The Common Room / Interpretation Help, Please
« on: Saturday 16 November 19 10:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Folks,
Hope I'm posting this in the right section...
I know you're an intelligent, helpful bunch - good folk have assisted in the past.  My brick wall (one of them!), despite researching on an off for over a decade, is my 4th g-grandfather, Richard Haworth, born 1808-1811, depending on which document is used as reference, died 7 June 1868, buried 10 June 1868 in Lancashire, England.  Death notices appeared in England and Australia, where his son was living (where I live), and I have the death certificate, which says 58 when he died (no parents, naturally!).

There are many others (26 trees on 'that' site, to which I've subscribed, again) who have him born 6 April, parents as Matthew Haworth and Sarah Thick.

For a while, I went with the masses, but it niggled that neither parents' names follow down through the main branch, or smaller branchlets (I've explored them all as far as I can).  Then, I came across  a transcript of a footnote, attached to the baptism of Richard, son of Matthew and Sarah.  This is where I need help, please.

"Footnote: 'I certify that Richard HOWARTH appeared before me and declared that he was born 6.00am Apr 6 1811 and produced a Family Bible with an ancient entry to that effecr' (sic) dated 3 Aug 1868."

Ignoring the name spelling (interchangeable even within families, depending on who did the recording, am I right in assuming the entry was made on the day of said Richard's visit?  Or am I wrong?

I'll be immensely grateful for others' take on this.

Scotland / Anderson from Scotland to Geelong Australia
« on: Wednesday 15 September 10 15:11 BST (UK)  »
Running out of life, trying to find my g-g-grandmother, so hope someone knows something.  Open to suggestions.

Margaret Anderson b abt 1841 - according to marriage and children's birth certificates
Birth location varies - could be Ayrshire or Stirlingshire, possibly Falkirk or Airth, depending on which cert.

Father: James ANDERSON - labourer - (Marr cert)
Mother: Jane (or perhaps Margaret) BLACK (again, that's all I have on marr cert).

Margaret married  William TANNER at Moorabool River (near Geelong) in Victoria in 1858.

Chn: Mary Ann, Jemima Martin, James, Jane, Alice, William Alfred, John Joseph, Stephen, Charles John Sharpe, Harriet, William Stephen, Edwin Charles.

Nowhere can I find a marriage for Jane BLACK and James ANDERSON.  Have scoured shipping lists and found several Margaret Andersons, of varying ages and in the company of various folk, but have no idea how to encourage the 'real' Margaret to stand up.

Margaret Died: 1926 St Kilda, Victoria.  According to family stories, she came as a child to Australia with her aunt and uncle.  No idea if her parents came, too.  According to her death certificate she was 88 years in Victoria, which would mean she came to Oz in 1838 (!)  Also death cert says she married at 22 and marriage cert says she was 16.  Any wonder I'm confused?

About to download  the Scottish marriages (link in resources) but on dial-up it will take all night, so will, tomorrow.

Devon / VIGERS to BERRY
« on: Wednesday 30 September 09 00:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi Folks,

At hair-tearing point... trying to find any details on Elizabeth VIGERS, born Spreyton, Devon 1828-29.  The last I can track her is the 1861 census, age 32, unmarried, working as a housemaid for J Walker at Marpool Hall, Withycombe Rawleigh.

Father John and mother Jemima nee WAY/WAYE/WEY married 1828, Spreyton.

Elizabeth's sister, Mary, born 1831, Spreyton, married John Henry BERRY in 1862 at Marylebone, Middlesex.  They and their 5 children immigrated to New Zealand in 1873 where they then had Isabella in 1874 (my g-grandmother).  Yet to track them to Australia, but they arrived around 1880 re Isabella's death reg (not all children).

Meanwhile, back to Elizabeth - sometime after 1861 she also married a BERRY - family heirlooms bearing names Elizabeth Vigers 1853 and Elizabeth Berry 1873.  Numerous searches with name variations have turned up nothing.  (Devon records for Spreyton scarce.)  It's as if she dropped off the planet after the 1861 census...

Any help, knowledge, suggestions would most appreciated.

Jen
