I have a list of the 20 names of the Scottish team from which I'm trying to isolate any from the Aberdeen area. The team comprised the top marksmen drawn from the Scottish regiments.
I can initially do this by using FreeCen but I'm wondering if that in itself offers enough information.

Were serving soldiers recorded in the same way as the civilian population or was there a separate Army list which would, I believe, be based on the current location of the regiment?

The Gordon Highlanders recruited mainly in the Aberdeen area. Should I be looking for some sort of regimental record?

Doesn't look like that's the one I'm looking for then.
With what I presume is a fairly rare surname, I'd have thought it might be fairly easy.
My D Gotobed was obviously well trained up in the industry of gun making and must have been highly skilled.
Unless ............
It is possible he was a retailer and as often happened a Gunmaker would put the retailer's name on a piece. Retailers were usually hardware / ironmonger type outlets.

How could I check the business activity of D Gotobed & Co. 330 Lodge Road, Birmingham (1870-90 perhaps).

Looking for any info on this person.
It appears he was a Gunmaker in Birmingham circa 1880.
Borne in Stratford, household record for 1861 & 1891 but nothing in-between.
There is a trading address of D Gotobed & Co. 330 Lodge Road, Birmingham but unsure what date it would be. Also found 1 reference to 350 Lodge Road.

Yes he was born in 1918.
I was hoping there may already be some information here.
I'm doing this as a favour for a friend and he's looking just for the 1860's Services connection.
I had a quick look at FreeBMD then realised it doesn't cover Scotland.

General question to anyone who knows the answer.:

I need to forward the documents.
I can't see a way of sending a "private message" here. Is it possible?

Do not include an email address in a reply or those wretched "web crawlers" will find it and start sending junk emails to you.

If necessary I can provide my website address and you can email from there as it's a secure site.

Always sad to see medals split up. Worth asking if she still has it. Even if the ribbon were missing you can buy replacements. A complete medal group such as your father's has a considerable value. Not that that's a consideration, but certainly worth checking.
If you don't have the WWII medals these can still be replaced by the appropriate office (Medal records office?). I did this for my ex wife's father's medal. Or, as WWII medals were unnamed you could find second hand ones on Ebay etc. Mind you I'd prefer mint condition ones that hadn't belonged to someone else.
