Lancashire Lookup Requests / Jemima and Isabella Telford
« on: Thursday 09 May 13 09:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I would like to know if there is any connection between Jemima and Isabella Telford.  Jemima Telford was born in 1849 in Liverpool and Isabella born in 1842-43 in Liverpool also.  We think that Jemimas parents were James and Bridgit Telford, and Isabellas father we think was William Telford (a policeman), mother unknown.

Jemima married  Richard Kelly and had a son William Telford Kelly born Isle of Man in 1869 and died in Liverpool in 1979,  he married Emily Eleanor Fargher (Emily born 1871 in Bolton, Lancashire) on 11.10.1919 at St Dunstan, Edgehill, Liverpool.

Emily Farghers mother was Isabella Telford married to Edward Fargher.

Hope that this all makes sense.  If you could come up with a connection between Jemima and Isabella we would be most appreciative.

Cheers Liz

« on: Thursday 13 September 12 03:39 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find what happened to my grandfathers brothers who it is claimed went to America I am guessing sometime after 1875.  They were born in Tillicoultry, Clackmannan, Scotland on 26 April 1860 and 17 November 1862 respectively.  Their parents were William and Agnes Murray (nee Jamieson).

Hope that someone may be able to help with this.

I am trying to find what happened to James and Andrew Murray sons of William Murray and Agnes Murray (nee Jamieson).  James was born 26 April 1860 and Andrew born 17 November 1862.  They also had a son William Murray (my grandfather) who was born I think about 1878.

It is understood that James and Andrew went to America, but not sure if this is true.

William and Agnes were married on 9 December 1859.

James and Andrew were born in Tillicoultry, Clackmannan.

Hope someone can help me.

Hi everyone, I am wondering if anyone can help with locating the birth of my GGrandfather Thomas Johnson.  Yes I hear you all now saying not another common name, just about as bad as Smith and Brown.  I have located his marriage in Gateshead, Durham on 14 Sept 1880 to Ellen Richardson.  It says he was born in 1854 which his death certificate also confirms.  He died in New Zealand in 1937 and at the time of his death he had 8 children still alive.

I have found records in NZ that confirm there were 5 children I can connect to them.  The first would have been born either 1880 or 1881 named Margaret then I cant confirm any more births until 1884 (Matthew), 1886 (Ellen), 1888 (Jane my Grandmother), 1889 (Minnie) all born in England (my grandmother having been born in Stockton-on-Tees.  Another birth I have found in NZ is Mary Ethel born 1895.

They were supposed to have come to NZ in either 1888 or 1889 but I cant find any records of their shipping list.  They ended up in Coromandel, NZ where Thomas was a mining Engineer, his wife Ellen, or Helen as she is listed on his death certificate plus headstone, died in Coromandel in 1897 and is buried there but is mentioned on his headstone where he is buried in Auckland.

Helens father was George Richardson, and Thomas' parents were Matthew and Margaret Johnson.  I think I have found Thomas and Ellen in the 1881 census living in No Side 1 Victoria Terrace,m Haydon, Northumberland.  It says he is a Driver of standing engine.  His death certificate says he was an engine driver so that all makes sense.  It also says that Thomas was born in Plunderherheath, Northumberland, but when I google that there is no such place.

I hope this all makes sense, I cant find any of the births in England and guess there could have been more.

Armed Forces / 1861 Census
« on: Sunday 14 November 10 08:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, my GG grandfather Henry Macdonald (McDonald) was in the Royal Scots Greys in 1861 when the census was taken.  I have found that they were posted to Scotland in this year and wonder how I would find him in this census.
I have found his wife in the census in England in that year staying with her parents as she had just had their first child.
I have also been sent a copy of the 1851 census where he was posted to Canterbury, Kent.  He was 22 in the 1851 census so presume he would be around 33 in the 1861 census.  He was born in Govan, Glasgow, Lanarkshire.

Hope someone can help.

Lanarkshire / Henry Macdonald Completed with thanks
« on: Thursday 11 November 10 07:06 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, my GG Grandfather Henry Macdonald was born in Glasgow, Parish Govan, County Lanarkshire.  I have found this from his army records serving in the Scots Greys with the british army.  I have been unable to find any birth details for him.  His fathers name was definitely Henry as well as I have this off his marriage certificate.  Unfortunately he was married in England so it does not have his mothers name.  His New Zealand death certificate suggests his mothers name was Ann but I am uncertain if this is correct.  I have queried the NZ BDM people to find out more about his mothers name but as yet have not had a reply.  He was born in either 1827 or 1828.

Hope that someone can help, thanks.

Armed Forces / Henry Macdonald - Scots Greys "Completed" thankyou very much.
« on: Monday 08 November 10 06:22 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, dont know if this is in the right place but, I would like to know if anyone can put me in the right direction to get information on my GG grandfather who was in the Scots Greys from approximately 1844-1864/5.  He was serving in Ireland when his first son was born in England.  He was married in Atherstone, England in 1859.  His first three children were born in Atherstone, the next 5 born in Chorlton.  They emigrated to NZ in 1874.  He is listed as a private in one of the birth certs.

Henry was born in Stirlingshire, Scotland in 1827/28. I cant find a birth record for him so have come to a bit of a halt in going back any further for his parents etc.  Hope someone has some ideas for me.

Cheers Liz

Australia / James Robert CAINS
« on: Thursday 05 August 10 03:14 BST (UK)  »
James Robert Cains was born 28 November 1831 or 1833 in Sydney and came to New Zealand in 1839/40.  We cant find any record of him in New Zealand so are wondering if he may have gone back to Australia.  His parents were William Tudway Cains and his mother was Isabella Cains nee Whittle.

Stirlingshire / Henry Macdonald
« on: Wednesday 23 June 10 23:40 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find any information I can for my GGgrandfather Henry Macdonald.  According to his death certificate (he died in New Zealand), he was born in Stirlingshire around 1828.  It states his father was Henry and his mother was Ann.  I have searched in Scotlands People but have not found any entries for a Henry with father Henry and mother Ann.

He was in the Scots Greys serving in Ireland in 1861 when his first child was born in Atherstone, Warwickshire, England.  He was married to Jane Robinson in 1859 also in Atherstone.  His first three children were born in Atherstone where on the last birth certificate from there his is listed as Private in Scots Greys.  They then moved to Chorlton near Manchester where he is then listed as a Beer Retailer.  The dates suggest that he may have been with the Scots Greys for about 20 years then retired.  They then came out to NZ in 1874 where on the ships list they have Lanark as the county they left from.

Hope someone can come up with something for me to carry on with.

Liz
