Lancashire Lookup Requests / Completed with thanks
« on: Monday 20 September 10 16:58 BST (UK)  »
I know from Census records that Albert Cross was born in 1871 Bolton.  There is no log of his birth though.  I assume he was either given up at birth or his mother died giving birth.

In 1871 he was living with a Sumner family the Head Edwin Sumner born 1833 and is listed as Nephew aged 3 months.  In 1881 he was a visiter aged 10 with a Bradshaw family. The head was Martha Bradshaw born 1821.  In 1891 he was a boarder with a Mary Hilton.  In 1892 he got married to Ann Harris, had 5 children and then died in Oldham in 1906 aged 35.

If anyone is able to find his birth I would be more than grateful.

Denbighshire / James Butler born 1811-1813 died 1887
« on: Monday 20 September 10 16:12 BST (UK)  »
I'm having all sorts of trouble pinning this down because each census from 1841-1881 gives differing information.  The place of birth varies in spelling but I am sure it should be Chirk.  What I know is that james was born between 1811-1813 and moved to Bilston , Staffs and married wife Mary who was born there.  They spent the rest of their days in Bilston.  They had 3 sons of which one was also called James who coincidentally married a Mary from Wales.

Living in Lancashire means my knowledege of Chirk is quite slim other than I know it is either in or near Wrexham.  From what I can see there was just the 1 church (St Mary's) and the population circa 1800 was about 1600.  I'm wondering if anyone knows what if any parish records exist.  I'm hoping to pay Chirk a visit in November and see how far I can trace back.  I believe St Mary's was built in the 15th centrury and am keeping my fingers crossed that I might be able to trace back further than first thought.

Any help or advice would be more than welcome.

Will I need a marriage cert to simply confirm a date of marriage?  I know William Henry Butler married Sarah Fairclough at St Mark's in 1904 but haven't got the exact date.   Would I be out of order contacting the church?

I'm trying to find more details of the death of James Butler, died between Jan - Mar 1887 in Bilston aged 75.

Every census from 1841 - 1881 had his dob and place of birth different ie between 1911 - 1914 and that he was born in Wales but the place of birth varies from Lyn Chrk, Ckurik, Ponte Blue and simply North Wales.  I'm trying to work back by firstly tracing his death.  He was married prior to 1837 which doesnt help to a Mary from Bilston.

I was hoping to trace the cemetary where he is buried and then get details of who else is in the plot.  I might be looking on the wrong site but wolverhampton council dont seem to have online records.  Any help would be much appreciated.

I've been searching the census but having no joy.

I'm looking to trace Mary Bownas/Bownes (varies on census records). Born 1827, Liverpool.

In 1848, she married Samual Winter born 1821 from Beverley/also comes up as Bradford in the 1851.  I know from the 1851 census that their son Robert Winter was 2 months old at that time.  They lived in Liverpool with Mary's brother George Bownas b. 1816 Kirby, his wife Ellen b 1816 Liverpool and their children.

Having married Samuel Winter in 1848, I thought it should not be too difficult to find Mary Bownas on the 1841 census but there is no trace of her, nor her brother his wife and kids who were over 10yrs of age n 1851.

George and Ellen's children were

George Bownas b 1833 Liverpool
Henry Bownas b 1839 Liverpool

Bizzare but 1851 also has a son Jonathan b 1830 although George and Ellen were both born in 1816 so I doubt that is right.

I've searched under Bownas, Bownes, Bounas, Bounes, Baunas, Bou and Bau.

If anyone else can find it and drop me a note telling me where I can find it I would be grateful.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / 1911 Census - Henry Butler and a marriage
« on: Thursday 17 September 09 11:26 BST (UK)  »
I believe that Henry was living at 12 Oakley St Weast in 1909.  Please can someone confirm whether he was living there in 1911 and who resided at the property at that time.  I'm trying to confirm the death of his wife Mary Ann Dyball and believe she may have died in 1898.  Before getting a copy of the death cert for my suspicions I was hoping if someone could confirm whether or not she was at this address in 1911.

The marriage I am struggling with is for Richard Butler to a Grace Singleton.  I know Richard lived between brn 1807 Salford - d. 1862 Salford and Grace 1807 born Kirkham - d. Salford 1883.  I'm guessing they were married between 1822 - 1835 judging by the date of bith of their children.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Norfolk Lookup Requests / Few queries re Norwich
« on: Tuesday 15 September 09 21:23 BST (UK)  »
I've been doing really well but hit a bit of a brick wall with this one.

Mary Ann Dyball married in Salford, Lancs to a Henry Butler.  She was born in Norwich as shown on the 1871 & 1881 census.  I know she was born in 1840 between Jan and March but was hoping I could get the date.  She was a nursemaid aged 11 on the 1851 census.  I've found their marriage and cleared that up.  It seems she moved to Salford in 1861 to get married hence not shown on the 1861 census.

From this info I discovered her parents were John Dyball and Susan Burton both born around 1816.

Susan Burton's parents were William Burton 1766 - 1844 and Mary Burton (can't trace maidenname) 1766 - 1854.  They lived at the Lion and Castle Yard, St Timberhill with John and Susan.  I'm struggling with William and Mary's births and can't trace their marriage.

I'm also trying to find the deaths of John and Susan along with their births and marriage.

The main thing I am looking for though is the parents of John Dyball.

I know that on the 1861 census John and Suan had moved to Rose Lane, St Peters Per Mountergate.  From there I have hit a brick wall.

Any help on any of the points would be much appreciated.

I'm hoping someone might be able to track information concerning the following.

Henry Butler Born Salford approx 1837 and Mary Ann Dyball born Norwich approx 1840.  I know they married in Salford in 1861.  As they would have both been infants at the time of the census, I'm trying to find details of their households.

Any help would ne much appreciated.

Lancashire Completed Lookup Requests / Lowton, Lancs - Completed, many thanks all.
« on: Friday 11 September 09 17:53 BST (UK)  »
The 1911 census shows my great great grandmother as Sarah Butler (maidenname fairclough) aged 30 as born in Lowton, Lancs.  However there does not appear to be a record of her birth.  Having looked there was a Sarah born in Leigh and I am wondering if this could be the one based on the below that I found online.  This is a bit of a longshot but is anyone familiar with the area?

The townships of Lowton suffer from an identity problem -
The address is Warrington but Lowton is part of the Metropolitian Borough of WIGAN Lancashire
The telephone numbers are Ashton, Newton, Culcheth, Leigh and Wigan. Most of the numbers are in the BT Wigan Book but some are in the Warrington Book.
