1939 he is at Havant and Waterloo with his wife Emily S Howard

Now I have tried finding him in 1891 and 1881 with his father but they are proving elusive. I wonder if anyone with better search skills than I can uncover something, or anything really?

Many thanks 8)

Antrim / William Johnstone of Belfast but born Armagh c.1877
« on: Sunday 20 February 22 17:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hi this is the only line of my family tree which I am stuck with. My G-G-Grandfather was William Johnston who spent his adult life in Belfast and raised his family there. He wed in 1900 in Belfast and lived there for the 1901 and 1911 censuses with his wife and children. In the censuses he gives his birthplace as Co Armagh but I cannot locate his birth. In his wedding cert he gives his father as John Johnston a 'Feuter' or 'Leuter' = I've probably misunderstood the handwriting so have attached a snip of it

Any help appreciated

Thanks

Other Countries / Ancestor from Malta born 1850's
« on: Wednesday 04 August 21 23:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

It appears that my GGG Grandmother, known in the Census's as Mary, was born in Malta around 1854. She and my GGG Grandfather William Banks (who is considerably older!) were in Portsea 1881, 1891, 1901 with their children. She gives herself as a Naturalised British Subject and also their daughter Mary Banks gives herself as born in Malta about 1873.

Working backwards, I then bought my GG Grandmoths birth certificate to find Mary's surname pre marriage and it is given in 1876 as 'Mary Banks formerley Humphries' (not very Maltese)!

So i wonder how i can get further info on her? Naturalisation? Change of name to Humphries? Malta archives or similar?

Despite William stating he was born in Brighton I cannot find any record of him pre his daughters 1876 birth cert above, guessing he might have been in Malta too?

Any help appreciated :)
