Dorset / Pubs in Weymouth 1960s pictures
« on: Saturday 08 November 14 14:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,
I run the pub history site, and have received a number of mainly 1960s Devenish pubs to add to the pages. Two I am currently unsure about are the Railway Station Hotel, and also  the 'older' picture I have added as the Kings Arms. There will be about 30 pictures to add in total, and many are named. I just don't recognise some of these when comparing with some of the modern pictures. All suggestions welcome.

ps I will add a quick Weymouth 1911 census pub crawl later.

Suffolk / Mary Stearne born 1830 in Elmsett
« on: Friday 22 March 13 19:32 GMT (UK)  »
Dear all,
I have been contacted by a lady in France who has a photograph of a Mary Stearne, born about 1830 in Elmsett. This is from a family diary with additional information recorded as follows:
Mary the daughter of Thomas and Mary Stearn was born on the 20th of December 1830 about five minutes before nine o’clcock in the morning --
Sarah daughter of the same parents was born on the 26th of January 1833 about five minutes before ten o’clock at night –
A stillborn female child of the same parents born April 10th 1838 about 10 o’clock in the morning.
The above named child Sarah Prudence Stearn breathed her last June 12th 1841about 4 o’clock in the morning at the age of nine years and about 4 months after a fortnights illness chiefly in the head and affected the brain.
July 29th 1843 Thomas Stearn father of the above children breathed his last about 10 minutes past 3 o’clock on Saturday afternoon after an affliction of five months borne I hope I may say with patience and resignation to the will of Heaven and in hope of a blessed resurrection. Aged 53 years.
                                                                                                                                                           Mary Stearn

Is this of any interest to any Stearne researchers. I have yet to research her, but she appears to be a housekeeper in 1871 at the Hall, Elmsett with her uncle Patrick, farmer.
She contacted me after reading Ray Longs database details.

Oxfordshire / Straith, Oxfordshire
« on: Tuesday 25 December 12 22:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,
I am helping out a family member who has  a Richard Ilsley born about 1828 in a place called Straith, Oxfordshire. This detail is from the 1851 census entry where he is married to Martha. The census entry is very clearly written.
Does anyone have any idea where this [Straith] could be a reference to. A search on google shows little suggestion, as does the Oxford genuki site.

Thanks

Dumfriesshire / McQueen in Scotland & Somerset
« on: Saturday 03 November 12 00:29 GMT (UK)  »
All,
I am doing some research for a loved mother in law (I bet that not may people can say that!). She is nearing 80, and I am putting some resources together for a birthday present. She has been collecting family history for most of her life, and has done an amazing job without the internet; I can usually do it quicker with this resource.
We have the Pool family, largely in Annan, Dumfries, who marry into the McQueen family. The McQueens ran fisheries in Abercorn and Dornock. This is actually the easy part, and I can find records from 1841 onwards quite easily. I have also found the relevant marriages and some borths through the Scotland site. It is a bit expensive to search, but Ancestry also have transcriptions to help in the initial search.

I also have a suggestion that the McQueen family who spend most of their lives in the East of London (Poplar & the likes) who end up in Somerset are possibly linked to this Scottish lineage. I doubt it very much unless we go back hundreds of years.

Can anyone suggest any ideas on this?

Thanks
Kevan

Dumfriesshire / Pool in Annan, Dumfries
« on: Friday 02 November 12 01:23 GMT (UK)  »
All,
I have been researching the Pool, in Annan, Dumfries and their links to the McQueen family. There is now a page of the many Pool families, well some of them, but more to be added at:

http://pubshistory.com/Scotland/Annan/index.shtml

If you have additional detail, it is always of interest.

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / London pubs
« on: Friday 11 May 12 00:40 BST (UK)  »
All,
I am attempting to update the pubs history site with listings by postcode, rather tham by bizarre parish listings (using the census to pinpoint an address).
This is a plea for any older yellow pages listings, either in scanned format - or if you have old Yellow Pages from the 1990's, 1980's or the 1970's or earlier.
    Or any other suggestions.
I have a number of sites which cover this, but the main being http://deadpubs.co.uk

Thanks

Suffolk / Suffolk Pubs history & new census
« on: Friday 07 January 11 00:46 GMT (UK)  »
All,
I have the best historical pubs site in the South of England ( well, I reckon so); which includes most Suffolk Pubs and loads more too. Also recently a few new census were added, along with the previous 1841 census for Essex & Suffolk. Plus additions to parts of Samford for 1844.
Next is the Cosford database, if I do not meet too much opposition in making this available again in a reasonable time frame. i.e, now, rather than several years down the line. Ray Long was my fourth cousin.

My sites are updated daily, and more detail is always welcome. Updated more regularly than your average site.

Sussex / Kicking Donkey, Ashford area
« on: Sunday 01 March 09 00:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hello All,
I am  looking for help, in possible, recognising a Pub in the early 20th century, in the Ashford area. I have worked through the entire Ashford 1901 census, which lists most Pubs and Beer Houses by name; and it is therefore either built later, or in another part of Kent.
There is a copy of the Pub here http://kentvillages.com/Ashford/KickingDonkey.shtml; with some extra details.
Many thanks if anyone can help.
