Kent Lookup Requests / PLUMSTEAD CEMETERY 1952
« on: Thursday 20 December 12 13:12 GMT (UK)  »
I have just been looking at the 1952 burial register for an ancestor buried at Plumstead Cemetery. Under the place of burial grave entry information in the register there is an annotation of "3rd Class". Would ROOTSCHAT members know what this signifies?
Thank you

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Photo of 3 sisters
« on: Thursday 25 October 12 13:46 BST (UK)  »
I would appreciate RC memebers help in dating the attached photo.
I believe the photo may be from around the mid 1850s - possibly taken in Ireland and shows three sisters OR two daughters with mother (in centre). The photo shows no other identifying marks or features (front and back).
Thank you.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Temperance Hotel in Leeds - Parker family
« on: Wednesday 21 March 12 04:35 GMT (UK)  »
G'day

Looking for any family connections to and photos of a Temperance & commercial hotel & coffee house at 106 Briggate, Leeds, Yorkshire, owned or operated by the Parker family over 1837 to 1880. The Parkers may also have owned/operated a temperance hotel at 1 Wood Street, Leeds in this time

Names that crop up from UK Census and Leeds Trade Directories records are William and Elizabeth Parker and children Thomas, Edwin, Harriett, John, Henry George.

Elizabeth's maiden name is possibly Lazenby with marriage to William in 1828.

Edwin possibly married a lass by name of Emma Oates with a daughter Helen Maud who may have married a solicitor/law clerk by name of Arthur Stirk. Edwin probably ran the hotel after his father (William) died in late 1870s.

Thomas and Harriett may have died young.

I am specifically interested in Henry George Parker (b about 1835) and whether he  migrated to Australia 1851-1853.

Cheers

Michael

Cork / WHITE family of Cork City in 1800s
« on: Tuesday 15 November 11 09:32 GMT (UK)  »
I have been endeavouring to trace Irish records of ancestors - family name of White whose origins are probably from Cork County.

From Australian records I have established that my 2nd great grandmother and her two sisters migrated from Ireland to Australia in the mid 1850s. After arriving in Sydney, they settled in Cooma (Eden-Monaro district of southern New South Wales), married and raised family.

Mary White born about 1832 Cork Ireland. Arrived in Australia about 1854. Her 1883 death certificate shows father as John White occupation butcher and mother as Margaret White (nee Canary but more likely Kincary or Kinnane). Mary sponsored her sisters to later migrate.

Catherine White born about 1835 Cork Ireland. Arrived in Australia on immigrant ship Glen Isla in July 1857. Origins shown as City of Cork. Father shown as deceased and mother Margaret then living at Cloyne (?)

Margaret White born about 1837 Cork Ireland. Arrived in Australia on immigrant ship General Caulfield in October 1865. Origins shown as Middletown Cork County. Father shown as deceased and mother Margaret living at  ?bridge. An earlier record from 1862 indicates Margaret’s occupation as domestic servant and then living at South Main Street, Cork County. A referee is the parish priest at the same address, so presumably Margaret (and possibly her mother Margaret) may have been a servant in or to the household of the priest/s.

It would seem that the father John was deceased before 1854. His occupation as butcher and his daughter Margaret’s residency locations would seem to suggest the family may have been based in Cork City.

The three sisters were single women when they migrated. Neither could read or write. Their background is Roman Catholic.

It is always possible that given and family names, and the origin/residency locations in the written Australian immigration records have been influenced by an English ear listening to a broad Irish accent.

I have searched out a number of websites of Irish records, but so far have not found any definitive records of the sisters and their parents.

I am hoping that Irish RootsChat members might be able to provide some leads that I might be able to explore further.

Thank you

Galway / Arburt ??? in Galway - where is it
« on: Monday 13 June 11 05:23 BST (UK)  »
On immigrant ship passenger arrival written records, my Irish ancestor is shown as arriving in Austrlia in 1864 on the ship Sirocco and his origins from Arburt Galway Ireland. I have not been able to locate "Arburt"

I suspect that "Arburt" is possibly the written expression of an English ear listening to a broad Irish accent.

Can any RC members suggest what and where is "Arburt" around the mid 1860s??

Thanks

Armed Forces / Hartfordshire Militia Before 1864
« on: Tuesday 05 April 11 11:05 BST (UK)  »
My ancestor was born 1845 in Lexden (Dedham) Essex. In his attestation papers for service in the Royal Marines (at Woolwich) commencing 1864, he has answered (to the question about prior service) service in the Hartfordshire Militia. His occupation prior to enlisting in the RMs is shown as musician.

I am assuming, therefore, that he may have been in a band element of the militia and possibly served some time between say 1855 and 1864. Can RC members provide any background info. about the Hartfordshire Militia and whether there may be records of service for that period?

I am guessing that service in a militia would have been of a casual nature.

Census and Resource Discussion / CUSTOM HOUSE - who resided there in 1922?
« on: Thursday 31 March 11 08:20 BST (UK)  »
I have my grandfathers UK merchant navy service book which shows his home address at 112 Leyes Road Custom House London E16.  This prior to his settling in Australia.
The service book covers the period 1921 to 1925.
How might I go about finding out what (family residence, boarding house, pub etc) was located at the home address 1921 to 1925 and also who resided there? Are there on-line resources e.g. local historical groups, trade directories, electoral rolls available for this period? Any suggestions would be appreciated
As near as I can work out the Custom House area was heavily bombed during WW11 and, in any event, in more recent time may have been impacted by redevelopment of the docks area.

Occupation Interests / Dairyman/Cowkeeper - Kellys Directory
« on: Saturday 11 September 10 14:03 BST (UK)  »
I have an ancestor HENRY LOBB who is listed in the 1874 and 1882 Kelly's Directory for Kent, Woolwich, Pellipar Road.  In the 1874 directory his occupation is shown as Dairyman.
I am trying to get an understanding about why he would be listed in the directory. For example, does the directory have a social status or an ocuupational/business focus? Why would someone want to be listed in the directory? Or is the diectory simply the "white/yellow pages" of its day.
Any advice from RC memebers would be appreciated.

Galway / Portumna, Ireland - Confused
« on: Saturday 01 May 10 12:44 BST (UK)  »
I have just started to research a branch of my wife's irish family tree.
The scant word of mouth family record I have indicates that a Campbell-Butler (married and maiden surname name respectively) ancestor was born "1835 in Boola near Portumna". When  I GOOGLE Boola, I get a location in County Cork. When I GOOGLE Portumna I get a location in County Galway.
Perhaps the family record is confused over time - I know I am.
Can RC members help clarify? Is there a Boola (town/village/place name) near Portumna?
Thank you.

Michael
