Staffordshire / Parents of Rev Thomas Moss b c1739
« on: Sunday 04 October 15 21:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,
I am searching for the parents of the Rev Thomas Moss who wrote the Beggars Petition.  I am related through his sister Katherine who married Joseph Taylor.  According to the Cambridge University records, Thomas' father is Francis Moss, a chandler at Wolverhampton.  This is where I get stuck.  There is no record of Thomas or Katherine births.  There is no will in the NAA website for Francis Moss who possibly died in 1764.  Thomas will was very newsworthy and mentions a marriage settlement document for his sister's marriage to Joseph Taylor in 1767 in Shropshire.
I would like help with 1. the baptisms of Rev Thomas Moss and sister Katherine; 2. Francis Moss marriage; 3. Where I can find Francis Moss will or other information about him ? and 4. Where I can find the marriage settlement document for Katherine?
Your assistance will be greatly appreciated as I live in Australia.
Thank you in advance
Kris

Kent Completed Lookup Requests / GOLDER,Lewis born 1858 Thanet Kent
« on: Saturday 22 September 12 03:05 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I am trying to find the marriage of Lewis Golder/Goulder born 1858 Thanet Kent to Hannah ? born in Deal Kent.   Sometime between 1877 and 1886.  The 1911 census says they had been married for 26 years. I have checked the census for 1881 and cannot locate him.  The only marriage I can find for a Lewis Goulder/Golder is in 1883 to an Elizabeth Ann Evans but I cannot find a birth for this Elizabeth in Deal Kent,  If I can find out Hannah's surname, I may be able to track their children. In the 1891 census I have children born to him, Joseph 1877 born London, Agnes 1881 born Deal Kent, Jessie Born 1883 in Deal Kent but no record of their births under Goulder/Golder. The other child Elsie born 1886 was registered under Golder.

Any help to find out who Lewis Golder/Goulder married and how to find the childrens birth names would be greatly appreciated. ;)

Thank you

Kris

Derbyshire / Birds family of Bakewell, Derbyshire
« on: Sunday 25 December 11 01:44 GMT (UK)  »
Merry Christmas to all the lovely Rootschat helpers. :-*

I am trying to find evidence of the origins of the Birds family at Bakewell Derbyshire.  The first Birds that I have from a researcher is William Birds who died around 1747/1748 and his wife Mary (possibly Cartledge) who died around 1746/1747.  They had a son Thomas born 22 Mar 1713 who married Mary Gilbert born 30 Apr 1726.  Their son David Birds born 8 Mar 1758 married(no record)  Catharine Moss (not sure of surname) and went to live in Shropshire.  I am descended from this line.

I have tried everything to find BDMs to confirm some of the earlier family records and to go back further.  After 1792 I have a pretty good picture of the family in Shropshire and from newspaper articles and census records I have found that these people were wealthy.  2 went to Cambridge in the early 1800s and 2 went to Oxford in the later 1800s and one youngster was in the East India Company as a lieutenant (died in India at 20).  Also the amounts in the wills were in excess of £10,000.

One son of Thomas Birds and Mary Gilbert, Thomas Birds born 1752 lived at Eyam and had a son Thomas who died in 1829 at Eyam leaving a large collection of fossils that were gathered by him and his predecessors from the lead mines and from Ireland.

So you can see why I am curious and I have not found any directories to locate where they lived in Eyam or Bakewell.

Any advice or assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Yours gratefully
Kris Wood

London and Middlesex / Joseph WOOD born 1822/1825 London
« on: Friday 16 September 11 23:06 BST (UK)  »
I would like some help and advice please on how I may find the parents of Joseph Wood.  I know he was born in London because it is on his death certificate and son George Arthur birth certificate. Death certificate says aged 70 in 1895 but death notice says aged 73 which looks about right as he was 35 when George Arthur born in 1857.  His parents were supposedly Charles (a mason) and Mary as indicated on his death certificate but the informant was his son-in-law so it is suspect. There is one reference in the IGI of a Charles Wood marrying Mary Barnett.  Possibly these were his parents.  The father could be correct as he named the first son Charles, but his first daughter was named Louisa and second daughter Victoria.  His wife Elizabeth's mother was Susan. He may have arrived in South Australia on the 'Richardson' from Swansea in 1848.  He was a carpenter so maybe he was in a guild in London or maybe his father was.  I have checked the 1841 census for any Joseph Wood around this age but there are so many and a quite a few were not living with their parents.  The Wood family were Methodist in Australia but for how far back this goes is not known.

Your help and advice is very welcome for me to get over this brick wall.
Thank you in advance  :D

Sussex Lookup Requests / 1841 census Ickelsham / Udimore for Hockham
« on: Saturday 03 June 06 12:43 BST (UK)  »
I would be grateful if someone could look up the 1841 census records for Icklesham and Udimore for the surname Hockham.  It was changed to Hockam in Australia.  I cannot find the origins of my gt gt grandfather Thomas Hockam who was possibly from either of these villages.  Although he arrived in Sydney in 1839 there may have been some of his relatives still living in the area.  There is nothing in the IGI for his birth around 1809 and his parents were supposedly William and Elizabeth.
Thank you in advance for your assistance

Cheshire Completed Lookup Requests / 1861 Cheshire Lookup for John Birds Wall
« on: Sunday 10 July 05 00:02 BST (UK)  »
In February Peter Bennett looked up the 1861 census for William J Wall at Marine Terrace, Liscard for his birthplace.  I would be grateful if I could have the full details of the census as I would like to know if John Birds Wall was living there at the time before he came to Australia.  He married in Victoria in 1862 and I cant pinpoint which ship he arrived on.  It might help to know if he was still in Cheshire in 1862.
Thanks muchly
Kris
