The Common Room / Musician as occupation??
« on: Thursday 21 January 10 11:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

A marriage certificate of my ancestor William Richard Cobbin lists his occupation as "Musician".

How could I find more information about this? What on earth constitutes a musician as an occupation back in 1854?

For the record he married Hannah Robinson Swift on 1854 in Adelaide at the age of 19.

Does anyone have any ideas please?

Thank you!

Australia / ANDREWS/COBBIN/GUILLET
« on: Tuesday 03 November 09 09:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

Searching for any further information regarding the following people please:

WILLIAM ANDREWS (b1854 possibly in Liverpool, UK and d1893 North Carlton, Victoria). I don't know when or where he came to Australia.

William married Fanny Eliza Cobbin in 1877 and had Lillie, Fanny, Creasie, William, Frederick, Albert and Florence (my gr.grandmother).
William's father is possibly a HENRY ANDREWS but I have no information on him at all.

Fanny Cobbin's father was WILLIAM RICHARD COBBIN (b1835 in London, UK, don't know when he came to Australia, or died).
His parents were WILLIAM COBBIN b1802 and d1877 in Adelaide, SA; and ADELAIDE GUILLET born 1801 in France and d1853 in Adelaide, SA.

Any information on either WR Cobbin or Adelaide Guillet would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Australia / HAYES Jacob Henry and SMITH Ann of Tasmania, Australia
« on: Tuesday 03 November 09 09:16 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for any information regarding Jacob Henry Hayes b 1863 but I don't know where. He is listed in the Tasmanian Colonial Archive as marrying Ann Smith (b 1858) in 1884. Jacob died in Hobart, Tasmania in 1936.

They had the following children (all born in Tasmania, Australia):
Ethel Annie b 1886
Alice May b 1888
John Henry b 1889
Francis George b 1891
Maude Mary b 1893
Maude OR Mabel Lillian b 1897
Albert Edward b 1899

I have no information on his parents, or where he was born. I also don't have a great deal on Ann Smith other than her parents were George Talbot Smith (possibly born England) and Catherine Sheen/Sheehan (possibly born Ireland).

Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Family History Beginners Board / Birth Certificate "Not Present"
« on: Tuesday 03 November 09 04:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there,

Can anyone please tell me what the reference "not present" on a birth certificate means?

It is on an Australian (Victorian) Birth Cert from 1887, under the "Child - Name and whether present or not" column. I am assuming it means stillborn, but perhaps it doesn't?

Can anyone enlighten me please? Thanks.

Suffolk / BLIZZARD family in Ashill/Rushford/Thetford
« on: Wednesday 02 September 09 07:32 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

I am trying to trace my BLIZZARD (possibly Blizard) family around the Rushford/Thetford area. Currently I can track back to George Blizzard (b 1812 Ashill, Norfolk; d 1890 Stanley, Tasmania, Australia) and Pheobe Blake (b 1814 Barningham, Suffolk; d 1897 Stanley, Tasmania, Australia). They married in 1833 and had John, James, Louisa, David, William, George, Eliza, Harriet and another James, and emigrated to Australia in 1858 on the Trade Winds, where they settled in Tasmania. The second James is my gr.gr.grandfather.

Primarily, I am trying to find George's parents and some record of his birth.  I believe George's parents to be John Blizzard (possibly b 1794; d 1879) and Elizabeth Leech (no info at all) but cannot confirm this in any way.

I would also be interested in any information on a building or place called Sparrow Hall in Rushford, Thetford. According to the 1851 Census George and his family resided here at number 36. I would most grateful for any information that may be available about the area.

Thanks for reading!
