The Common Room / What happened to Isabella?
« on: Thursday 26 September 24 15:58 BST (UK)  »
Isabella Machell was my 2x great aunt, the older sister of my great-grandfather, Richard Greville Machell.
She was born 29 September 1862 in Killington, Westmorland. She’s with her family in Killington in the 1871 census.
She married Richard Iveson, a Joiner, 22 January 1881, in Kendal. In the 1881 census she and Richard are living at 78 Bridge End Old Hutton, Westmorland. Richard is a Joiner and Cabinet Maker born Sedbergh, Yorkshire, 1860.
I can’t find a trace of Isabella after 1881!! I’ve searched immigration records, death registers (the only Isabella Ivesons I’ve found aren’t the right Isabella). Any help finding her would be greatly appreciated!

(In 1891 Richard Iveson is Single (not a Widower), a Joiner, born 1863 Sedbergh, and living as a Boarder in Fairburn near Pontefract. He married Sophie Burden in 1891 and was a Bachelor.)

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Dead or alive?
« on: Wednesday 04 September 24 13:25 BST (UK)  »
On the baptism records of Henry Wilkinson, 1782 and William Wilkinson, 1784, Topcliffe, their paternal grandfather, Henry Wilkinson, labourer/husbandman, of Ripen, is noted (as well as their maternal grandfather). But, on Mary Wilkinson’s baptism, 1786, Topcliffe, no paternal grandfather is noted. (Her maternal grandfather is.) Is there any significance to the omission of a paternal grandfather in 1786?

Also, when Henry Wilkinson (1782) remarried 10 Oct 1837 in Leeds, his father is listed as Thomas Wilkinson, occupation gardener. No mention of his being deceased. Is it safe to assume that his father was still alive in 1837? (He was born about 1760.)

Thanks!

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Thomas Wilkinson of Ripon—or Grindon??
« on: Sunday 01 September 24 19:01 BST (UK)  »
I originally posted this on the Durham page, but I think it might belong here?

I need some help with a Thomas Wilkinson, born about 1758. He married Mary Reynard of Ripon in 1780 in Grindon Stockton-by-Tees. Thomas was of Grindon, and was a gardener at Wynyard (near Grindon). According to their marriage bond they were both 22.

It’s very possible (even likely?) that Thomas was the illegitimate son of Ann Wilkinson of Thorpe and was baptised 1755 in Grindon.

But, in 1782 his first son, Henry, was baptised in Topcliffe by Thirsk. The baptism record has an amazing amount of information: Henry Wilkinson first son of Thomas Wilkinson of Asenby, Gardener at Newby [Hall?], Son of Henry Wilkinson of Ripon husbandman, & of Mary Daughter of Thomas Reynard of Doll [Dole] Bank Farmer. (Dole Bank Farm is in Markington, near Ripon.)

My questions: was Thomas originally from Grindon or was he from somewhere near Ripon in Yorkshire? If he was from Ripon, why was he working in Wynyard, quite a long way from home? If he was the illegitimate son of Ann Wilkinson, who is the Henry Wilkinson of Ripon husbandman mentioned in the baptism record?

Thanks!

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Wilkinson’s Pontefract Cakes
« on: Sunday 01 September 24 13:07 BST (UK)  »
I’m trying to find out some information about William Roberts Wilkinson, who started the company in 1884.

I assume WRW started the liquorice business with his inheritance from his father in 1884. He sold the liquorice business in 1894, 10 years after starting it. In 1901 he’s a retired liquorice refiner. BUT, in 1911 he’s selling vacuum cleaners door-to-door. In 1921 he’s an accounting clerk at his son-in-law’s furnishing business, Wards. He died 15 February 1927.

My question: what happened to all his money?! He was retired in 1901 but selling vacuum cleaners in 1911?

Thanks!

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Deaths in Skipton circa 2021
« on: Wednesday 24 July 24 13:42 BST (UK)  »
I’ve just learned that a very old friend of mine died in 2021–I think in Skipton. Her name was Angela Smith. She was born 6 January 1964, and married Brian France in 1989. They divorced and she might have remarried, but I lost touch with her after her first marriage. How can I find out when she died, and where she might be buried?
Thank you,
Bridget

Lancashire / Help finding a father’s name.
« on: Wednesday 03 June 20 19:29 BST (UK)  »
My grandfather, Patrick Flynn, was born 23 August 1892 in Liverpool. On his birth certificate his father is Andrew Flynn, his mother Alice Ann née Taylor. There were at least 5 other children born to Andrew and Alice Ann—Andrew 1888, Joseph 1890, Peter 1895, John 1896, and Michael 1901—all with the same mother’s maiden name on their birth certificates. I’ve found RC christening records for some of the boys.
But, I’ve been unable to find a marriage between Andrew and Alice Ann, though I’ve searched a number of sites, and even searched just using first names. I’m beginning to think the couple never married. (In the 1881 census Andrew was “married” to a woman named Sarah who was born in Scotland. I’ve been unable to find a record of this marriage also.)
Without a marriage, how can I find out Alice Ann’s father’s name? According to the censuses (1891 and 1901) she was born about 1864 in Liverpool.
Thanks!

Westmorland / Thomas Shaw & Rosamund Hudderston--Married Heversham
« on: Sunday 24 February 19 12:10 GMT (UK)  »
I think my Agnes Shaw, married William Dent 10 May 1779, in Preston Patrick was probably baptised 21 April 1751 in Preston Patrick. If so, she was the daughter of Thomas Shaw and Rosamund Hudderston, married 12 November 1747 Heversham. But, I can't find any information about Rosamund Hudderston--or even the surname Hudderston. Does anyone know anything about this surname, or possible variants?
Thanks!

The Common Room / Is this my William Wilson?
« on: Monday 29 May 17 23:20 BST (UK)  »
I'm researching William Wilson, born 1866, St Saviour, Surrey. (His naval records show that he was born 29 August 1866 St Saviour.).

BUT: I’ve found a William Wilson born 29 June 1866 St Marylebone Workhouse.  He was baptized 12 July 1866; his mother’s name was Jane; there’s no father’s name given.

Could this be my William Wilson?  If so, why is his birth 2 months off on his naval records?  And if he was born in St Marylebone, why would he give his place of birth as St Saviour?  (In 1881 he was a pauper on the Training Ship Exmouth.)
