Hello  'amondg'

thank you very much for that information about Harriot Homan - very very much appreciated - I can believe it's her married to John Ganney - and if so, very sad she died so soon after.

I know I did concentrate on the census a bit much in my search for her [I've created a census spreadsheet for all our Homan's - three researchers - three family lines] and overlooked searching the civil records in ?haste.  I'll be able to let Harriot's family?niece know.

regards Karrienz.

Thanks for your help with this KGarrad - unsure why she would be a Herbert but a possibility if she had gone to live with her sister - Mary Herbert and her family in 1881 was living in Brentdord, Mddx

What I do have as possibles for the 1881 census:
822/123/19 Reg Dist Croyden
Annie Martin 20/1861 bn Woodford, Essex

and

624/91/17 Reg Dist Lambeth
Annie Hammond 20/1861 bn Rumford, Essex

update 29-Sep: been to the library to view the originals of both the above and both surnames clearly written, thus transcribed correctly.

;D yes thanks for that - I have the Herbert marriage of Mary Homan and also her sister Kate to Thatcher and have looked at the census' of both of them to see if Harriot is anywhere near.

it's a bit of a mission finding this family as a whole due to the name; I can't locate John and Ellen and baby Mary at all in the 1851 census so I moved on to the individuals - the 1861:

Reg Dist: Romford, Essex Civil Parish Rainham 1072/104/8 - this family's children are 1st cousins to my ancester's family -

Hello - hoping I'm posting in the correct place.  I would like some assistance please in locating some further information or some advice as to where best to look online for Harriot - I have searched for marriage/death registration with all sorts of forename/surname variants and the census' on from 1871 too but have had no luck.

Harriot Ann Homan - reg: Sep 1/4 1861 Romford, Essex

daughter of John Homan and Ellen

In the 1871 census for REG DIST: Richmond, Civil Parish Mortlake   870/80/29 is recorded as:

Hariot N Holman age 9 birthplace:  Rainham Essex

I did think she may have used her middle name Ann when she was older or possibly Hannah but have still not located her.  Any help appreciated.

Thanks

New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: Sacred Heart Convent Island Bay Wellington

 ;D Hi TwiggyTree

Thank you very much for that information and the links; I had seen the photographs but not the rest of the file references.  Now, today as I was composing a note to the NatLib to see about finding the name of my grandmother in the registers - a 'light bulb' went off - I have her Roman Catholic Missal - I've had it for about 40 years and it's so precious that I had it packed away with some other mementos in a storage box in my wardrobe; I have just gotten the box down and found the Missal - guess what is on the front  page in pencil: St Mary's Convent, Hill Street, Thorndon.  However this book is printed in 1936 - the same year my grandmother got married so it may have been a gift from her old 'mother superior' at this convent or she was attending the chapel - having been at the St Mary's convent school as a child - I had always thought though that it was the Island Bay convent because she was fostered to a family in Island Bay as a young girl around 12 or younger as her mother remarried in 1924 and my grandmother never lived with her again.  I'll let you know how I get on...I have some more checking on the residence of her mother when she first married in 1918 - it is probably Thorndon as I know that was an area in Wellington North.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Sacred Heart Convent Island Bay Wellington
« on: Monday 17 February 14 00:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

My grandmother more than likely (most probably) went to Sacred Heart Convent Island Bay from a young age circa 1918 - 1925 at least.

Enquiring today if anyone can help me locate the whereabouts of the records of the old Convent. On Archives NZ Archway index for the convent primary school there is a 'no date' box of primary school records but I was wondering if NZSG have any indexes for Catholic schools in Wellington for those years or should I be contacting the Catholic Schools archives people - tried looking up who that would be but drawn a blank - the residence of my great grandmother Lily Belcher on the Electoral roll for 1919 is Wellington North which appears to be quite a distance from Island Bay and the school.

Any help or ideas appreciated thank you

New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: Agnes McArthur - Invercargill 1860's
« on: Monday 10 February 14 10:32 GMT (UK)  »
:) Thanks Spades - much appreciated.  I really am a goose as I thought the residence part meant length of time being in NZ! I will broaden my search more...although I haven't restricted the search to just 1863 for Agnes.  Richard Richmond may have come further down south from the Otago goldfields there's a few mentions of the names on paperspast.  I suspect he may have come over from Victoria in 1858 or 59.

The paperspast references to William Richard Richmond are for their son...unfortunate chappy.  I have searched famsearch.org shipping...I have had some research done on my behalf at Southland museum but no results.  I hadn't been looking at this family for awhile and just gotten back to it recently. Also lately was contacted by a 'cousin' in the family and she and I have been swapping titbits about  Agnes and Richard's children...which is nice to finally have a research buddy to 'brainstorm' with.

Dear Spades

I know this topic has been completed, and for some time now, but I'm wondering if you can advise me.  I am currently looking at another marriage for a member of the same family and when I was on the Archives NZ site researching about "Intention to Marry Notices" and where to locate them, the information states:

 - place of residence at time of notice and length of residence in registration district -

http://archives.govt.nz/research/guides/personal-identity

as one of the bullet points.  What I am wondering is, for the Intention to Marry Notice details you gave me for Agnes and Richard Richmond in 1873 where her residence is 10 months and his is 2 years, should I be looking at just the time they were in Invercargill or the length of time they were in NZ?  If it's the former (district only) then I will broaden my search for Agnes arrival in NZ from Mar 1/4 1863 which is what I've been concentrating on.  Any comments much appreciated.

Karrienz

The Lighter Side / Re: Our Ancestors Lives all Done in a Flash!

Thank you for that Winterbloom (apologies for posting the wrong name earlier) - I agree that when you get back to the late 18th century things get a bit hazy - however as you say it is more interesting to concentrate on what you have and go with that.  I'm currently researching another family where the father was a miller all his life and found it is so interesting learning about mills and milling etc and also finding snippets of info on how the family lived and where they moved to.    And that is so amazing that the young Poet Dowson is buried near where your own family lived.  My miller baptised 5 of his 7 children at a wee church in Brentford, Mddx - only 2 were born there in Brentford - I couldn't understand why only 2 were bp in Bucks - when 5 were born there - and do you know I lived in Brentford for 12 years and walked past that church practically everyday and it was only after I got back to NZ 16 years ago and started looking at this family's history that I discovered about the Brentford connection - I tell you it felt a bit uncanny! ;D

Cheers
Karrienz
