Lancashire / Sentencing for manslaughter?
« on: Monday 30 May 22 13:02 BST (UK) »
Hi
I'm trying to figure out when someone would have been released from prison.
James Fitzpatrick was convicted of manslaughter in Prescot in 1881. Having kicked his wife Margaret Black to death on the doorstep of their home.
He was given a 15 year sentence of manslaughter and avoided hanging because he was deemed to be intoxicated and therefore it wasn't pre meditated.
I found him in prison still in the 1891 census 10 years later in Gillingham Kent.
I'm trying to find out if back then was it possible for prisoners to be released early as they are now for good behaviour?
I ask because I can't find any release date for him after 15 years nor can I find him in the 1901 census, no death either nor an emigration record.
I can find no trace of him after 1891.
Thanks
Sammy.
