Europe / White Russians in the UK
« on: Monday 23 December 13 12:32 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to research the cousins of Alexander Obolensky (Александр Сергеевич Оболенский) who might have adopted English names and chose to reside in England following 1917.

According to my wife's family legend, her grandmother's cousin was Alexander Obolensky. I have been researching the Obolensky family tree and there is a possibility that she might have been a child from the relationship between Vladimir Esaulov and Nina Obolenskaya. Has anyone researched the cousins of Alexander Obolensky?

In order to assimilate into English society my wife's grandmother was given the name Myrtle Squire. On her marriage certificate she listed her father as John Martindale Squire who was a retired member of the Indian Police. It seems that she might have been born in Russia in 1916. The family does have an extensive collection of photographs.

Any help much appreciated. Many thanks Asher

I am trying to trace the family of a Polish Army Officer with the surname Bruskewewicz who served in GHQ Liaison Regiment (Phantom). The reason for this is that I am trying to locate any documents/personal accounts/photographs concerning his experience with Phantom. If you can assist me in my research, please send me a personal message or contact me via my website.

World War Two / Re: Service Records of UK POWs in German or Italian hands

Many thanks for your reply. The reason for the post is that I have never examined the service records of someone who has been taken prisoner by the Italians or the Germans and it would be useful for the article I am writing.

The service records are still held by the MOD and am most interested what the service records 'recorded'. If you know of anyone who has service records of a POW, it would be good to discover what sort of information is contained in them.

I am also on the lookout for unpublished letters or diaries, which I could use extracts.

Best

Hello

I am currently writing an article on UK POWs in German or Italian hands during the Second World War. I am keen to get in touch with someone who has managed to obtain service records from the MOD of a former POW. I would like to examine the service records of former POW.

Looking forward to a reply to this post

Many thanks

Hello

Many thanks for getting in touch. I would very much like further information for the nominal roll of former members of the West Somerset Yeomanry. I have currently very little concerning your relative:

Tpr. J Cook (Service No. 295369)
James Cook was born in Carhampton, Somerset. He was residing in Carhampton, Somerset when he enlisted at Taunton. His original number was 1619. On 3 August 1918, in France and Flanders, Cook was killed in action.

Once I have added further information I can send you an electronic copy of the nominal roll.

With best wishes

Hello

If you believe that your ancestor/relative served in GHQ Liaison Regiment/Phantom during the Second World War, I might well be able to provide you with further information about his wartime service.

I have been researching the unit for sometime and have uncovered various details about their wartime service in this specialist unit from a variety of source.

I have published a nominal roll of all ranks GHQ Liaison Regiment which can be bought here:
http://www.lulu.com/product/paperback/ghq-liaison-regiment-a-nominal-roll-with-short-biographies/12199341

However, I am happy to do individual look ups for relatives of former members and fellow researchers.

Finally I am working on an extended history of the unit and am on the lookout for personal accounts, private diaries and letters which could help contribute to my knowledge of the unit and my research.

Looking forward to hearing from relatives, former members or anyone interested in my ongoing research.

Many thanks for taking time to read this

It might be worth getting in touch with the East Kent Mercury. The telephone is on the internet but if needed can send one of the reporter's details...

With best wishes
