Gloucestershire / Eva Dobell : poet
« on: Sunday 16 September 12 20:38 BST (UK)  »
Eva Dobell was a well-respected poet writing about what she saw as a nurse among the casualties of the first world war.
I can find no provenance for her: birth, death etc.
I can find Eveline Jesse Dobell, who died in the same year (1963) but was born in 1876, whereas Eva is credited with a dob of 1867. Eveline's  father was Clarence Mason Dobell and he is well documented.
The only reference to Clarence as Eva's father I have found is on a site www.allpoetry.com but again without evidence.
Wikipedia believes Eva's dob (without sources) and scores of other sites repeat the same information.
It seems to me the two people are one and the same.
Can you help to prove or disprove this?
Eveline Dobell's family lived in Charlton Kings, Gloucestershire.

Buteshire / Arran McCabes
« on: Saturday 12 June 10 18:23 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for McCabe family links with Arran

Some McCabes from Arran were apparently merceneraries (Gallowglass) and found their way to Cavan, Fermanagh and thereabouts in Ireland.

Does anyone have pointers or advice?

I am trying to find information on descendants of Sir Henry Letheby Tidy (b. 1877 d. 1960), particularly his grandchildren.
There is some evidence that Hampshire could be one place to look.

But it could also be Zimbabwe...

If you have information but don't want to make it "public", I'd be happy to receive a personal message.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / William George Ramsay : *COMPLETED*
« on: Monday 14 December 09 01:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all

I'm looking for more information on the son (second child) of Sir William Ramsay.

What I have so far is:

Father Sir William Ramsay (chemist)
Mother Margaret Johnston Marshall Ramsay ( nee Buchanan)
Sister Catherine Elizabeth Ramsay

He was born 1886 and the 1901 and 1911 censuses indicate he was living with his parents in London (St Pancras/Kensington) and that he was a technical chemist (?) in 1911.

Any help welcomed!

East Lothian (Haddingtonshire) / Ramsays of Haddington ca. 1794
« on: Thursday 15 October 09 23:54 BST (UK)  »
The following notice appeared:

"The manufacturing of ENGLISH BLANKETS and CLOTHS and the DYING BUSINESS in all its Branches, are to be CARRIED ON by Mrs. Ramsay, for the behoof of her Family, in the same manner as by her late Husband WILLIAM RAMSEY, Dyer and Clothier in Haddington. She returns thanks to her Employers for their former favours, and hopes that they will still continue them.

HADDINGTON, 18th July 1794."

This lady was the great-grandmother of Sir William Ramsay (1852 - 1916), the chemist who, inter alia, discovered helium and various other gases.

I'm trying to bridge the gap.

I know that Mrs Ramsay had a son (name not known - but a strong chance it might have been William!), who had a son William (b. 1812) who produced (Sir) William, whose mother was Catherine Robertson (b abt 1813).

Any help welcomed!

East Lothian (Haddingtonshire) / Ramsays of Haddington : 1794 and thereabouts
« on: Thursday 15 October 09 23:41 BST (UK)  »
On 18 July 1794, the following notice appeared:

"The manufacturing of ENGLISH BLANKETS and CLOTHS, and the DYING (sic) BUSINESS in all its branches, are to be CARRIED ON by Mrs. Ramsay, for the behoof of her Family, in the same manner as by her late husband WILLIAM RAMSAY,Dyer and Clothier in Haddington. She reurns thanks to her Employers for their former favours, and hopes that they will still continue them."

I'm trying to fill out this scenario and to link it to their progeny.

They had a son. I don't know anything about him except that he appears to have had a son William b. about 1812 who married Catherine Robertson (b. about 1813). They produced a son William Ramsay (b. 1852: d. 1916 in England).

The rest, as they say, is history. This William became one of the most eminent scientists of his day; discovered helium and various other inert gases; won a Nobel prize for chemistry; got a knighthood.

I would very much like to fill out the gaps in this part of the picture. Can anyone help?

When he gave his speech as a Nobel prize winner he referred to his grandfather working in the chemical business in Haddington. Hence my searching around these parts!
