Family History Beginners Board / Family Book
« on: Friday 27 October 23 11:55 BST (UK)  »
I am in possession of a handsome leather bound book about polar exploration.  I inherited it from my mother and in the front it is inscribed "Edward William Bick, Rushden House, March 26th 1879."
Edward (His actual name was William Edward) was my Mother's great uncle and he would have been 16 in the year in question. (born 1863). I have been trying to find Rushden House without success.  I thought it might have been a school prize and a very handsome prize it would have been, but that might explain the mistake with the order of his name.  The family would not be likely to make such a mistake.  Any suggestions?

Northumberland / Peter Tullock born 1803 approx
« on: Sunday 27 May 18 14:31 BST (UK)  »
I am doing some research on behalf of an old friend and have run into a brick wall with Peter Tullock.  The 1851 census shows a family headed by Peter Tullock, wife Mary (nee Taylor) and children William, James, Edward and George.  All resident in Hartley, Northumberland.  William is the key member in the line I am following.  Mary was born in Newcastle, all the children in Seaton Sluice, Northumberland and Peter was born in Scotland, occupation Mariner.  So far so good.  Not one of the members of this family appears in the census of 1841 in England.  Edward and George were too young but William and James should be there as should their mother, even if Peter was away at sea.
Peter was born in or about 1803 and Mary about 1807.  I have found birth records of two possible Marys.  I can find no record of a Scottish birth of a Peter or a record of a marriage between the two. The 1841 census for Scotland shows only one Peter Tullock, resident in Orkney and Shetland, a fisherman, but he has another family altogether.  By 1861 Mary was the lone head of the household and Edward the only remaining child, George having died in 1854 and the eldest two presumably left home. Any suggestions as to the next line of enquiry would be very welcome.

The Common Room / Missing prayer desk, Carlisle
« on: Tuesday 06 June 17 17:43 BST (UK)  »
I know this is a very long shot but I am trying to trace a prayer desk from the Church of St John the Evangelist, Carlisle.  Lurking in some old family papers I recently found a parish magazine from 1941 which described the presentation of a prayer desk dedicated to Thomas and Sarah Percival by their son George Percival.  George was my Grandfather and they were my Great Grandparents. Last week I visited the church with some American cousins, also George's grandchildren, and we hoped to see this prayer desk with it's inscription.  The church has undergone considerable renovation and we were advised by the current Vicar that the prayer desk, along with the choir stalls, was disposed of as part of the renovation in 2010.  The Vicar has no knowledge of where the furnishings went.  Has anyone out there seen it and can they put me in touch with the present owner(s)?  As I say a long shot but nothing ventured........

World War Two / US Navy WWII
« on: Friday 05 August 16 10:52 BST (UK)  »
I had an uncle who migrated to the US as a child with his mother in 1922 when she separated from my Grandfather.  He went on to serve in the US Navy during WWII.  Has anyone any advice on where I start to search for his US Navy service record?  Thanks for any suggestions.

The Common Room / Lord Wharton Bibles
« on: Friday 04 December 15 16:20 GMT (UK)  »
I have a Lord Wharton prayer book presented in 1901 and a bible presented in 1902.  They both belonged to my Grandfather but the name has been obliterated from the presentation plate in the front in both cases.  My father assured me they were presented to his father but he offered no explanation for the obliteration of the name in the front.  Does anyone know if a register is kept of presentees? Grandfather went to school in Carlisle.  I have written twice to the present trustees of the charity but have received no reply.  Is anyone able to suggest how I may further my search?
