Worcestershire / Anyone recognise this house in Malvern Wells?
« on: Saturday 24 July 10 23:18 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,
basically this is a photo I found at a relatives house, says ormonde cottage beneath the photo as you can see. Been trying to find where the house is situated for ages.
on 1911 census an ormonde cottage is to be found in malvern wells with a wood family living in it (same as mine)
So do any locals recognise it?

Hope someone can help.
Kind regards, Nick.

Armed Forces / Silver War Badge query
« on: Saturday 07 November 09 12:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everyone,
I found this medal index for a Frank R Towell, I think he is one of my great great uncles. On the card it says 'as Rupert Frank' at the side. I know that his middle name began with R and I have found a boer war roll with his name on listed as 'Reuben Frank'. I wondered if they had got the two names mixed up as they sound similar. Also the fact he had fought in the boer war could explain why he was a sergeant. He was also from Devon, hence devonshire regt.

As you can see there is a silver war badge entry listed, presumably wounded whilst in the south staffordshire regt. Is there any way that I can look into this entry to see if it actually is the Frank Towell I am looking for and if so to see how he was wounded.

Thanks. Nick.

Armed Forces / Service record wounded query, please help
« on: Friday 06 November 09 23:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everyone,
Just found this service record of my great grandads brother Harry Towell.
I noticed that he is listed a being wounded, looks like gunshot wound right leg.

Just before that it says Transferred to leicestershire regiment (he was previously in sherwood foresters). I take it this means that he was wounded in his brief period in the leics regiment 11th battalion?

My query is mainly with the dates and location, as you can see there is one date at the left as 8/7/16 and another at the right which says 3/7/16 does that mean he was wounded on the 8th or 3rd? Also I would like to know if this could have been at the somme?

Thanks alot, Nick.

Hi Everyone,
The man in question is Henry Ashley Towell, my great x 3 grandad. I found him on the criminal registers, his trial is listed as being in 1857 in Hertfordshire and he was acquitted.

Can anyone tell me what the crime was. I would love to find out.

Thanks very much.

Armed Forces / Can someone identify this ww1 uniform and location please
« on: Sunday 06 September 09 01:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I found this photo in a box of old photos we have, I have no idea who is on it. Unfortunately the face is distorted due to what looks like glare from the sun.
I am wanting to know the uniform, regimental badge and possible location if anyone can help. It kind of looks like an officers uniform to me, but I could be wrong.

My great grandad was in ww1 and I know for definite he was in the fourth royal dragoon guards and was a corporal. Could the man on the photo be him, I have a feeling it isn't because we have other photos of him and he doesn't seem to bear much resemblance. I know that several of his brothers also fought, but if the chap on the photo is an officer then I highly doubt it was them as they were from a working class family.

Apparently my other great grandad was also in ww1, but we don't know what regiment he was in, he was from Norton north yorks so possibly yorkshire regiment? I am hoping someone can identify the regimental badges by the shape of them (they look triangular to me, possibly some sort of animal on a podium, zoomed in it looks like there could be legs?)

Background looks like some sort of river or canal? Maybe someone can help

Thanks guys.
Regards, Nick.

Hello there,
some people may have seen my other post regarding the location of the photo. I have decided to get it dated to give me a better idea of where it could have been and who the relation could be.

I at first thought the woman stood outside was a servant, but someone came up with the idea that it may be a nurses outfit (my g-g-g-grandma was a nurse). However, she was born around 1800 and died during the 1870's.

I thought that the photo looked to be around 1890, maybe someone can tell me different.

Regards, Nick.

Armed Forces / Looking for a world war one soldier, please help!
« on: Tuesday 01 September 09 12:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,
Okay so I was talking to one of my great uncles the other day and he said his father (my great grandad) was in world war one, none of us had known this before. However, he was unsure of what regiment or rank he held. I know that he didn't die and probably wasn't wounded because noone had mentioned this before.

I know that he was born in 1882 in Norton/Malton, North Yorkshire and his parents were John and Eliza Wood, I know lots of information about him and his occupation, he jointly ran a clothiers in Norton called Hornsey and Wood. However, I know zilch about his world war one status.

He was from a fairly working class background so I highly doubt he was an officer, and even if he had been I'm sure we would have heard before from other family members.

I thought that him being from Malton/Norton would put the Yorkshire regiment as the likeliest candidate, unfortunately there are tons of Arthur Wood's in the Yorkshire regiment on the medal roll index cards on ancestry. He may have even been in the royal engineers or something.

How can I go about finding him and shedding some light on what he did in World War One? Please help  :)

Kind regards, Nick.

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Trying to find the father of this igi entry
« on: Sunday 23 August 09 13:20 BST (UK)  »
This shows who I think is my great great great grandad and wife

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/IGI/individual_record.asp?recid=700119489288&lds=1&region=2&regionfriendly=British+Isles&frompage=99

However his birth date seems to differ on 1841 and 1851 census (he died before 1861 census unfortunately). They had my g-g-grandad John in 1839.

Anyway I have reached a dead end as I can't find an igi entry for his father.

Can anyone help?

Kind Regards, Nick.
