World War Two / Could LAC Donald Pike have been a rear gunner?
« on: Tuesday 29 September 20 22:44 BST (UK)  »
My uncle Donald Robert Pike (Don) enlisted in the RAF in March 1940 at No 2 Recruitment Centre, Cardington.
His service number was MILITIA 958402 and after basic training became a Telephone Operator and was posted with 961 Sqn (21 Air Defence Coastal Command and UK), Dover - Barrage Balloons on 28 August 1940.
He was recommended for Air Gunner training in 1941 and was selected in August 1942 attending the Aircrew Receiving Centre in Regents Park, London in November of that year.  He attended 14 Initial Training Wing in Bridlington in January 1943 and joined the North African Air Forces (231 Wing) in December 1943.
He was discharged in February 1946. Below are the details taken from his service record:

Date of Enlistment 27/03/1940 Service Commences 27/03/1940
Trade A.C.H. General Duties 27/03/1940
Employments (mustering)  A.C.H. Telephone Operator 29/08/1940 Telephonist 29/01/1942
Last Employment (Telephonist) Group III  15/04/1943
Rank;Trade  AC2; ACH/TO 31/12/1940
LAC; ACH/TO     31/12/1941
LAC; Telephonist  31/12/1944
LAC; Telephonist  1945

I always thought, through family stories, that he was a rear gunner on Wellington bombers, however as I understand it rear gunners were usually sergeants or above. Don didn’t achieve a rank above LAC so would this mean he did not complete his aircrew training and remained a telephone operator?

Essex / Rokeby Street and Bridge Road School Stratford
« on: Friday 24 March 17 17:11 GMT (UK)  »
My step-father attended Bridge Road primary school, Stratford from the age of 5 to 14 (1927 to 1936) Would anyone know if any photos exist of the school and/or pupils?

He was baptised at St Johns Church in 1922. His family lived at 11 Rokeby Street, Stratford until it was destroyed by bombing in 1941, then moved to Somerset where he still lives, aged 94.

If anyone has any photos of the school or pre-war Rokeby Street they would be willing to share he would love to see them.

« on: Tuesday 19 June 12 20:26 BST (UK)  »
Would any kind person please be able to look for a marriage registered at Plymouth in the September quarter of 1866.  Groom was Matthew How ORCHARD and bride Mary J  BAILEY.  Mary was born at Bickleigh c 1843 so I assume she would be married there.
I would be interested to know Matthew's occupation and father's name.
Many thanks.

Somerset Lookup Requests / Dulverton Poorhouse/Workhouse 1851
« on: Saturday 29 May 10 13:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Would anyone know where I can find the 1851 census records for Dulverton Workhouse, Somerset?
I am still trying to find the elusive Caleb Cotton Stevens born Winsford, Som in 1842 and would appreciate any help or suggestions.  He must be somewhere in 1851 and 1861 and I would love to put the final pieces of the jigsaw together for his family.
Thank you.

Devon / Help with 1841 Ivybridge census please
« on: Tuesday 11 May 10 15:24 BST (UK)  »
Would anyone know where I would find Highland House, Ivybridge, Devon on the 1841 census?
I have searched through Ermington without success.  This was the home of William and Mary Ann Cotton.
Thanks

England / Who was William COTTON?
« on: Friday 30 April 10 19:20 BST (UK)  »
A William Cotton was named as the father on the birth certificate of Caleb Stevens, born Winsford, Somerset on 10 October 1842,  mother Mary Stevens.
Caleb was baptised on 22 January 1843 at Winsford as Caleb Cotton Stevens, mother Mary Stevens, spinster of Winsford.
I have been unable to locate Caleb, Mary or William on the 1851 and 1861 census. Caleb is on the 1871 census at Kingsbrompton (now Brompton Regis) a saddler aged 28.

Many questions are raised - was William a local man or a visitor; were Mary and William in domestic service together, if so where?  Was William a member of the gentry?  Could they have been abroad for the two missing censuses?

Perhaps these questions will never be answered but it would be good to know.

Somerset / Caleb Cotton STEVENS 1842 Winsford Somerset UK
« on: Friday 30 April 10 16:03 BST (UK)  »
Caleb Stevens was born on 10 October 1842 at Winsford, Somerset.  I attach his Birth Certificate which shows his mother was Mary Stevens and father William Cotton.
His baptism record at Winsford on 22 January 1843 states his name as Caleb Cotton Stevens and his mother Mary Stevens, spinster of Winsford (no father's name)
On his marriage record at St James Taunton on 18 November 1868 to Jane Louise Peppin, his father's name is written as William Stevens.
I cannot find him on the 1851 or 1861 census.  He appears on 1871 census at Kingsbrompton (now Brompton Regis) saddler aged 28.
It is a mystery to the family where he was in 1851 and 1861, what happened to his mother Mary and who was William Cotton.
If anyone can shed any light on this I would be pleased to hear from them.

World War One / Military Hospital Tipperary
« on: Friday 02 October 09 15:35 BST (UK)  »
The attached photo shows my grandfather Arthur Charles Sully who served in the 2/Royal Fusiliers.  He is seated on the right of the front row, with bandaged hand after being shot.
The photo was allegedly taken at a Military Hospital in Tipperary.  Apparently he was wounded four times, the first at Gallipoli and the last in France.  Would anyone know if soldiers were taken from France to Ireland (and dare anyone to say it's a long way!) and if records would exist of medical treatment.
Thanks

World War Two / ROYAL ARTILLERY LARKHILL 1943
« on: Wednesday 30 September 09 12:19 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone recognise any of these signallers from P Battery 4th Royal Artillery, based at Larkhill on Salisbury Plain in 1943?
My late Dad - Arthur Nuttall - is bottom right in the group of five and back row left on group photo.
It would be great to hear from anyone who remembered him.
