Ireland / Records of Hearings in Chancery & Incumbered Estates
« on: Friday 23 January 15 04:20 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching my 3x Gr Grandfather, John Bateman, Esq. of Oak Park, Tralee, co. Kerry who was the defendent in several hearings in Chancery (1843-1844) and in the Incumbered Estates Courts (ca. 1850-1863).   Does anyone know if it is possible to obtain copies of the court proceedings/arguments?  I have found various notices in Irish newspapers of the hearings and would like to see the actual proceedings, but am not sure where to look.   Tom

United States of America / John Bateman, teacher, in Wilcox co., Alabama 1860 Census
« on: Friday 23 January 15 03:01 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for any information about John Bateman who appears in the 1860 Federal census in East Division, Wilcox County, Alabama (Post office: Rehoboth).  He is living in the home of John Celery (Jno. Celery in the census) and he is listed as a teacher, age 35, born in Ireland.   If he was a teacher, would there be any employment records in the state archives related to his employment?   Tom

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Martha Kingsbury Hemingway, b. abt 1823/24, Dewsbury
« on: Thursday 04 December 14 00:40 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for information on birth/baptism of Martha Kingsbury Hemingway, likely the daughter of George Hemingway and Mary Ann Parr.   MKH was born about 1823-1824 in Dewsbury according to later census data but I cannot find her baptism on Ancestry, Familysearch or FreeREG.   Martha Kingsbury Hemingway married John Porritt on 25 Dec 1842 at Tong, St. James, with father's name George on the parish marriage record.   Parents probably George Hemingway and Mary Ann Parr, who were married 26 Apr 1818 in Dewsbury, All Saints. Mary Ann Parr was daughter of William Parr and Martha Kingsbury, baptised 26 Jun 1795 in Dewsbury, All Saints.   Birthdate and parents of George Hemingway are unknown although 1841 census gives his age as 45 so likely born about 1795 +/- 2 yrs.   George Hemingway and Mary Ann Parr may have had a second daughter, Lydia Ann Hemingway, who married James Hey on 2 Jan 1847 at Dewsbury with father's name George Hemingway on parish marriage record.  According to census records, Lydia Ann was born about 1828 in Dewsbury, however I also cannot find her baptism record.  Any help much appreciated!  Tom

England / Age of Apprenticeship
« on: Wednesday 02 May 12 23:22 BST (UK)  »
Can someone help me guess at the age of a child/youth at time of apprentice indenture?    My general question is what was the typical age that a child became an apprentice and paid the indenture for the apprenticeship?    More specifically, I have the record of a John Slaney, apprentice to Wm Wainwright, surgeon of Dudley, Wo. in the Register of Duties Paid for Apprentices Indenture for the date of 21 June 1744.   What would his age likely have been in 1744?
I'm guessing that he was likely about 14-19 yrs old making his birth date about 1725-1730 - is this realistic?

There is another entry in the Register of Duties Paid for Apprentices Indenture in 23 Feb 1757 for a James Adams apprentice to John Slaney, apothecary, of Walsall, Staff.   I'm trying to make the connection between the two John Slaney's and thinking that the John Slaney the surgeon's apprentice in 1744 became the John Slaney, apothecary in 1757.

Any help with more information about apprentices is much appreciated!

I found a record on FreeREG of a marriage of Thomas Brewster, widower, and Elizabeth Slaney, spinster, 23 Jun 1783, St. Michaels, Penkridge but the transcription lacked the details of home parish, names of parents and witnesses if any.   This marriage does not appear on searches of the IGI, nor in Pallots.   If some kind soul could look at the parish register to see if there is any additional information it would be most helpful.

Canada / Marriage lookup ca. 1870 Ottawa/Hull area
« on: Thursday 20 October 11 04:55 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for the marriage record of Edwin Porritt and Catherine Wiley who were married in July 1870 or July 1871, most likely in the Hull or Ottawa area.   In the 1871 census of Canada they reside in the Township of Hull and were married in July within the preceding 12 months.    In later census returns Catherine's birthplace is listed as Ottawa so it is possible they married there rather than in Hull.    Edwin is listed as Church of England and Catherine is listed as Catholic, so not sure in which church they married or if it was a civil marriage.   Also looking for birth, baptism for Catherine Wiley and names of her parents.    In the 1871 census, a Mary Wiley, age 49, widow, was living with them so I speculate this could have been Catherine's mother but this is not confirmed.   Any help much appreciated!
