« on: Tuesday 23 October 07 10:20 BST (UK)  »
Good morning!I have offered to do some research for my stepsons...their grandad was born in India in 1938 and I have absolutely no idea where to start!
I am a member of ancestry but can't find birth records in the Indian army section...apart from going to Kew, I am unsure how to proceed

His name was Adrian Bernard St.John Wilson born Dehradun in 1938
His Dad was Alexander Bernard born W Derby (Liverpool) in 1902
Can anyone start me off on my 'road to Mandalay!!???'

Devon Lookup Requests / ANDREWS family help please!
« on: Tuesday 17 July 07 10:20 BST (UK)  »
I have obtained the birth certificate of Nicholas George Andrews born 1857 to a Thomas and Elizabeth . They lived at Tormanham Devon ( now part of Torquay)which all fits perfectly.

The problem is The mothers name on the certificate states Elizabeth Andrews formally Winsor.
So I looked under Winsor and Andrews for a marriage some years before 1857. I used ancestry and Free BDM

I cant seem to find such an event. I can find a Thomas marriage to an Elizabeth Vine in Stoke Damerel 1851 which sort of fits but it’s a Vine!!

There are a few Elizabeth Winsor’s but none married to an Andrews.
The key thing is the certificate which indicates Andrews.

Using Free BDM I have found I have 3 possibilities of Elizabeth and 4 Thomas but no real links

Stumped.

Family History Beginners Board / Records from 1901 on
« on: Thursday 25 May 06 13:15 BST (UK)  »
Good afternoon,
I'm sorry if I'm asking a silly question but I subscribe to Ancestry.co.uk
and am looking for births marriages and deaths after 1901.
For example,I am trying to find my Dad's uncles' death.I know he was alive in 1916 because his son was killed in action and he's mentioned
on the Commonwealth war graves site as being the father (and not the late father)
He was born in 1868 so into the search boxes I put 'lived between 1916 and 1968' hoping it will find anyone of that name between 1916 and 1968.It comes up with entries between 1984 and 2004 but nothing between 1916 and 1968.
I don't really want to trawl through all the books quarter by quarter
but it looks as though I'll have to.

Thanks in advance

Herefordshire Lookup Requests / Tracking my Dad's family
« on: Friday 12 May 06 14:28 BST (UK)  »
My Dad ,George Llewelyn Samuel Burrows ,was born In Bromsash near Hereford in 1906.He died when I was 14 and,to be honest,we didn't talk much.
I am trying to track the family's movements between 1906 and 1940 when he married my Mum in Bromley,Kent.
He was a radio operator for the Metropolitan Police on their marriage cert.that's all I know
The next census isn't out until 2011,of course, and no-one in my family knows where they were..I have no idea whatsoever what school he went to.
My grandfather ,George Frederick, veered from one occupation to another(gardener, asylum attendant, groom, mechanic, you name it!) so he wouldn't be aligned with any professional organisation or society and my grandma (Jane nee Rosser)probably went back to being a governess or a teacher..it's just frustrating that I can't account for their movements (Officer) for nearly 35 years
Any ideas what I can do?
Apart from Friends Reunited (which would be useless anyway 'cos my Dad would be 100 in August)is there a register of pupils names to schools anywhere?
Thanks

Wiltshire Completed Lookup Requests / Mary Lewis nee Higgins,Roril (?) Wiltshire
« on: Wednesday 26 April 06 08:54 BST (UK)  »
Greetings!
My GG  grandmother ,Mary Lewis, was married to James Lewis (b.1806 Lanbbo Copsenny(?),Monmouthshire)
She is entered in the English 1851 Census as living in Garway,Herefordshire, with James and 7 of her children....Sarah
Lewis,(born 1837,Llanvaply,Mon.)my Great grandmother ,not there, presumably, at 15, working in service or the like...

It says that Mary was born in Roril,Wiltshire in 1809.Having looked at the original transcript,I have to say,it looks like Keril
Their son,Richard born Lanrassy,1843 has the middle name of Higgins so I assume  (unwisely?)that his Mum's maiden name
was Higgins. The name is used later down the line with one of Sarah's sons Richard Higgins Lewis Burrows (born about 1868)

Are there any Wiltshire carrot crunchers/buffs out there who know the village name or the Higgins family?
I can't find James and Mary's marriage anywhere either..I've tried Pallots but drawn a blank. ???

Thanks in advance

Suffolk Completed Lookup Requests / BURROWS or BURROUGHS Melton/Woodbridge???
« on: Thursday 06 April 06 15:59 BST (UK)  »
I am baffled... ???I am sure that I've found my great great great grandfather (John Burrows) born Woodbridge,Suffolk and married to Susannah Wolton(married in Newbourn 8/11/ 1791)
Their son was James Wolton Burrows christened St.Mary's Woodbridge 18/7/1798 (my gg granddad)

I seem to remember that there was a connection with the village of Melton not only with Susannah but also with the Burrows family.

Not 100% sure when John was born (1768?)but I think his parents were Philip and Elizabeth (nee Cotterel?)m.1756
I also think he had two brothers,Philip and Thomas and possibly two sisters Sarah and Anne..just surmising

In trying to go back another generation,I can only find Philip BURROUGHS from Melton...knowing the trend of naming the first son after Dad...could there have been a family disagreement at sometime or was the family sick of people spelling their name the other way all the time?!!...if you're a Burrows or a Burroughs, you'll know what I mean!

Please bear with me as I am in new territory.Did Church records(I mean the full records, not the ones on-line)have the partners/parents ages/DOB or origin?
I am hoping to visit Woodbridge soon...does anyone know if church records are available to Joe Public or is it just the 'Who do you think you are ' people that are allowed.
Thanks  ;D

« on: Monday 13 March 06 21:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,I am helping a colleague find his roots and his great granddad was John Dunster born around 1827 in Sunninghill
We have scoured church records for baptism details for his parents' details but to no avail. We have his marriage to Martha b.1829 and the family from the 1861 census. They have three children,John Thomas who would be about 16,Martha about 4 and Emily just a baby at that point ,living in Southwark but in the 1871 census,John and the children are all gone and Martha is living with two 'new' sons,Charles and Ernest(my friend's grandad)
We can't find any of the deaths...HELP!!
Thanks in advance
