Derry (Londonderry) / Lawrence Bradley/Ann Quigley in Draperstown
« on: Monday 11 November 19 20:19 GMT (UK)  »
I have been searching for my Bradleys for over 10 years and with the help of DNA, I think I have found them in Draperstown. I would love help from anyone who may know more than me or anyone who connects to this line!

I have a DNA match with 154.4 cm (no more distant then 2C2R) and my Dad's cousin matches her at 202 cm (no further than 2C1R). Based on my Dad's paternal cousin, I know she's on my paternal grandfather's line. I have been able to eliminate his father's mother's family and also his paternal grandmother, leaving his paternal grandfather. His paternal grandfather was an orphan and he has always been a massive insurmountable brick wall for me. I think I am cracking it open though.

My g-grandfather's parents married in Glasgow in Dec 1894 and my g-grandfather was born a month later in Jan, 1895. My gg-grandmother died 6 weeks later (19 years old) and the father (27 years old in Dec 1894) disappeared shortly thereafter. On the marriage cert his parents were listed as John Bradley and Ann Tweedley. I have traced every Tweedley in Scotland and every one of them leads back to a Quigley in Ireland leading me to conclude that for whatever reason, Quigleys became Tweedleys in Scotland and my gg-grandfather's parents were actually John Bradley and Ann Quigley.

When I looked closely at my DNA match mentioned above, I found her g-grandfather was Lawrence Bradley and Ann Quigley (those names are very similar to ones I am looking for!) in Draperstown. I have found other matches coming from the same couple and one from a Bradley in Draperstown from before Lawrence Bradley was born leading me to believe that this is my line. If Lawrence Bradley and Ann Quigley are my ggg-grandparents, that would make my DNA match my 2C2R, which is the most distant she can be from me and she would be my Dad's cousin's 2C1R (which the DNA supports). I have traced all the children of Lawrence Bradley and Ann Quigley except for John, William and Mary - I can't find them. William was the correct age for my gg-grandfather and my g-grandfather's name was William John. John was born 3 years earlier than the marriage cert states for his age - which is still very plausibly him.

Does anyone have any ideas for me to prove if Lawrence Bradley and Ann Quigley are my John Bradley and Ann Quigley and which son is my gg-grandfather?

Can anyone, experienced in Hungarian research, find anything on this woman? The police posted these lost pictures, and are trying to find the owners.

Cavan / 1851 census - opinion
« on: Monday 03 March 14 14:19 GMT (UK)  »
I'd like your opinion and to know what you would do.

I am helping someone do some research, and they just gave me copies of all the documents they have filed away. In the file is

1914 WWI registration (with `discharged' written across them, so the copy isn't from the original day of registration)
an 1851 census from Cavan
marriage from the 1923 which was extracted in 1956.
1885 birth from Cavan, extracted in 1925
1923 marriage, from 1923
1902 birth, from 1902
1939 death, from 1939
1927 birth, from 1927

This is obviously a family that kept their records! Would you trust the 1851 census? The census is for the mother who is mentioned on the 1885 birth, and in the 1851 census, she is 3 years old (not an uncommon name). I don't have any other documentation on her, and can't find her in the 1901 or 1911 census. I don't know her age, the age of her husband or her parents' names. So, it's near impossible for me to verify the information on the 1851 census.

The census paper is very old, but would people have been given copies of the census in 1851? Would a family seriously have kept it through everything they went through in life and carried it to Glasgow when they later moved? Why would they have kept the census, but not their birth, marriage and death records? The next date that I have for a record this family kept is 1902 (1885 birth was extracted in 1925).

If this was you, how would you proceed?

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Time period???
« on: Friday 31 January 14 18:02 GMT (UK)  »
We're trying to figure out who this is. I think I know, but I don't know if the time period fits the age this woman must be.  What time period do you think it is? Thank you!!!

If it helps, we think she's at the beach, outside the change room. I think it's a towel around her neck, and possibly she's in her bathing suit????

United States of America / Camerons in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio
« on: Sunday 20 October 13 21:26 BST (UK)  »
I don't know a lot about researching in the US, but I'm trying to help a friend. We've traced her Cameron line back to a John Cameron, who was born in 1805 in Hancock County, West Virginia and married Elizabeth Williams before having children in Augusta, Carroll County, Ohio. I assume they married in Ohio around 1831, but maybe not (the first child recorded in the family bible was born in 1833 and I know that the child born in 1834 was born in Augusta). Elizabeth Williams was from New Jersey.

According to the 1880 census, John's father was from Pennsylvania and his mother was from Ohio.

I've found other Camerons moving between Beaver, Pennsylvania; Hancock, West Virginia; and eastern Ohio (Washington and Carroll Counties). But, I can't connect this John Cameron to them, or to anyone.

I have him in the 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880 and 1885 censuses, and he died in 1895. We have his wife as well, and we've traced all the children. I know how helpful people are on this site, and I want to make sure that people don't try to find information that we already have. What we are missing is his marriage, and any information about his birth and parents.

If it helps, the children of this couple were Thomas, William J, George W, James, Susan Jane, John Derrell, Nancy Elnora, Henry Chalmer, Sarah Catherine, Mary Zerelda, Eliza Aurilda, John Willard and Oderena Elizabeth

Those of you who have more experience in the US, do you have any ideas for me? My friend's mother would really like to trace this line back to Scotland, but we're stuck at this point.

Thank you!

Lanarkshire / Newspaper Article from 1945/46
« on: Friday 27 September 13 05:53 BST (UK)  »
I am hoping someone can help me!

My Dad's uncle was a POW, held by the Japanese during WWII. When he returned home to Glasgow, he was pictured in the newspaper. I've attached the photo. We'd like the article if there was one. We don't know how to find it and we don't know the date.

It says `Copyright, Daily Record, Evening News, Sunday Mail, Glasgow' in the corner of the photo. After it ran in the paper, the family asked for a copy of the photo, and that's where this came from.

His name was William (Bill) Lindsay. He did not return immediately after WWII because of the medical care he required. According to my Dad, he possibly returned as late as the spring 1946, but he doesn't know (my Dad was 3 at the time, so his memory is fuzzy).  I don't know if he was named in the photo caption or in the article.

Can anyone help?

Thank you!

Down / Visiting Downpatrick
« on: Friday 05 July 13 17:42 BST (UK)  »
I will be visiting Downpatrick and Upper Tyrella in August to work on our family tree. Any advice for me? I want to make sure that I am as well prepared as possible.
Is there a cemetery at the RC church at 26 Tyrella Road? That church is less than 500 m from where my ancestors were 100 years ago and 60 years before that (McKay/Denvir).
Thank you for any advice or guidance!

Fermanagh / Visiting Fermanagh
« on: Friday 05 July 13 17:36 BST (UK)  »
I will visitDerrylin (and Ummera) in early August to research the Quinn/McKenna/Vaughan names for my family tree (Glassmulagh RC Church). Any advice for me?  I went on another family tree research trip once and I found that I was no where near prepared enough, and I want to make sure I've done everything that I can do to maximize my trip.

Thank you for any advice!

Australia / Where do I start?
« on: Thursday 06 December 12 20:26 GMT (UK)  »
I am completely overwhelmed by the idea of searching in Australia.  I see lots of resources, but do I have to go through them all separately?

I am trying to find someone who told the family she was from Australia, but the census records all say Canada and she lived most of her life in Glasgow.

I can't find records of her in Canada, and I can't find any transport records of her going to Britain.

Where do I start?  I have researched every other line extensively and this is the one that I have left for last.  I find research in Australia to be overwhelming.

Her name is Mary Ann McGuinness and she married in Glasgow in 1880 at the age of 18.  She and her 19 year old year husband were living alone in 1881.  I have bought all the records for her, her children and husband - hoping to find something.  I have poor law applications for her in Glasgow.  I know a lot about her and her family, but I can't find anything about her origins or her parents!

Her parents were James or John McGuinness (some records say John and some say James) and her mother was Mary Broadley or Bradley.  Her mother died before 1880 and her father died 1880-1899.

Does anyone have any ideas for me?  I've tried searching in Glasgow.  I've tried searching in Canada.  I am now left with Australia to look at.  Where do I start?
