Essex / Sketch of knight & dog, Little Chesterford PRs, burials, drawn 1754
« on: Tuesday 20 September 16 20:09 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone shed light on this? It was in the parish registers, at the beginning of the burials section for Little Chesterford. In the upper right is George Ledghan (?), Esqr. Is it a sketch of an effigy on top of a tomb, perhaps, with the loyal dog at his feet? Bottom right has the artist's initials and the date 1754.

Thanks, Judy

Hello

Marriages list "y.m." for men and "y.d." for women. Any idea what these mean?

Thanks in advance,

Somerset / Halse burial records--"Effects"?
« on: Tuesday 02 December 14 04:44 GMT (UK)  »
Has anyone seen the word "Effects" written in burial registers? What might that mean? It shows up on several entries in the early 1800s.

Thanks

Dorset Lookup Requests / Portland Dorset PAINTER missing years?
« on: Sunday 31 August 14 21:58 BST (UK)  »
I've been trawling the PR images at ancestry.com for Portland Dorset. It appears that there's a gap between about 1612 and 1694 or so. The years change in the middle of a page. My question is this: are there other parish registers for Portland that include those missing years? The family of interest is PAINTER.

Thanks for any help on this

Longford / Lookup request BURKE/QUINN Willsbrooke, Longford
« on: Saturday 08 February 14 05:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

I've found civil records at Ancestry for 4 children born to Patrick BURKE and Alice QUINN in Willsbrooke or Granard, county Longford. I'm looking for their marriage (about 1876), or their births (about 1855). The 4 children were born 1876 to 1885; their 5th child was born in NY in 1888.

Can anyone help?

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / BUTTLE Joan Eileen 1919 Edmonton All Saints
« on: Saturday 30 November 13 20:19 GMT (UK)  »
Are baptism records available for 1919 in Edmonton All Saints? If so, I'd really appreciate a lookup for Joan Eileen BUTTLE, born about 1919 (BMD). Mother was Edith Jane BUTTLE. I'm hoping the baptism listed the father's name. We've looked at the birth certificate already.

Thanks in advance,

Judy

Travelling People / History of Romani/Catalan around Petworth Sussex?
« on: Wednesday 06 November 13 00:35 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help with the likelihood that a family named Hearsey from the area of Petworth Sussex might be of Romani or Catalan background? Stories from two branches of the family indicate gypsy and/or Spanish ancestry, and this seems to be the most likely line. The family was fairly well settled by 1795, when James Hearsey, a coachman, was married in St James Westminster, so gypsy roots would have been in the early 1700s, most likely. We think he was baptized 1769 in Petworth to George Hearsey and Elizabeth Randall.

Any wisdom from the group?

Thanks,

Judy

Sussex / Worthing Sussex: DUTTON marriage & baptisms
« on: Wednesday 09 October 13 19:33 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I've had no luck finding records for Worthing online, so maybe they don't exist. But, perhaps the rootschat wizards have a way. Looking for a marriage of Richard DUTTON, who was born about 1795 in St Bololph Aldgate, around 1830 probably to a Worthing girl. There would be baptisms for Louisa 1831, Elizabeth 1833, and possibly Mary 1835.

Armed Forces / Late Victorian soldier uniform--help to identify
« on: Tuesday 03 September 13 17:12 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help with the identity of this uniform? Suggestions include the Queen's Royal West Surrey Regiment (lamb and flag) or the Royal Marines Light Infantry. Probably Boer War?
