Canada / Re: Marriage: MAGUIRE, James and HARVEY, ANN about 1850-51
« on: Monday 17 August 15 02:38 BST (UK)  »
Definitely coincidence.  I should have pointed out that James and Ann were married in Canada.  Its the exact date and place that I'm looking for.  It had to be around 1850-51, and had to be in Ontario.
So far, I have no lines at all to Scotland, and no Charlottes.

Thomas and Anne MARTIN of Down

Here's a list of children of Thomas and Anne MARTIN gleaned from an FHS microfilm of the church registers of Downpatrick Parish Church of Ireland including Saul. I am reasonably sure that they are all from the same family, but would like someone to confirm if possible.
Further information about Thomas and Anne such as residence, birthplace, Anne's maiden name would be very much appreciated.

Mary baptized 07 July, 1793 Notes: Thomas and Anne "of Ballykillbeg"

Bella     "        24 Sept, 1797 Notes: Baptized as "Bella", buried in Ontario Canada as "Isabella".

Fermanagh / Re: John Ovens of Drumbadmeen
« on: Wednesday 29 January 14 06:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hmm.  Drumbadmeen, right next door to Drumcrow West where I have a nest of Owenses.  (With a w.)  I've suspected for some time now that Owens and Ovens are versions of the same name.  There seems to be some crossover between the names in that area.  I am descended from John II born 1800, died 1844, son of John Owens I and his second wife, name unknown, maybe Eleanor.
John I and his first wife (also unknown) had Rev. Thomas (ordained by John Wesley in 1785, died 1808), Frank(?? in 1700's more likely Francis), Torrance or Terrance, William , Edward, Kitty (?), mary, Letty(?).
I'm pretty confident about Rev. Thomas, and am certain about John II and subsequent.

Cavan / Re: maguire family

Butlers Bridge is about midway between Cavan town and Belturbet on the N3.
Sorry if I'm hijacking the thread, but I'm curious about mick7546's Rebecca Maguire.  Was Maguire her maiden name?  My great great grandmother was Lucy Maguire nee Patterson, born 1806, and at the time of her marriage to Thomas Maguire in 1820 she was living in the townland of Cleggan, parish of Cleenish, Co. Fermanagh.
Bobwag:  Thomas, John and James' names appear in my family, John and James being sons of Thomas.  Thomas lived in Cleggan at the time of his marriage, but he was not from there.
What time period are you looking at?  And what religion?

I've been checking for traces in Dinnydoon, Derrydoon, and Derry "from" Rossory without much luck.  The trouble is that Thomas Maguire doesn't show up until that entry in November 1820 in Mullaghdun, Parish of Cleenish.  Records anywhere are pretty sparse before 1820, and the family left for Canada in 1847, before Griffiths'.  Seems to me the Tithe Applotment places him in Cleggan.
I still think you've put me farther ahead than I was.
Many thanks.

Armed Forces / Toronto Naval Brigade 1861-1863
« on: Wednesday 10 April 13 06:23 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for information on the Toronto Naval Brigade from its organization in December 1861 until my great grandfather's death in April 1863.  That's three years BEFORE the Fenian raids in 1866.  I already have sufficient information on the Fenian raids, thank you.
I'm trying to find out why my ggfather was accorded an elaborate military funeral.  Did he do something special for the Brigade?  Was he an officer?  Or was it because he owned a bar on King St. West?
James Maguire, born 1825, Cleggan Townland , Parish of Cleenish, County Fermanagh, Ireland.  Died April 1863, 113-115 King St West, Toronto, of apoplexy.  Interred St. James Cemetery, Toronto.
One wonders if there were photos of the various militias- there were a lot of them formed to counter the Fenian threat.
Cheers

Yup.  Definitely odd phraseology.  Who knows what the minister was thinking when he made that insert after the original entry.  I'm still open to other interpretations, but try as I might, I can't make myself see Dinny for Derry.
