South Africa / Walter Smith Durban
« on: Tuesday 23 June 20 20:22 BST (UK)  »
Trying to trace a couple who emigrated from Buckie, Scotland to Durban, South Africa. Their names are Walter McGeorge Smith (born 25 November 1894) and Williamina Thomson (born 6 October 1896). They had a daughter Mary (1919-1970) and son born in 1922, both in Scotland. A newspaper excerpt dated 1931 tells me they were in South Africa by then, so it's possible they had more children.

Ideally I'm trying to find when the couple died and if they had any more family.

I'm still relatively new to navigating South African records but I have checked the Deceased Estate Files all to no avail. I did find a baptism record for their son's daughter dated 1947, and it disclosed the name of his wife. There's also a Passenger List recording their daughter Mary who returned to Scotland from Durban in 1955. Unfortunately I don't know if they are still living or not. I haven't been able to find any more records through Ancestry.

Any help would be vastly appreciated.

Best,

Greg

Banffshire / Murrays of Buckie
« on: Thursday 07 December 17 17:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Hoping someone can give me a bit of a hand here as I've hit a brick wall with this family.

I have a couple, John Cowie Murray and Jessie Ann Cowie, who married in 1910 and had the following children:

Janet Coull Murray (b.1912)
Margaret Murray (b.1914)
Jessie Ann Murray (b.1916 d.1979)
John Murray (b.1919)
Easter Murray (b.1924 d.1951)

It seems that the parents separated (but did not divorce), and John emigrated to Vancouver where he passed away in 1962. Jessie Ann died in 1968 at Edinburgh. I've successfully found two children (Jessie Ann and Easter), but I'm at a complete loss with the others. I think it's quite possible the other three children emigrated, but with a name like Murray it's quite difficult to say.

Any help would be much appreciated,

Greg

Canada / Reid/Reaich Family
« on: Friday 28 April 17 11:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm trying to find more information on a family that emigrated from Buckie, Scotland to Winnipeg in the 1910s.

William Alexander Reid was born on 5th June 1889 at Buckie to William Reid and Ann Farquhar.

His wife, Maggie Reaich, was born on 1st January 1889 at Buckie to William Reaich and Jane Murray. William and Maggie (or Margaret) were married at Buckie on 25th July 1915, although Maggie had been out to Canada beforehand. Maggie's two siblings, Isabella and James, both emigrated.

I have searched the available databases offering BMD records for the Manitoba region and have an Ancestry subscription all to no avail when trying to trace when they died. I have been able to find them in the 1916 and 1921 census of Canada, where they have two children, M (b.1915) and W (b.1917). They were living in Winnipeg at the time.

If anyone would be able to offer any assistance it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Greg

Dublin / George and Kitty Thain
« on: Wednesday 25 May 16 17:56 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Looking for information on George Thain and Kitty Martin. George was born on 24th February 1896 to George Thain and Annie Crockett or Geddes in Portgordon, Scotland. He married Kitty on 5th August 1919 in the same place and I know they went out to Dublin at some point afterwards. George died on 12th June 1955, but I have no idea what happened to Kitty, or if they had any family or not. I'm not even sure if Kitty's birth name was actually 'Kitty', because I haven't been able to find any of her details (her mother is listed as Kitty (deceased) on the marriage certificate)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I believe they may have had family out there.

Lincolnshire / Diamond Wedding Anniversary
« on: Sunday 22 May 16 23:03 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me here. I am looking for a newspaper entry for a Scunthorpe couple who celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary back in 2009. I have looked through the Scunthorpe Telegraph (which I believe is where I found it) all to no avail. I'm not sure if it has been archived, if it's in another newspaper or if I'm just simply not looking hard enough. One thing I can tell you is that the husband was Ernest Geddes, known as Ernie. He passed away in 2012. His wife is still living so I cannot disclose her name.

Does anyone know of any newspapers/archives that I would be able to search through?

Many thanks in advance,

Greg

Banffshire / Helen Thomson (m.s. Murray) of Buckie
« on: Sunday 02 August 15 16:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm trying to find more information on a woman called Helen Murray.

Helen was born on 8th January 1893 at 13 Cluny Terrace, Buckie to John Murray and Isabella Cowie. She married George Thomson on 17th December 1915 at the Parish Church in Buckie. George was residing at 1 Mid Street in Buckie at the time; this was a big family house so I'm assuming they both lived there for a short time.

I was able to find George's death but I found nothing for Helen. George died on 28th February 1929 at the Royal Naval Hospital in Chatham, Kent. I don't know if they had any children or not (I did search for births in the Buckie area but all to no avail).

As it turns out George's sister Helen 'Nellie' Thomson (1891-1972) married Helen's brother James Murray (1890-1964) so I have their details in my tree. As far as I know 1 Mid Street was passed down to Nellie and her husband James. I have no clue if Helen Murray perhaps lived there as a widow.

Nellie Thomson was known as 'Nellie Law', Law being the tee-name for the Thomson family. My grandfather who knew Nellie Law personally said that she had relatives in Australia so it's possible that it may have been her sister-in-law Helen Murray.

I'd just like to know her whereabouts and when she died.

Thanks,

Greg

Ross & Cromarty / Crocketts of Stornoway
« on: Monday 20 July 15 19:10 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm researching the Crockett family and I seem to have hit a brick wall. I'm trying to find information on two siblings, Jessie and William Crockett.

Jessie was born on 28th October 1892 at Laxdale, Stornoway and William was born on 3rd October 1898 at 48 Bayhead Street, Stornoway. Their parents were James Crockett and Annie Graham; James' family were originally from Lossiemouth.

I have information on all of the other children (Nellie Ann, Catherine Mary, James, Malcolm and Catherine Mary (named after older sister)), but I can't seem to find details for William and Jessie. I know that their brother, Malcolm, was killed in WW1 and their sister Catherine emigrated to America. Crockett is a relatively unusual name in the Stornoway area which is why I was surprised I couldn't find anything. I do know William fought in the war and when Malcolm died references were made to his family when recorded in the 1901 census.

I'd be grateful to anyone who could help me out as it seems likely that William and Jessie emigrated.

Thanks,

Greg

Down / James Thomson - Death Date
« on: Monday 22 September 14 11:48 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm trying to find a relative of mine named James Thomson. He was born in Buckie on 28th June 1893 to George Thomson and Helen Cowie, and until today I didn't realise that he lived over in Northern Ireland.

I found a Royal Navy record stating his usual address as Harbour Road, Kilkeel. The only downside was that it didn't give me any details of his family, so I'm afraid I don't know if he married or ever had any children.

I was wondering if someone could help me in finding his death. I don't know for definite that he died in Northern Ireland though it certainly is a possibility seeing as he was living in Kilkeel in the 1920s.

Thanks in advance,

Greg

Banffshire / Reaich of Buckie, Banffshire
« on: Sunday 06 July 14 12:36 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm trying to find out the whereabouts of my relative, Joseph Reaich. He was born on 13th December 1898 at 28 Gordon Street to Joseph Reaich and Margaret Jappy. He had a brother, William Reaich, who died aged 4 months and his father remarried to Catherine Jane Sinclair. He had half-sisters Maggie Bella of Buckie, Catherine of Grimsby, Williamina of Buckie and a half-brother John who died at a few months old. I thought that he may have moved near to Catherine Smith but I couldn't find him.

I was able to find him in the 1901 census; I haven't checked the 1911 census although I did search for deaths in Scotland and I was unable to find anything. I've also checked under the variations (Riach, Reoch, Reach etc.), and I still found nothing, so I'm going to assume that he maybe emigrated.

I haven't found anything on ancestry so I don't think he died down in England. I thought with a name like Reaich it'd be relatively easy to find records seeing as it's not such a common name, yet this person has confused me as I have found nothing on him aside from his birth.

If anyone could offer a hand with this one, it would be greatly appreciated

Greg
