I would be grateful if someone could date these two photos for me please.
I've no idea who the people are, they are members of the Brown family who lived in Canterbury, Kent.
Thank you.

World War Two / Arthur Brown, York & Lancaster Regiment
« on: Monday 30 August 21 11:38 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying, without any success, to find out about my Dad's older brother Arthur William Brown, who died on 18 May 1941 aged 28.
I know that he was living in Rotherham in 1939, born in Canterbury, Kent in 1913. He was a Corporal in the York & Lancaster Regiment 16th Bn, No. 4757045, he enlisted in 1940. He's buried in Canterbury cemetery.
But I can't find out where he died or what happened and I don't know where to start! I would appreciate any help.
Thanks
Annie

The Common Room / Christening gown
« on: Tuesday 20 July 21 12:10 BST (UK)  »
This is probably a strange subject, but I'm hoping someone can help.
I have an antique christening gown, hand made by my great great grandmother in 1895 when she was expecting her first child. It's beautiful, but I've discovered that an area of lace on the front has been cut out since it was last used (I'm really upset/annoyed). Also a few bits of the stitching need restoration.
So I'm wondering if anyone has used a reputable antique fabric restorer, who did a good job and didn't cost the earth?
Thanks

Other Countries / Bombay birth and marriage records
« on: Tuesday 09 February 21 14:46 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me with this.
I'm trying to find out about my husband's family - his grandmother, Mary Hepburn, was born in Kirkee, Bombay in 1881.  I know that her parents were Thomas and Mary Anne Hepburn, who were both born in Scotland.  Mary Anne died in India and Thomas remarried there in 1890 and had more children.
But I can't find out why the family were in India, if Thomas was in the Army or whatever.
I have Thomas' death certificate from 1918, which says he worked at Woolwich Royal Arsenal as a Viewer (it looks like viewer).
Does anyone know how to obtain birth or marriage certificates for Indian/British registrations? I don't want to take out a year-long subscription with Find My Past or whatever, I already subscribe to Ancestry, but not their Worldwide option. Perhaps that's being mean, but it seems a bit much to answer this one question - what Thomas did, why was he in India.
Thank you.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Photo date of Philadelphia
« on: Monday 30 November 20 17:16 GMT (UK)  »
I'm hoping it's possible for someone to date this photo of Philadelphia, to confirm it's her - if later than I think, it's her mother.  The family are from Tenterden, Kent.
Thanks!

The Common Room / Problem obtaining GRO certificate
« on: Thursday 14 February 19 14:15 GMT (UK)  »
I recently ordered a marriage certificate from GRO.  I had all the necessary details - both full names, date of marriage, place, index reference numbers.  But they've just sent me a refund as "There is no trace of the above mentioned person at the reference you quoted".

Has anyone come across this before?  I'm not sure what it means, which person, there are two.  Does it mean the index reference number is wrong?  I've checked both names separately in the index and they come up with the same reference numbers.  Is there anything I can do - I really need this certificate.
Hoping someone can help.

The Common Room / Divorce Records
« on: Thursday 07 February 19 16:35 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know if there are records of UK divorces online?  I'm looking for a divorce in the 1940s but don't know where to start!
If they aren't available online, where is it best to look?
Thanks

Kent Lookup Requests / Ulcombe parish records
« on: Thursday 08 October 15 16:09 BST (UK)  »
I'm really hoping someone can help.
Does anyone have access to the Ulcombe parish registers?  I'm trying to trace my Ledger/Leger/St Ledger family (the spelling seems to vary), I've found them in Ulcombe back to John Ledger, born in Ulcombe in 1695, who married Sarah nee Gates in 1716 but I can't find John's parents or beyond this.  It would be great if someone could help please.
Thanks

London and Middlesex / Finding burial / cremation
« on: Thursday 25 June 15 17:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi - I'm trying to find where my great uncle was buried or cremated. He died in 1978 in a Newham hospital and had lived in Plaistow for the last years of his life. Is there any easy way of looking this up? I really don't know where to start so I'm hoping that someone can help.
Thanks
Annie
