Can anyone help me find out which pits my ancestors may have worked at.  Almost ALL my male relatives were miners.

Thanks

Lanarkshire / Hamilton Burgh Band
« on: Wednesday 09 December 09 19:07 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks to the wonderful help of Sancti, I found the graves of my great grandparents.  But this opened up a new question.  My great, great Uncle James Thomas Kane was one of those buried with them and under his name it says late Bandmaster.  Under that, Hamilton Burgh Band.  Do anyone have anything on this band?  Is it still going etc?  James Thomas Kane died aged 37 in 1921.

Anything?  Anyone? Please!

Lanarkshire / Hamilton Graves

Can anyone help me with trying to find where my relatives are buried?  I live in France but most of my relatives lived in Hamilton until the 40s, when my Grandfather moved his family to Stirling.  He was cremated so no burial site for him but how can I find out where his parents and grandparents might be buried.  Idon't even know if their graves are markes or not.

Northumberland / Sarah Cousins born c1798
« on: Sunday 25 October 09 15:07 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for the family of Sarah Cousins of Alnwick, Northumberland. Born around 1798-1800, she married Edward Kane in 1820. I lose sight of her in Sunderland in 1851. It's possible her parents are James Cousins and Isabella Storer.

Anybody else know this lady?

Monaghan / ARDLE MCKENNA AND ELIZABETH HARKINS
« on: Wednesday 21 October 09 15:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi there

I looking for the family of Ardle McKenna born around 1825 and his wife Elizabeth Harkins also born in Ireland.  Ardle moved to Stirlingshire before his children were born but I'm struggling to find any certificates, Birth, marriage or death.  He MUST have died in Scotland but maybe he married in Ireland before emigrating.  Anyone with any connections to these names, please get in touch.

Durham / GIBSON/STIENSON
« on: Monday 12 October 09 17:09 BST (UK)  »
Me again.

Another thread of mine that runs dry, to mix my metaphors, is a William Gibson, a Spiirt Merchant,  who married Ann Stienson in the 1830s and had a daughter, also, Ann.  Ann married my George Frederick Kane, so I know what happened to her.  They were married in Monkwearmouth but I know nothing of her parents.  Anyone know any Stiensons?

 ;D

many thanks

Durham / Any KANES out there?
« on: Monday 12 October 09 15:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi there

I haven't been reserching very long and just when I think I have something worked out, I hit another brick wall.  My ancestor was George Frederick Kane, born in Alnwick but brought up around many Durham areas.  Between the 1871 and 1881 census he had the good sense to move to Scotland (wee joke there).  Anyway.  The other week I was looking for help tracing his daddy Edward and, thanks to you lot, I think I have that sorted.  But GF had three brothers and two sisters, Edward, Robert, James, Sarah and Isabella.  I know a bit about Isabella becuase I have a contact researching her but of the others I know nothing.  Thanks to censuses I think I know about Robert but Sarah and especially Edward, a musician, who lived with his mum Sarah until the 1851 census but then disappears. Do you know him?  Well his decendants of course.  All the others were miners or married to miners.  Are you a Durham Kane?

Let me know

Fermanagh / Help A Newbie Day
« on: Monday 28 September 09 15:27 BST (UK)  »
I am STUCK.  I'm very new at this one one relative in particular is causing concern  :(   I have an ancestor named Sydney Thomson (a woman, born in Ireland - somewhere) around 1831.  In 1873 in Scotland she married George Graham who was born c1829 in Fermanagh.  His parents James and Jane (nee Thomson) and his siblings all moved to Scotland somewhere in the mid 1800s.  James Graham's father was George Graham born 1780ish and his mother Nancy Spiers.

My question is this, was Sydney also a local girl in Ireland or did they meet by chance in Scotland?  Did she travel with the Grahams to marry George?  Sydney's mum was a D; Johnston (Dorothea?) and her father James Thomson.  Is there anyone in Fermanagh related to any of these people who can help me shed some light?  Surely Sydney is an unusual name for the time?

Help a struggling newbie, anyone?

 ;)

Durham / Kane Family
« on: Monday 28 September 09 15:12 BST (UK)  »
I am a new researcher and really lost!!!  :'(   My great, great, great grandfather's name was Edward Kane.  On his son's death certificate he is listed as a Shoemaker.  I know absolutely nothing at all about Edward except that he married Sarah Cousins on 20 May 1820 in Alnwick and by the 1841 census, Sarah is listed as a widow (in South Shields).  I can find no death certificate.  Edward and Sarah had a son named Edward who was a musician, Robert, James and George Frederick who moved to Scotland and was my great, great grandfather, and daughters named Sarah and Isabella. I know what happened to Isabella (and GF, of course) but the rest is a mystery.

Is anyone else related to this family, can you help a newbie in need?
