Buckinghamshire / Fountain family in Buckinghamshire?
« on: Tuesday 29 December 20 18:44 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Have a complicated search.

I match a Stevens [my mother's unmarried name] but we don't appear to be directly connected. However, my mother descended from Fountains on one side of her tree, and my distant Stevens cousin '1' has Fountains in her tree.

Both my (mum's) Fountains & my cousin's had ancestors in Holborn, London; but my cousin's Fountains hail from Denham in Buckinghamshire, while a different dna-match cousin '2' of mine has Fountains also in Buckinghamshire, about 25 miles north of Denham.

So I was wondering if there is common ancestry here? But I can't get back beyond ancestors who are already known, so it's a brick wall - can anyone help please?

Cousin '1's earliest Fountain is:-

Edward Fountain snr bc 1770 - d.1861 born in Holborn, married
Sarah Weatherby, 1770-1822, Holborn.

son

Edward Fountain, 1789-, b. Denham Bucks, married
Harriet Morten, 1789-, Denham Bucks.

------------------------------------------

The Fountains in my cousin '2's tree are located at Stoke Hammond & Cheddington, approximately 25 miles from Denham & their age dates range from about 1629 to 1777, so slightly earlier than cousin '1'.

I'm wondering if these Denham - Stoke Hammond Fountains were related at an earlier stage?

Many thanks :)

Armed Forces / Recruitment pre WW1 ?
« on: Thursday 11 June 20 17:29 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

My grandfather was a 'boy soldier', Arthur Kemp 1870-1944, so he would have enlisted circa 1885. He was born in Hammermith, Northwest London UK, but is associated with Bromley Kent, which is where he lived, & passed away in 1944.

I thought that his Kent location was due to his barracks being there. But why would someone recruited in NW London be sent to Kent, I presumed that recruitment was local to area before the Great War?

No-one knows what regiment he was in, there is no information at all about that - only family anecdotes to go by.

Thanks

Armed Forces / George HUNT b. 1831, Barnet, Herts.

Hi,

This post follows on from an older one at:-

https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=813271.72

Now have a definite name and date - what is my best way forward for seeing if the below-named served in the forces please?

George HUNT, born 1831 in Barnet, Hertfordshire.

My great grandmother Louisa Mary Powell [1859–1932] has a George Hunt 'soldier' listed as her father on her 1883 marriage certificate, she was born out of wedlock. Have been researching George Hunt ever since. But now I have a half-cousin dna match to a family whose tree contains a George Hunt born 1831. He disappears from the census after 1841 so I can't help wondering if he joined the army after this time? In 1851 he would have been 19 or 20.

How can I find out, please?

Many thanks.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Puntdnal k13?
« on: Tuesday 09 July 19 19:22 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Been told GEDmatch has a few minor matches with someone I sent my GEDmatch number to.

They kindly looked at various different admixture calculators,, using my number, and found some Indian [South Asian] markers on something called 'puntdnal k13'.

What does this mean, & how can I follow through to do my own search at puntdnal k13 please?

Many thanks.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / DNA Results In! :-o
« on: Sunday 30 June 19 16:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

My results arrived :-o

Have been following a POWELL surname on my paternal side (gtx3 grandfather) thinking there was a London Romany connection but there does not appear to be - the results suggest that surname is principally of Welsh origin; interesting also, the Cornish result, since my surname KEMP is recorded in Cornwall going back to medieval times: intriguing.

Where do I go from here please?

Thanks :)

Armed Forces / HUNT, George - soldier born 1841
« on: Wednesday 22 May 19 19:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Have the transcript of a George HUNT, born 1841 in Bermondsey, Surrey UK. In 1911 he is living in Camberwell (London) as an army pensioner. His wife is probably one Emily Harriett (nee AUSTIN) born 1846, Chichester, Sussex.

How can I find out which army unit George was in please?

George could be my maternal-side great grandfather.

Many thanks :)

Travelling People / George POWELL - descendants UK?
« on: Tuesday 21 August 18 02:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

George POWELL was known as 'King of the Gypsies' in south London, he died circa 1704-6 and was buried in St Mary's Churchyard [Newington], Southwark. George was associated with the Old Kent Road area and a road known as Bird Cage Alley which was in the Parish of St. George the Martyr. I have also come across a 'hawker' James POWELL, born 1853, Southwark, St George Martyr, London - so this looks like a descendant of George living in the same parish, fifty years on.

Does anyone have anything more on the Southwark POWELL surname please?

Thank you :)

Perthshire / Murray Clan at Fortingall?
« on: Sunday 08 September 13 17:22 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I found the following reference to 'the Earl of Dysart , a title in the peerage of Scotland first conferred on William Murray, the son of William Murray (snr), rector of Dysart (Fifeshire), a younger son of the Murray Family, Woodend, Perthshire'.

http://www.electricscotland.com/history/nation/dysart.htm

Woodend is about a mile west of Fortingall village and the largest town is Aberfeldy further east. But I can see no sign of the Murray residence in this area, Glen Lyon. Can anybody help please?

Many thanks,

Ric

« on: Monday 10 May 10 21:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I have the beginnings of a London / Middlesex / Hampstead POWELL family tree and wondered if there were any branches out there please? Other possibly related family names are HOBBS and TOOMY [or TOOMEY]. There are several females associated with the laundry trade and males whose profession is 'Horse Keeper'.

Thomas POWELL b.c? mar Charlotte (surname?) b.c. 1801
Henry b.c. 1829
Charlotte b.c. 1835
Emma b.c. 1837
Louisa b.c. 1841

---------------------

Louisa POWELL mar/unmar? George HUNT (?) b.c 1832
Louisa Mary b.c. 1859

---------------------------

John INNELL b.c. 1860 mar [1883] Louisa Mary POWELL ...
~ and thus begins INNELL line.

---------------------------------------

Any help greatly appreciated!

Many thanks,

Ric
