Northumberland / John Davison-Monkseaton Mariner 1780's
« on: Saturday 11 March 17 12:39 GMT (UK)  »
Where can I find any information regarding   JOHN DAVISON Monkseaton Mariner listed as such on his dau baptism  ANN  1783 Christ Church Tynemouth and his son's death record  JOHN died 1771

I know records are kept in local Records Offices from the mid 1800's. In the programme--WDYTYA
With Cheryl featuring  ( -admittedly ) a MASTER MARINER they went to a building overlooking North Shields, to look into this fact. Was it just for the view or are records held there?
I would expect he sailed out of North Shields as I doubt there would be anything relevant at Monkseaton.
I cannot find a marriage for him in the Bishop's Transcripts, I am having difficulty reading them.
Any help would be gratefully received.

JOHN BELL was a tailor married to MARGARET YOUENS  around 1765.
Only surviving children appear to be ELIZABETH born 1772 and a MARY 1780
ELIZABETH went on to marry a mariner from Tynemouth--- JOHN TURNBULL  1808
Any interest????

Northumberland / YOUENS, around 1744 NORTH SHIELDS. NORTHUMBERLAND
« on: Monday 02 March 15 02:32 GMT (UK)  »
This is the earliest name I have on my maternal side.
MARGARET YOUENS born around 1744 married a JOHN BELL   tailor of NORTH SHIELDS.
NO marriage found yet nor where MARGARET hailed from. Don't suppose it was far away.

IS YOUENS a recognised surname or do you think it could be a mis spelling of EWENS???

The earliests MURDY I have is     HENRY supposedly of the parish of WARKWORTH. around 1730's
Fathered a child( Mary ) at Woodhorn  1739.
Gravitated north to NORHAM where sons ROBERT, HENRY and EDWARD (1755) where born also dau. Diana
My line, EDWARD married an ELIZABETH MORTON, possibly from BELFORD.
Anyone else interested in this surname????--- no I thought as much--- as rare as hens teeth we are!

Northumberland / Scottish Naming patterns
« on: Sunday 10 February 13 20:04 GMT (UK)  »
Dear Learned Folk of Roots chat.
I would like your thoughts on the following.----Father -Son relationship!
Iam posting on the Northumberland site as confirmation of some births are in North Northumberland.
My 2xGt.Grandfather. Thomas Murdy is the problem.   I cannot find a birth for him despite searching for many years.
He marries in Bishopwearmouth in 1819 (stating of this parish).  and dies in County Durham in 1838
( before the first census).Age given then as 40 .  wife is believed to be around 19 at time of marriage and the above would probably make him around 21. That seems reasonable.

He is found in the village of Hetton-le-Hole Co.Durham producing a large family.
Also in this village are 2 other fellows producing large families , with the same name(MURDY) , quite an uncommon name and one older fellow Edward Murdy. 1755- 1825 born Norham
Both the other fellows state on census they were born in Norhamshire. So this confirms them as Edward,s sons.no births found for these 2 either.

Thomas appears to be using the Scottish naming pattern(although the other 2 don,t appear to be)
Would this be sufficient evidence to accept Thomas as Edwards son?
Herewith the family:::
First child--Edward
Second--Robert( confirmed as wife,s father)
Third---Thomas
First daughter---(wife,s mother,s name-confirmed---only daughter.)

Now next son is called William---is there any significance  attached to the 4th Son?
This is a name found in the wider MURDY family(eg.Edward,s children and his brother,s children)
The same applies to the 5th son----John. ---any significance to the 5th son?.
When we come to the   6th son, Henry is the name. This is the name of Edward,s father( confirmed).
He is actually Henry Dowell, this is the Mother,s maiden name. So that could mean he is called after his Gt.Grandfather!
The 7th son is Benjamin--- never heard of in the family before!    maybe they just liked it!

I have been unable to find a marriage for Edward and Elizabeth(Morton), having searched for years but as they use a chapel in Berwick for a christening of a son and to record the death of another I suspect they are Presbyterian,s.
Your thoughts on the above would be appreciated.
Regards,
Bigooms.

Dumfriesshire / Millenium Files
« on: Sunday 13 January 13 20:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Folks,
Can someone tell me abot Millenium Files?    I found reference to them on Ancestry in regard to confirming a Birth in Scotland (1700+).
Also where would I find.   "UK Probate Records" relating to Scotland, on land rather than paying a large fee to Ancestry? would it be in the National Archives in Edinburgh?
Thanking you,
BigOoms.
